Some small thing you longed for as a child, but never got. 🙁

Inspired by the donkey rides thread.

Until I was about 9, the whole family (6 of us) made a Saturday shopping trip to a town with an arcade where there were always a couple of Shetland ponies with bells on their harness. You could have a ride for sixpence.

I longed painfully for ride, but never even asked, since I was aware from a very young age that spare sixpences weren’t exactly plentiful.
What did you long for that never happened? (If anything.)

MissAdventure

cc I used to run around with a cardigan on my head, with the arms hanging down so I could flick them around like long hair.

I was so desperate for long hair that I used to plait my Mum's old stockings (American Tan of course!) and clipped each plait to the side of my head. I could then flick them around like you did MissAdventure, I thought they were marvellous - what must I have looked like?!! 😄

Same here, I really wanted a pony and as my grandparents had a small farm I thought I was in a good position to have one. My beloved gran eventually had a donkey.

MissAdventure Thu 04-Jul-24 13:37:57

They sound great Curlywhirly grin

I only wish I'd thought up that idea myself.

Always wanted pink, sparkling Cinderella high heeled dressing up shoes.

Daisydaisydaisy Thu 04-Jul-24 13:43:20

Not quite what you are asking but I always wanted a sibling My own age but My parents had Me at 40/48 so therefore My siblings were 9and 16 years older than Me

MissAdventure Thu 04-Jul-24 13:44:34

I wanted those too.
Wasn't allowed as they'd look silly, with my legs, mum said. smile
Talk about pouring cold water on your child's dreams!

I never had a proper doll and envied my friend's baby doll that had hair that could be washed and soft skin and life sized...was it Tiny Tears? I had a small thing in hard plastic. One year she was taken to the Dolls Hospital and had a wig glued on with two plaits. But could not be brushed or restyled. No love lost there!

Seems like most of us wanted a pony. I did too and went in for all the Win a Pony competitions. As an only child I also craved a big brother. Not a younger one you understand. One a couple of years older who'd bring his friends home (especially useful as protection and, as I approached teenage, prospective boyfriends).

I achieved the pony when I was 42, but never did get the big brother!

Jazzhands Thu 04-Jul-24 13:49:53

I wanted the swings not to be padlocked on a Sunday.

I longed to have a knickerbocker glory after seeing someone eat one at a cafe in Bournemouth when I was a child. I couldn't take my eyes off the tall glasses and long spoons and red sauce trickling through the ice cream. But such a thing was too expensive for our family. By the time I was grown up and could buy my own knickerbocker glory I couldn't think of anything I'd least like to eat.

Straight black hair, mine was blonde and curly 🙄

I wanted a rocking horse as a small child, and then to go on the French exchange as a teenager. Never got either sadly

I always wanted a brother or sister and never got one. Inspired by Rekarie's thread I then said if I can't have a brother or sister can I have a monkey instead. I could imagine having one and dressing it up and taking it for walks in my dolls pram but, unfortunately I never got any of my wishes and grew up a lonely little girl, which is probably why I love people and company even now.

I wanted a bus conductor’s set

nipsmum Thu 04-Jul-24 14:27:16

Having been born during the war,
I desperately wanted a proper baby doll.
They could not be bought but my mum found a second hand one with a chalk head and a cloth body. She spent many hours sewing and knitting clothes for my dolly, but I did get her. I felt very lucky. I was unfortunately a bit old for dollies by then.

sharon103 Thu 04-Jul-24 14:34:44

I always wanted a Silver cross coach dolls pram.
My friend had one. Her dad was an airline pilot so could afford one.

Lindylou23 Thu 04-Jul-24 14:36:40

I wanted a monkey, but it was Jacko the monkey sold in Woolworths, but whenever we went they were sold out. grin

I knew a pony was out of the question so asked and longed for a saddle that I could drape over the side of my swing's frame. I never got one so persisted in sitting on the frame without one, pretending I was riding a horse. It was very uncomfortable and occasionally agony if I tried the sitting up and down because you're trotting movements! I also asked for a riding hat, which never materialised either. I remember my mother scoffing at such a ludicrous idea. 😢. I also wasted energy longing for a rocking horse

pipsaucer Thu 04-Jul-24 14:57:16

I always wanted a snake belt but was never allowed one as "They were for Boys". Also a little box of indoor fireworks and sea monkeys, didn't get any of them but as an adult got the sea monkeys , sadly I'm too big now for a snake belt!

Musicgirl Thu 04-Jul-24 15:02:54

Black, patent leather shoes and white lacy tights, which were very popular at children’s birthday parties at the time. I finally had my patent leather shoes when I was grown up and could buy them for myself.

I really wanted a pony but my parents couldn't afford one. My lovely Dad used to take me up to what we called the "pony field" where the local horse dealer kept his horses and let me sit on the ponies - I was in heaven! Now I am retired and have a 3 acre field and the two gorgeous ponies who live in it belong to the great grandson of that horse dealer! So I can relive my childhood pony dreams even though I am just feeding them carrots and stroking them. I did have lessons as an adult but never felt that confident. Apart from thatcI had the most wonderful childhood.

Hollycat Thu 04-Jul-24 15:39:47

My mother made all my clothes beautifully, even my vests were knitted. But how I longed to go into a shop and try different things on. Then, for my 13th birthday, I was taken to C&A in Oxford Street and allowed to choose an overcoat. WOW! I picked one out and it looked lovely. Then my mother got hold of it and inspected the seams. She was not impressed which took the shine off somewhat, but I was allowed to keep it.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 04-Jul-24 15:53:05

Like so many of you, I longed for a bike, when I grew too big for my trike, but was told the roads were too dangerous, so no bike. Horse riding was out of the question too, but that I could accept, as I did have piano and ballet lessons,

But I longed for the kind of white summer hats, trimmed with broderie anglaise that other little girls wore to Mass.

My mother said they were ridiculous and I could wear a head-scarf or my school hat and blazer.

This makes a lovely picture in my head!
