The usual ‘says more about me’. Perhaps it does. I worked in a professional setting for my entire career, and there was a dress code. If you are a professional person you adhere to it. It is what’s expected. I appreciate that the majority on GN didn’t have to adhere to a strict dress code but that is no excuse for not understanding the importance of it in a professional setting. I dressed stylishly and certainly not frumpishly. AR has not taken on board the importance of how you are perceived as a professional woman. It’s not a fashion parade but you can still dress fashionably, attractively, but within the bounds of what the world expects of a professional woman. Whether she will ever learn the lesson I don’t know, but I’m not optimistic.

I can only think that GSM hasn't met many working tarts. Their professional dress code seems to require a lot more flesh on show. I loved the colour of Angela's suit and it made a change from the usual "I'm really a very serious business woman, look at my serious suit" look that they usually go for.

You really are up yourself tonight. Stop being so patronising, you’re not special, many of us were professionals, many of us had jobs as senior as yours, had to dress for work in appropriate clothes and follow business etiquette. She was wearing a trouser suit, in an unusual colour, and a white shirt. It was not tight or revealing. It would not be my choice. However, it does not constitute dressing like a tart, and there was no call for you to be so denigrating.

My serious suits were smart and edgy. But always appropriate. Never crumpled as though I’d slept in them, no matter how long the day. You can do a lot with accessories too. You don’t have to wear bright colours to be noticed among the men in sober suits.

I am still involved with our SME, and have on occasions been caught unawares dress wise, it hasn’t impaired my judgement or my professionalism.

GSM, of course you are entitled to your opinion but surely you do not have to be so unkind in expressing it ?

I have yet to come across someone else on GN who was a partner in a City law firm. I had to dress accordingly (and, Casdon, that doesn’t constitute being up myself).. I expect the deputy PM to dress to similar standards and don’t consider that unreasonable. She’s not a teacher or an office worker - in the absence of the PM she is in charge of the country.

I thought it was a ghastly colour, but she was well groomed, poor choice of material, but she had been up all night.

Anyway, definitely nothing like a tart, and as for her “professionalism” let’s wait and see. Maybe with some support and assistance she’ll grow into her role.

I’m surprised you haven’t encountered all sorts of people if you worked in a pro bono law centre. What were you doing? Cherry picking only the suitably-dressed clients?
