Avon skin so soft spray on oil, I was told the military use it. But evidence is ‘anecdotal’. I always use it when cycling by the canal, haven’t had any bites in years.

UNDER my wedding ring, really!
(68 Posts)Yesterday a mosquito or mosquitoes happily munched away on me. I’ve got 11 bites and I’m ultra sensitive so they grow to at least an inch across.
What has astounded me that they bit me under my wedding, engagement and eternity rings. They bit my leg through trousers and socks and top of foot through socks and trainers.
I live near a reservoir which was a stupid move five years ago and I can’t move now so I guess I’m on the menu forever. I think they breed extra long mouths here.
Oh well bring on winter.
I get eaten alive too. But have discovered two little electronic devices that prevent being bitten. One is solar powered the other is usb charged. Both under £5 on Amazon or Temu.
Avon's Skin So Soft dry oil is a perfect protection. Just spray yourself on exposed areas and you will be safe. Mosquitoes hate it!
Avon Skin so Soft original, dry oil spray. Stops them biting. Moisturises your skin as well & smells lovely.
I used to go to Greece for holidays and every time I got bitten to death! bites were big lumps as big as eggs, which wept horribly. I learnt to take Piriton for a few days before every trip, so it was in my bloodstream (A-) and then I was fine, I think once you are bitten and have the reaction its too late, the stuff needs to be in your bloodstream first. This was when I was in my 30's for some reason they no longer find me attractive in my 70's!
Deet is very effective.
I got a tick bite when gardening a week ago. Didn't feel anything but later saw small red dot on my leg. 24 hrs later leg was swollen, hard, hot and painful to put weight on it. Ended up with antibiotics which worked on the leg but made me feel yuk!. Apparently have to wait up to 2 months for 'bullseye' on leg which will show if tick was infected.
More praise here for Avon Skin so Soft (blue)

I always take it with me to Scotland during the mozzie season and it works (for me)
Have you tried Avon Dry Oil Spray. The green one. It really does keep midges and bite things away.
I read this week that Ripwort Plantain leaves aid healing for stings. Look up a picture they are quite common.
I get big pink lumps if I'm bitten too, we once went to a September wedding in Scotland and spent a night on a beach in a tent. My poor husband was woken up and told to smoke to drive the little blighters away. The next day my face was so swollen and itchy that I was almost unrecognisable, but a local pharmacist gave me something to apply that worked brilliantly.
I like to sleep under just a sheet with the windows open so, unsurprisingly, get bitten on my shoulders. If bites get to frequent I take antihistamine tablets, but my reaction seems to be reducing slightly as I get older.
Bites from those horrible big flies are another matter, I have had arms to swollen that they almost wouldn't move.
Try Avon skin so soft seems to work for my DD and they love her
I find if I eat marmite that I don’t get bitten! And they usually love me!!
I suffer from bites too. We used to live near marshes and I even got bitten through a canvas chair!
I feel for you all. I’m lucky in that I only get bitten occasionally, but my mother was regularly bitten and the bites really swelled up. Afterbite does work, or a little hydrocortisone cream.
I am a walking mozzie magnet, like many of you.
I now have anti-mosquito netting on windows and patio doors but the little bu**ers still manage to enter the house, I guess via the front door.
I take a multi-discplinary approach and immediate action when bitten else I won't be able to sleep for five or six days and have enormous oh-so-itchy lumps that last for weeks that actually leave scars.
Firstly, take an anti-histamine tablet; Certirizine works best for me.
I then apply a 'clicker' (available in chemists shops and no doubt, on-line too) on top of the bite. I think....it does some good.
Thirdly is witch hazel. Any chemist will sell it and I use the liquid form and apply all around and over the bite. Very cooling.
When that has dried I apply some anti-histamine cream.
I repeat as necessary for the next week or so but often many times daily.
I find that if one acts quickly, the pain and itch is reduced.
Good luck to everyone who suffers from this extremely annoying problem. Those unaffected (as is Mr C who tells me he is delighted to be married to me as he is seldom bitten when I am around!) has absolutely no idea of the magnitude of the problem in spoiling everyday life!
I can well believe that somehow they got under your ring, I've had similar, I don't know how they do it but they can bite through so many things. I have A+ blood and that doesn't protect me. When I lived near a marsh one particular afternoon/ evening I got bitten so badly on my arms that I couldnt get sleeves on so couldn't go to work until the swelling went down, I was so swollen. Another time, different place I got bitten by something like a horse fly or some other sort of horrible fly and it got infected, I got a horrendous carbuncular boil, had to go to the doc as it got worse, had a similar one with an ant bite. I've had anaphylactic reactions to bee stings, the one time I got headlice (in my 30s) from a child at my daughter's primary school , I didn't have many, but I reacted badly to the bites. Never had fleas, thank heavens, and I'm terrified of staying somewhere that has bedbugs. Maybe I had a sheltered upbringing but we never had headlice at my school, and bedbugs were something that Victorians had that had been eradicated.
Have you tried Avon Soft and Gentle spray oil, it keeps most ( if not all ) biting insects at bay
Years ago, my dear now deceased next door neighbour and I were gardening. The next day we stood mournfully comparing our respective legs - we had no ankles, thanks to mosquito bites that had covered our lower limbs and we were both suffering greatly with swollen and itchy legs. They find me, always. I was bitten by something malevolent in January, in my garden.
The Avon So Soft Oil is said to be used by the SAS as it is effective. Eating Marmite will help also and consuming Brewers' Yeast. Mosquitos are said to hate yeast!
Aveline
A friend told me that he and his wife are half a teaspoon of Marmite every day and mosquitos now avoid them. I don't know if that really works or they've suddenly become luckier.
Apparently, mosquitos don't like you if you eat lots of cheese either!
Avon Skin so Soft dry oil spray works very well
I too am allergic to mosquito bites, the worst I ever had were some Belgian mosquitos that really made a meal of me! I had bites the size of my childhood's half-crown coins! it took a month before they went down and stopped itching.
This year, it has been so wet, that we are bothered by ticks and they manage to bite through denims, long socks and any amount of cotton clothes on my top h alf!
I am the same as all you mosquito-attracting Grans. When we went to Mexico after the birth of our oldest grandchild eleven years ago, I had about 200 bites, all reactive. Scroll forward to now and our youngest daughter, now the mother of three, including said oldest, is planning to move the whole family to Mexico! Will I visit? not sure.
Avon Skin So Soft does nothing for me and neither does Marmite. I have used both copiously (if Marmite can be eaten copiously - perhaps not!) and nothing changes: I am just too delicious. Well, to biting insects, anyway..
I have heard that bities enjoy some blood groups more than others and I am also type-A. I wonder how much mileage there is that for a researcher, although perhaps that has been looked at before. Probably but with no clear results, else we would know of them.....
