Sunak will resign as soon as the leadership race begins.
His was a poisoned chalice, and nothing has changed.

Whoever wins will be Leader of the Opposition and thus gets a Ministerial-equivalent salary, car, etc. They probably think that's worth a punt as well as the honour and glory of leading the Tory Party into the wilderness.

A turn up for the books - Braverman is not going to stand.

I wonder if she actually is going to defect to Reform.

The daily mail has an article on Kemi Badenoch’s life leading to her deciding to go into politics. I knew little about her, other than disliking her politics. It’s interesting to know more about her background and motivations. The DM obviously takes a very positive view of her,

A pub finally opened in the main shopping street a few years ago.

The new chair of the 1922 Committee has been appointed today to replace Sir Graham Brady, and he will supervise the selection process. I know nothing about him, it is Bob Blackman, he is currently a backbencher. I thought Sir Graham Brady was good at his job, let’s hope Bob Blackman is too. It will be good to have a fresh face I think.

Braverman was in America the other day wasn’t she, giving a speech?

Iam64 Tue 09-Jul-24 16:00:05

It’s a worry isn’t it - that there don’t appear to be decent candidates to select from. We need a strong opposition whichever of the main parties in in government.

M0nica Tue 09-Jul-24 10:34:28

Iam64 there aren't any.

Iam64 Tue 09-Jul-24 09:12:07

I don’t know enough about likely candidates to replace Sunak. I do know enough about Braverman, Patel and Badenoch to hope they don’t become the next leader of the Conservative Party.

I’m concerned about the number of Reform votes. The other main parties will no doubt be analysing and working out how this surge to the right of the tories can be addressed. Starmer changed the Labour Party after the devastating defeat with what the electorate saw as too left and anti semitism. Let’s hope the conservative leader can re-build positively

That’s a ludicrous statement Babzi. Dislike Blair and his politics but don’t make meaningless statements

Galaxy Tue 09-Jul-24 08:51:19

If we keep throwing around the words psychopath, nazi, far right we render those words meaningless then when actual psychopaths and nazis come along, no one will listen to the warnings.

M0nica Tue 09-Jul-24 08:04:27

Don't be silly.

Charisma won him the 1997 election, and absolutely no evidence to show he is a psychopath.

babzi Tue 09-Jul-24 00:18:19

Tony Blair does not have charisma. The man is a psychopath!

Research shows that Frinton Cricket club sells Real Ale as does Tennis club and local pub.......

Singled out of pure curiosity as he is such a media figure and wondering what kind of constituency MP he will be. (applies to all parties, in terms of residency and being a good constituent MP.)

Spoilt locally - my MP was born/brought up in the area as was the last one so have expectations of what a good MP is.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 08-Jul-24 15:08:59

Isn’t it true that there are no pubs in Frinton as it was built on land owned by the Salvation Army who imposed covenants forbidding pubs? That wouldn’t suit him!

I don't know, where do all the other MPs live, not all are local to the area, the Labour Mp, trying to gain a foothold here, didnt win, lives 50 miles away from our local area, which under the new boundary rules, we came under. Many, under expense claims, rent a second home in the area. Why single him out??“

I can tell you exactly where NF will live. He’s looking to rent a home in Frinton, which (sadly) is part of his constituency now!

One of my oldest and dearest friends lives there, very close to the Cricket Club NF frequented on a regular basis during his campaign. She’s horrified, most of her friends there are too, but a small, but vocal section of the wealthy Frinton fraternity have welcomed him with open arms! No accounting for taste!

Lots of candidates “shipped” in for this election from across all parties.

Aveline

He was a decent and serious young man. We were all glad of him during lockdown. I don't like to see him denigrated. There are far worse than him.

I agree, in most respects he was a great chancellor (if you ignore, “eat out to spread Covid”.

He wasn’t a “leader” though. He was a courteous and respectful politician, with zero idea how Mr/Mrs Average managed day to day.

I thought his outgoing PM speech was exceptionally good.

I’d like to see a strong, respectful opposition with a strong, stable leader.

Who? I have no idea, not Pretti Patel!

I agree foxie the remarks she made were a disgrace.
Reform have so few MP's it's not necessary to pander to them.
On the issue of immigration it will be difficult for a new Conservative Party to come up with plans - Rwanda is dead in the water and Reforms' turn boats back not possible.

foxie48 Mon 08-Jul-24 14:10:18

Suella started her campaign for the leadership before the election which I thought was very dishonourable but I don't think she understands the concept of loyalty or being a team player. I'm another who thinks she would be a disaster for the Conservative party, she should join Reform it would be a better fit. I'm not surprised the numbers voting for UKIP and Reform are similar, it's basically the same party with the focus on blaming everything on immigration which attracts the same sort of voters.

Smileless2012

I agree that would be the wise thing to do Siope but it's highly unlikely.

KS is being compared to Tony Blair!!! He doesn't have anything like the charisma.

Where do you see that he is so smarmy with a silly grin!!

Wyllow3 Mon 08-Jul-24 13:55:59

I don't think it should be allowed: it favours those with money, not based on ability. Like all of us, you can contribute to your Party of choice of course.
