Golden Wedding Looming
(72 Posts)I’ve just made our Golden Wedding cake and put it in the oven. It’s a rich fruit cake, aka Christmas cake, because my husband loves rich fruit cake. I’m toying with the idea of also making a Madeira cake the week before, because some of the younger members of the family prefer sponge cake. The fruit cake is really for my husband. The date is 10/08/24 so the cake will have plenty of time to mature and be fed with a lot bit of brandy.
I can hardly believe it. Fifty years and three children and four grandchildren later, and despite some ups and downs, we’re still together. I’ve booked The Ivy for lunch on the day and then we’ll come back here for cake and champagne.
We celebrated early in January too, with our daughter and three grandchildren, whilst we were out in New Zealand, visiting them. We went to a nice, old fashioned hotel for a lovely afternoon tea, and we had a cake and a bottle of NZ sparkling wine (which was very nice) and a bottle of fizzy grape juice for the children.
My only regret is that my parents are no longer alive and will be missed on the day, and my parents in law too. We’ve lost three of them in the last couple of years and I lost my dad some eight years ago now. They were always at every family celebration and occasion for so many years, marriages, Christenings, Christmas, graduation ceremonies, our significant wedding anniversaries, the last being our Ruby, when they were all there. They will be missed but not forgotten.
At the end of August, we’re going on a Golden Wedding trip to the Galapagos, which I’m really looking forward to. A week cruising the different islands, with all excursions included. Guided walks with experts, swimming, snorkelling which I shall definitely avoid
which I must try as I’ve never tried before, small boat rides to see the wildlife up close. It all sounds exciting and I’m looking forward to it.
How have you celebrated any of your special anniversaries?

Congratulations maddyone
Like GSM I doubt if we will see our Golden Wedding, we had children, house and business first getting married was a bit of an afterthought
We are not far of 50 years together though.
We also knew each other for a few years before we married, but it will be our official Golden weddding next year, fingers crossed.
I can't believe we're old enough to have been married that long!
How amazing to have reached 60 years annesixty!

A Madeira cake is not a sponge cake, a true Sponge cake does not contain fat.
Aren't you a little ray of sunshine.
🤣
Thank you.
I have several friends who have also reached 60.
One is this Thursday and is also the 85th birthday of the “groom”.
Not at all. My husband was having affairs before we were married 8 years.
Congratulations and have a great time. My late husband also liked fruit cakes.
It would have been our golden wedding five years ago but we were relatively young when we married. I have now been a widow for 10 years but do have a sibling living about 20 mins away.
Last week we did have a great cousins’ reunion in Devon as my father had three siblings.
We celebrated our Golden Wedding four years ago. We had a really lovely time we spent the weekend away with family and friends in a beautiful hotel. Our son was flying in from Tokyo to celebrate with us but developed a really bad cough and as he was aware of Covid which was looming he didn’t fly from Tokyo as he was concerned that he might not have been allowed to re-enter Japan. I recall him saying football will stop everything will close down etc etc. I didn’t believe him but he was right. We didn’t see him or his family for over three years. The Olympics that took place in Tokyo had cardboard cut outs of people instead of real audience. I hope you have a wonderful time and wish you and your husband all the very best
Congratulations! Your holiday sounds fantastic, snorkelling or not! For our 50th we had a few days in the hotel where we spent our honeymoon. The staff even pulled the register out of the hotel archives to show us our registration. You may miss a few folk at your celebration, but you are lucky to be together for 50 years, many don't achieve that.
That sounds lovely! We had our Golden Wedding eighteen months ago, as we were mad enough to get married just before Christmas (in 1972). We had a lunch in a nice restaurant, which should have been for fifty people but there was a train strike, snow, some cases of Covid etc. Still had a great day.
We have just celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary - champagne and cake in the garden with our family on a warm sunny evening at the end of May……it was perfect.
We had an earlier celebration a week before when we took a trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia to watch and celebrate our eldest granddaughter’s graduation from university. That too was so special - and whilst there we found a local
Jeweller who handcrafted us silver ‘pinkie’ rings that we both wear all the time - a simple but constant reminder of how lucky we are to still be enjoying life together after 60 years of marriage.
Our Golden Wedding is August 3. We are having a family weekend in London with a private pod on the London Eye and a Thames river dinner cruise. I can’t believe it’s been 50 years - 3 sons and 5 grandchildren to show for it! Congratulations to all those celebrating a significant anniversary and well done! 👰♀️🤵
What a lovely photograph Dcba and how fit and well you both look.
Congratulations.

A Madeira cake is not a sponge cake, a true Sponge cake does not contain fat.
A Madeira cake is a traditional sponge cake made with butter.
As is a Victoria sponge cake.
A cake without fat is known as a fatless sponge.
Our Golden Wedding Anniversary was a few years ago now and we had lunch with friends and family at a hidden little gem of a hotel/restaurant in Devon, some of us staying the night. Not all the family could be there as some are overseas.
Later in the year we had a wonderful trip to Tasmania.
I remember making two square rich fruit cakes for my parents' Golden Wedding party which someone else iced beautifully (thankfully).
Congratulations maddyone and Mr M.
I hope you'll all be reunited soon.
Congratulations Maddyone, and others that have special anniversaries!
We tend to have quiet celebrations, just us, and if we are lucky enough to make it to 50 years we will most likely do the same! 41 years for us in a few weeks time. Our 25th was spent at a rotating restaurant in Las Vegas with a fantastic view. It has been tremendously hot, and I had slipped off one shoe under the table while eating. My feet had swollen in the heat and I couldn't get my shoe back on! Luckily there was a tourist shop in the lobby and I bought a cheap pair of flip-flops for the rest of the evening. Fond memories.
Been married 57 years. On our 50th Anniversary we did the Golden triangle in India. On the day we visited the Taj Mahal. Never had a honeymoon as we married by special license. This made up for it!!!
Congratulations Maddyone. Hope you have a wonderful day. 48 years for us next March. For our 40th we took son, dil and grandson to Legoland Windsor for 2 nights in themed rooms. They are our only family due to circumstances so we wanted to go somewhere suitable for a 5 year old as he was at the time. It was certainly an anniversary to remember.

I know somebody who could be described as a fatless sponge.
Some lovely posts on here from happy couples who have managed long relationships 😃
Also good to see names from posters who maybe don’t comment on other threads.
Maddyone have a lovely celebration.

Answer, we celebrate alone, not with others, same after 60 years.
We have our 55 th anniversary coming up soon, if I don’t arrange to do something ,nothing happens. I organised a party in the garden for about 30 friends and our two dds.for our 50 th. I also booked a hotel stay, It was all hard work, especially the party, and stressful so won’t repeat.
Congratulations your plans sound great. Have a good time.
