I had an aunt who, whenever I had a new item of clothing, even when I was 12, would say it was tarty. It was her favourite word. My mum and I used to laugh about it.
‘Tarty’ was a favourite word of my mother too - the other was ‘skimpy’ - which she tended to apply to anything that actually fitted properly. When I was about 14 she pushed me into buying a knitted sweater dress (with my own Christmas money) that was 2 sizes too big, since the size 10 was ‘skimpy’. 😩
As a result I hardly wore it - the size 14 ended up as a staple of her own wardrobe! That grated on me for years!
