Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater

It’s every parents worst nightmare isn’t it? Our teens get to the stage of wanting to go away on holiday with a group of friends, and most of the time of course everything is fine and they have a great time.

This lad’s parents though must be suffering agonies. I do hope he’s soon found safe and well.

Well, the two men must be know something of events that night.

No doubt when investigations are complete, we'll find out why the search has been called off.

The police on Tenerife have said that the two men are not relevant to the investigation according to the BBC News item.

Doesn't mean to say they are not, of course.

Apologies - that should read "Jack O'Sullivan" not "Slater".

I think when there are mysterious elements, these invite speculation.

With Nicola Bulley, there was her phone on the bench still linked in to a call, and her dog on the river bank.... later, of course, more info was released about her mental health.

With Jay Slater, there's the fact he went off with 2 strangers an hour's drive into the mountains causing the public to wonder for what reason ... later, his murky past was revealed.

With Jack Slater, the person missing in Bristol, he's a clean cut young man with seemingly no mysterious elements or intrigue surrounding him to catch the public's imagination. Personally I suspect he fell into the River Avon as he was quite close to it and sadly every year there's the loss of at least one young person in either Bristol or Bath for this reason after a night out.

Many have gone missing in Tenerife, many never found.
The odd thing is that, like Nicola Bulley, social media went wild with speculation, misinformation and condemnation. Why do some cases go viral and others (like the boy missing in Bristol) hardly make the local press?
There was a young lad near me who went missing a few years ago, massive searches, for months, then they gave up- found dead two years later in a derelict building close to his home, which apparently had been searched.

Looking at the terrain it would be very easy to overlook a body.
There aren’t all that many doing the searching and I think even that may be scaled down very soon.
A similar case, a woman who was an experienced hiker and went missing I think in France, was only found by accident years later. It was a sad case and her boyfriend would have had suspicions cast on him if he hadn’t been in another country at the time.

I agree GSM there is something odd about this whole thing.

It’s interesting that GoFundMe are taking their time releasing money. Over £43k has been donated. There is something amiss here imho.

Several interesting things in the wording of statements from police.

They say the phone can't be tracked when "switched off", is this just a translation issue or are they suggesting the phone was manually switched off as opposed to running out of battery?

Also, "if Jay disappeared in the way we were told", seems to suggests the police have doubts about Lucy's account?

Do you believe the police on Tenerife got it wrong? The yiung man’s friend on Tenerife says he phoned her after leaving the accommodation rented by these two British tourists

Greenfinch Sun 30-Jun-24 11:45:31

Yes I heard that too. Apparently they were interviewed by the Spanish police and then allowed to return to the UK as having no relevance to the case. Difficult to believe.

Iam64 Sun 30-Jun-24 11:43:38

Yes maddy, they were questioned before they left Tenerife.

This search has demanded huge resources and isn’t making progress. How long and at what cost can it be expected to continue

I’d like to know what the two men know about this. Have they been identified and questioned?

On my phone too, that the search is being called off. How very strange. And sudden. Is there something they are not telling us?

mae13 Sun 30-Jun-24 11:31:44

Unfortunately, for his family, as the details of his very unsavoury criminal background surfaced in the media then the initial upsurge of public sympathy rapidly evaporated. The report of he and his cronies behaviour at Preston Crown Court wouldn't endear him to the Devil.

pably15 Sun 30-Jun-24 11:16:45

Just read that on the news Sparklefizz, it's a very strange case..

Sparklefizz Sun 30-Jun-24 11:07:35

I have just seen on Sky News on my phone that the search is being called off because they have found no trace of him anywhere.

His mother is now in negotiation to draw down some of the monies, £36,000, in the gofundme account. ‘To support the rescue teams, pay for her and those with her day to day expenses and fly other family members out to Tenerife’

Nannashirlz Thu 27-Jun-24 13:07:08

What his parents must be going through, when it first came out about him it seemed so poor lad why would you get into a strange car with 2 unknown men in a foreign country never mind this one. Now it’s come out about what he’s done in past and into its starting to look a bit jiffy. Hopefully he will get found safely but after this long it’s not looking good

Jaxjacky Thu 27-Jun-24 09:00:30

The search must be costing a fortune in resources, probably to the detriment of their normal duties, I feel sorry for the people conducting it. There is so much media focus, how long do they keep looking?

Oreo Thu 27-Jun-24 08:46:50

There was a bus at 8 a.m and another at 10 a.m which suggests buses run every two hours. Not every 10 minutes.

Callistemon213 Thu 27-Jun-24 08:42:08

Maybe , he left in a hurry in the morning, though it wasn’t that early as buses were running every 10 minutes, why didn’t he wait for a bus ?

I find it difficult to believe that buses ran every 10minutes in such a remote area.

Yes, perhaps his drink was spiked (speculation, sorry) as it was reported he was staggering around in the nightclub. Where were his friends when this happened?

Callistemon213 Thu 27-Jun-24 08:39:37

☹ the omens are not good after all this time.

Dickens

Trying to resist the urge to be an armchair detective - mostly successfully. But, and this is just a personal observation and is not based on any known facts in this case - I find it rather odd that a young teen of 19 would separate himself from his peers and go off with two much older men.

I believe the younger of the two men was in his 30s - which is not old - but when I was 19, it seemed very old to me. And the other was about 40?

Not the kind of companions teenagers usually seek out.

I think that what is important is to know why he decided to back to their pad.

I could understand if he'd met up with another group of lads his own age and was going back to their B&B to "party"- that's what teens often do.

But to get in a car with two older men he'd only just met? What were they offering that was attractive to him?

Anyway, I shall not speculate further. Because things are not always what they seem to be and there is wild speculation already all over social media.

I totally agree
