They were too dangerous apparently. I was however allowed to go out riding on a horse in traffic!

I did have a pogo stick and it was really boring after the first hour!

I wanted long hair.
Mine was kept short, as it was thin and fine, but I wanted long, black, beautiful hair.

I wanted long hair too, but my mother had hated her long hair as a child and wouldn't allow it. She said that it hurt too much to brush it

An Easter egg. We were given bars of chocolate for Easter because Easter eggs were expensive for the amount of chocolate you got. I didn't care about value for money, I just wanted a proper Easter egg!

I wanted both a monkey and an elephant! I think that even as a child, I knew I could not have either of them. I am struck by the number of people who wanted things and did not tell their parents, who might in some cases have been able to get whatever it was for the child. How many of our children or grandchildren now want something but don't feel able to ask for it? Not necessarily material things - perhaps something like being listened to more and 'told' less. As a child it never occurred to me that I could say anything like that.

I always wanted the Jacko monkey that Woolworths sold. Never got one though.

Black patent shoes. With a bar. I only ever had Clarks brown lace ups, which had to last all year. I had to wear them for parties, when other girls had silver party shoes or black patent shoes, and in the summer when I really wanted some Clarks sandals. If we were going on holiday, I was allowed to take my school plimsolls. That was in the 1950s. Towards the start of the 60s dad’s hard work had led to promotion and I got summer sandals, and ‘brogue’ style school shoes, but it wasn’t until I was old enough to buy my own that I got black patent!

Oh yes, footwear was always an issue from me.

The only choice I had was black or brown.
Not platforms, or even a small wedge.

I also wanted books but hardly ever got them as presents - I usually got ‘useful’ presents like clothes and handkerchiefs. My best friend, an only child with quite well off parents, had a complete set of The Famous Five in hardback - this was the 50s. How I envied that! I had to make do with the library. I loved Chalet School books but read them in a very random order depending on what was available to borrow. I was just too young for the cheap paperback versions which came out in the 70s.

We were not overly well off but my mum tried to give us one thing we asked for at Christmas and for our birthdays and I was very happy with that. I think I knew from an early age that some things were not for us.

I really wanted a Barbie doll but had to make do with Sindy instead. My mother reckoned Barbie was too "tarty"!?
