Oh thank you for all the lovely comments and some of your memories and some of your plans. Also thank you for the lovely compliments. It’s funny that you say I’m not how you imagined me Marydoll, because I also have mental pictures of you all in my head. Probably none of my images would be at all like the real people.
Some of your posts made me feel quite sad, but also so lucky. Some of you lost your husbands and so were unable to celebrate your Golden Weddings, and I felt very sad reading those posts, as I know it is no more than luck that allows us to reach this point. We are very lucky to be here, that’s for certain.
The branch of the The Ivy we are going to is in Chichester. There won’t be so many of us, just a group of ten family members, and we will miss our parents, and our daughter and her three children who are in New Zealand, and who we celebrated with earlier in the year. She is unable to leave NZ, well the children are unable to leave, to be with us on the actual anniversary, which is why we celebrated in NZ with them, but they will very much be in our thoughts.
grannyjan no need to bake cakes if you don’t want to. I just happen to enjoy baking and have made several cakes for special occasions in the family. I’m not a master baker by any means, but I just do my best. Grandmadinosaur maybe you will decide to make a cake, it doesn’t have to be anything spectacular, it can just be quite ordinary, but it’s always nice to have cake and bubbles when you’re celebrating. And there’s always the option to buy one. My son and his partner made our Ruby Wedding cake, and I made our Silver Wedding cake. My mother made our wedding cake but we got it iced by a local lady who did cake making and icing professionally.
It’s just lovely reading all about all your anniversary celebrations. It’s always worth celebrating in my opinion.

(72 Posts)I’ve just made our Golden Wedding cake and put it in the oven. It’s a rich fruit cake, aka Christmas cake, because my husband loves rich fruit cake. I’m toying with the idea of also making a Madeira cake the week before, because some of the younger members of the family prefer sponge cake. The fruit cake is really for my husband. The date is 10/08/24 so the cake will have plenty of time to mature and be fed with a lot bit of brandy.
I can hardly believe it. Fifty years and three children and four grandchildren later, and despite some ups and downs, we’re still together. I’ve booked The Ivy for lunch on the day and then we’ll come back here for cake and champagne.
We celebrated early in January too, with our daughter and three grandchildren, whilst we were out in New Zealand, visiting them. We went to a nice, old fashioned hotel for a lovely afternoon tea, and we had a cake and a bottle of NZ sparkling wine (which was very nice) and a bottle of fizzy grape juice for the children.
My only regret is that my parents are no longer alive and will be missed on the day, and my parents in law too. We’ve lost three of them in the last couple of years and I lost my dad some eight years ago now. They were always at every family celebration and occasion for so many years, marriages, Christenings, Christmas, graduation ceremonies, our significant wedding anniversaries, the last being our Ruby, when they were all there. They will be missed but not forgotten.
At the end of August, we’re going on a Golden Wedding trip to the Galapagos, which I’m really looking forward to. A week cruising the different islands, with all excursions included. Guided walks with experts, swimming, snorkelling which I shall definitely avoid
which I must try as I’ve never tried before, small boat rides to see the wildlife up close. It all sounds exciting and I’m looking forward to it.
How have you celebrated any of your special anniversaries?
Congratulations Maddy on your forthcoming Golden Wedding Anniversary.
That’s a lovely photo’ of you and Mr M.
🥂
I love the happy photo. A great celebration to look forward to 🥳 !!
Congratulations Maddy, have a lovely second celebration. Hopefully one day soon your NZers will be able to come home and then it’ll be an amazing third celebration.
We missed out on celebrating our golden wedding anniversary with family thanks to covid but will be having a cruise on the Dee next week for our 54th with three of our four sons, daughters-in-law and five of our eight grandchildren.
Gentle hugs for those who didn’t get to 50 years. I am grateful for my luck in life.

I really envy you this! Galapagos is one place on my bucket list Ive never been to. I have a mania about tortoises, turtles and large reptiles and would love to see the wildlife. However I dont think my mobility would be up to a solo trip.
Congratulations Maddyone and your DH!
Have a wonderful time and relish every moment.
It's quite an achievement isn't it.
We managed 51 anniversaries.
My in-laws actually celebrated 75 years and outlived DH.
For our golden we decided to go to Cornwall where we had spent our honeymoon.
We went by train from Edinburgh and I booked a restaurant on-line near our cosy Landmark Trust flat in Penzance- still open late. There was a table laid for us with a bottle of bubbly and vase of daffodils.
The waiter even carried our cases up the stairs to the top floor with views of St Michael's Mount.
DH was already having cancer treatment so we took things gently.
I recommend top of the bus touring as you can see over the high hedges
Later we moved to a hotel in St Austell where we visited the Lost gardens of Heligon and the Eden project, both a delight.
Such happy memories.
On the way home we broke our journey at Derby and stayed with DS3.
Congratulations! Our son went to South America and then on to the Galapagos before Christmas - he had a wonderful holiday, so I hope yours is as good. He certainly had some interesting experiences in the food! Guinea pigs and alpaca being on the menu, amongst other interesting stuff.
We celebrated our golden wedding 6 years ago😮. Had a family do at South Lodge -. and we spent the actual day on the Bernini Express travelling from Italy up to St Moritz, which I loved.
Congratulations to you both, Maddyone! Have a wonderful time. My DH would have loved your cake! On our 50th DH and I had a few days in a lovely hotel in Norfolk and then, once the school holidays had started, we had booked a house in Pembrokeshire for a big family party. We had dinner at a very good local restaurant and then champagne and cake which we took down to the beach and watched the sun go down. In nine days time, it would have been our 58th. Sad that he didn’t make it to 60, but incredibly grateful for all the years we had.
Middle of Covid lockdown so a take away to celebrate our golden wedding
Congratulations to you both on your upcoming Golden Wedding! We just celebrated our 40th while we were on holiday in Corfu for our daughter's wedding (which was three days before our anniversary).
Chloe1984 I hope you enjoyed it just the same. At least it will have been peaceful and quiet.
My mum was widowed young and said other people's wedding anniversaries reminded her of her loss so we never made a big fuss and reserved parties for birthdays.
Congratulations maddyone, not long to go now until you celebrate with your family. That cake looks scrummy, I'm like your husband in that a heavy, rich fruit cake is the best.
We were married in December and last year went to Vienna for our 40th anniversary. We did all the usual visits and Christmas markets, but I also made my husband linger for several long minutes in front of Klimt's The Kiss in recognition of the occasion! (He's used to my crazy ideas!) What's nice is that we bought a framed copy of the artwork to hang in our dining room.
Here's the photo I took of the real one.
We were booked to stay in Vaison la Romaine for our silver wedding in 1992. We had to change the venue as the hotel was destroyed in the flood and the whole area was inaccessible.
Our golden anniversary was a family lunch at a lovely restaurant and then back to ours for cake and champagne. I had just recovered from my cancer treatment and DH was just starting his.
Most of our non significant anniversaries were wonderful holidays in lovely locations.
I find when photos are posted, no- one looks like I imagined!!
Congratulations Maddy to you and your DH.
For our 50th we took 14 family (very small) and very close friends for dinner at a local restaurant and then the next day we had a buffet lunch at home for all the above and other friends, grandchildren and a few neighbours.
It was all lovely.
Then two weeks later we took our D, SiL and 3 GC to Nerja for two delightful weeks.
When our 60th came along my H had Alzheimer’s and knew nothing about it.
We received a card from the Queen and my GD and I shared a special bottle of Champagne gifted to us and we had a nice meal just the three of us, it was very poignant.
He died 8 months later.
Sincerest best wishes to all celebrating whether it be a few years or many, it is all special.
Many congratulations to you both. Your plans sound very exciting. It’s ours in three years. You’re not how I imagined either. You had dark hair 🤣 Have a lovely time.
Lovely sentiment Annsixty. Whether just a few years or many, it is all special.
A Madeira cake is not a sponge cake, a true Sponge cake does not contain fat.
It's our 65th anniversary this week, away for a few days to celebrate. No family get together- too much like hard work! Lovely to enjoy our Good Fortune.

Aren't you a little ray of sunshine.
To Maddy and all of us oldies who have stuck together come what may, Cheers !!
Isn’t it funny how only properly old people celebrated Golden Wedding anniversaries when we were young (often with their picture in the local paper). Yet here we are, and not old at all!
We lost Dad less than a year before their 70th. Mum and I didn’t feel like we could let the day go unnoticed, so she and I went out for a slap up lunch and raised a glass to Dad. We had had great parties for their Golden and Diamond anniversaries though, so plenty of great times to look back on.
Congratulations. Enjoy your celebrations. Mr eff & I won't make 50 years as it's second time around for us, but tomorrow we're going to the pub where he took me on our first date 20 years ago. Have an amazing holiday
Our 50th was during lockdown so no celebrations.
