Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater

It’s every parents worst nightmare isn’t it? Our teens get to the stage of wanting to go away on holiday with a group of friends, and most of the time of course everything is fine and they have a great time.

This lad’s parents though must be suffering agonies. I do hope he’s soon found safe and well.

Many have gone missing in Tenerife, many never found.
The odd thing is that, like Nicola Bulley, social media went wild with speculation, misinformation and condemnation. Why do some cases go viral and others (like the boy missing in Bristol) hardly make the local press?
There was a young lad near me who went missing a few years ago, massive searches, for months, then they gave up- found dead two years later in a derelict building close to his home, which apparently had been searched.

I think when there are mysterious elements, these invite speculation.

With Nicola Bulley, there was her phone on the bench still linked in to a call, and her dog on the river bank.... later, of course, more info was released about her mental health.

With Jay Slater, there's the fact he went off with 2 strangers an hour's drive into the mountains causing the public to wonder for what reason ... later, his murky past was revealed.

With Jack Slater, the person missing in Bristol, he's a clean cut young man with seemingly no mysterious elements or intrigue surrounding him to catch the public's imagination. Personally I suspect he fell into the River Avon as he was quite close to it and sadly every year there's the loss of at least one young person in either Bristol or Bath for this reason after a night out.

Apologies - that should read "Jack O'Sullivan" not "Slater".

Well, the two men must be know something of events that night.

No doubt when investigations are complete, we'll find out why the search has been called off.

The police on Tenerife have said that the two men are not relevant to the investigation according to the BBC News item.

Doesn't mean to say they are not, of course.

One simply cannot imagine what his family and friends must be going through, never knowing what happened sad.

Casdon Sun 30-Jun-24 15:37:54

The police clearly know something they are not yet revealing about this case.

From Sky News:

The Civil Guard called for volunteers to join a new search in the Masca area - near his last-known location - on Saturday.

It has now confirmed to Sky News that the search has ended. Police are keeping the investigation open and could yet open up searches in the south of the island, but have not provided an update.

As La Masca is not in the south of the island I read that that means they now don’t think he disappeared there, but possibly later, in the south?

The police are probably receiving reports of sightings from all over the place. But I don't think they know anything except where his phone pinged last and perhaps if the video call(s?) can be recovered somehow then something could be gleaned, ideally the exact trail he was on...

Everything else is speculation or people trying to be "helpful"

I agree.

I don't think the police are actually hiding information - they just don't have anything more to go on and having looked in the obvious places, don't have a clue where to search further.

I cannot imagine what his family are going through.

A picture of one of the two men he was with last has been published in the DM. I’m unsure what I think about this. I do feel that these two men should be interviewed by British police, but publishing a picture is not the right thing to do. It’s strange that it’s been said that these two men only went to Tenerife for two or three nights, if that’s true as reported. Why would anyone go for such a short time? It’s all very strange.

Iam64 Wed 03-Jul-24 11:56:09

3 night stays on Tenerife not uncommon. The suggestion is these two were there for the music festival……..
Spanish police interviewed them and concluded they were ok to fly home, they did stay an extra day when asked to do so.
Jay was seen walking up the hill, in the opposite direction to the place he was said to be going. I agree there’s an underlying unknown here but 3 days ‘partying’ could leave this 19 year old making poor choices and decisions

maddyone Wed 03-Jul-24 12:00:08

Yes, that’s all true Iam. Personally I wouldn’t go to Tenerife for three days only, but it could be true that they were there for the festival. I don’t think the man’s photo should have been published, whatever the truth of it all but I think it might be helpful for the British police to interview them.

I suspect the boy is in a spot already searched. Remember how Nicola B. was found in rushes near where she fell in!
searchers said they had not been told to search rushes - Pathetic. Often people are found in areas already searched but not very thoroughly.

Iam64 Wed 03-Jul-24 12:14:31

Pathetic is a very negative word to use in circs like this

comrade Thu 04-Jul-24 00:14:47

So the man Jay stayed with also turns out to be a convicted criminal? And he booked the Airbnb using a made up last name.

This story keeps getting more and more worrying...

BlueBelle Thu 04-Jul-24 05:44:34

One word comes to my mind behind all this and that’s DRUGS

A long time ago a middle aged lady working in an office for a friend near me went missing ….after the initial hoo har it went quiet she’s was never found and to this day no one has ever known what happened to her There are many situations many mysteries like this with no real conclusions

It's being reported that he did steal the £12,000 Rolex previously mentioned in reports because he sent photos and messages about it to his mates, so there could be several criminal elements to what happened ......

maddyone Thu 04-Jul-24 08:59:21

My gut feeling is that something has happened to him that was not accidental.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 04-Jul-24 10:18:23

Quite possibly. Featuring drugs I suspect.

Although no such watch, to our knowledge, has been reported stolen which may rather hinder the investigation.

I find the language used in the media disingenuous to say the least. Jay has been described by his father as a “young boy” possibly abducted/targeted / whatever by two “grown men”.

Jay is 19 - hardly a child victim, at 19 he is old enough to serve his country, get married, vote, and very little younger than some of our England football team - and from what I read, perfectly able to take care of himself even if he has made some wrong decisions in the past.

His mum also was quoted as saying "I want my baby home".

Iam64 Thu 04-Jul-24 15:02:32

I want my baby home
Says so much in the known circumstances doesn’t it

BigMamma Thu 04-Jul-24 15:06:40

Todays news states he stole a £1000 Rolex watch and ran away so goodness knows what happened to him after that.

Sorry £12,000. watch

maddyone Thu 04-Jul-24 15:11:10

I suspect he’s not a very nice young man, but I hope he’s found alive.
I suspect that he won’t be though.
