Princess diana
(182 Posts)Apparently Prince Harry compares his wife Meghan the same as princess diana.
Don’t think she is anything like her, no I don’t know her personally. My own opinion if anyone is compared to princess diana is Catherine/kate.
And anything that Harry and Meghan try to do then Prince William & Catherine can do better.

What a good job the RF have moved on, in terms of marrying virgins, living together before getting wed, etc.

If Charles and Diana had shared more of life together beforehand, they would never have married. What a good job the RF have moved on, in terms of marrying virgins, living together before getting wed, etc.
Yes. If those rules had not applied then Charles would have married the love of his life instead of being prevented from doing so, he would not have been sent away and she would not have married someone else.
He would not have been coerced into an unsuitable arranged marriage which made both of them unhappy.
However, every cloud has a silver lining, theirs being their two sons.
Thanks Callistemon. The marriage between Charles and Diana was doomed. The age gap, life experience so very different and of course , that cringe interview where he said ‘whatever in love means’ with her holding tears as she responded ‘of course’. They scarcely knew each other and had next to nothing in common.
Their sons are different personalities -something most of us will see in our own families. I wish them well
Anyway, I cannot see that Meghan is anything like Diana.
One was a fairly innocent 19 year old with stars in her eyes, the other a mature, experienced 35 year old divorcée.
Anniebach You always leap in to criticise Diana, but never a word of criticism for Camilla who slept with Charles while married to Parker Bowles and with 2 young children.
You’re correct Callistemon. I’ve always thought Harry’s comparison is influenced by his anger at the way he believes his mother, like his wife, was seen in the RF as non conformist, an outsider not complying to expectation
Iam64 I'm not sure if Camilla would have stuck with Charles as she was reputedly very much in love with Andrew Parker-Bowles too but I understand he was rather a 'ladies' man'. They, of course, had the blessing of their two children.
However, I do believe Camilla was (and is) the true love of Charles' life.
I feel sorry for him and Diana and for what their boys have had to endure as a consequence too.
I've never watched The Crown (imsginitive rubbish?) and do realise fairytales belong in books and films.

There have been a few nonconformists, though!
However, those who marry in are the ones disapproved of.
Is it the Press rather than the family themselves who manufacture the disapproval?

Oh goodness, Andrew P-B was no saint!
One rule for the men, another for a woman?
Well said
My impression is the members of the royal family have people who deal with the press. Their job, of course, is to ensure their RF person gets good publicity. Occasionally that may involve putting out a story painting another family member less favourably.
In my opinion the equally immature Charles and Harry made disastrous choices for their first wives, Diana and Meghan, who both resolutely ignored well-intentioned and supportive advice, with disastrous consequences.
Harry and Meghan remain married; does Harry look happy?
Would Charles and Camilla be as happy as they are now if they had married when they first met? No idea.
But again, only my opinion.

But what of Kanga , the press said of Charles speaking of Kanga
‘She is the only woman who really understands me’ the papers said so it must be true
Charles and Camilla’s affair was going strong when he married
Diana, the papers and Diana said so it must be true.
Charles had an affair with Tiggy, Diana said so it must be true.

Who did they paint less favourable ?

I know that, of course, Callistemon, PB was a rogue, but I was just pointing out to Annie that she criticises Diana for the very things that Camilla was guilty of.
I very much do NOT agree that there is one rule for men and another for women.

Harry’s comparison is influenced by Meghan telling him so, that she is like his mother.
I bet William doesn’t think that Catherine is like his mother in many ways, a loving mum yes, but much more grounded in all the ways that matter.
A stable family background for one thing.
Having said that, Diana’s influence has moved the RF on in so many ways.
All these years after her death, if she had lived, what would her role in the life of her family be now?
We shall never know.

I agree.
Charles was sent away ? No, he did what men in the royal family do, join the armed forces , he was in the Royal Navy for
5. Years
I really don’t think he wanted to marry earlier.

I do not believe that Diana was examined to make sure she was a virgin before she married, although I would think she was.
I expect she may have been examined to make sure she would be able to bear children.
I don’t know how an examination could prove that someone is a virgin, as I remember well reading in my youth that the hymen can be broken by ‘ horse riding or playing tennis’!
I also don’t recall Diana ever saying that such an examination took place.
And, would Charles have been tested to ensure he could provide an heir?
Interestingly, Lady Colin Campbell doubts whether Diana was a virgin, and does name people with whom Diana was involved before Charles.

I know for a fact that some RN personnel never seemed to have to do sea time or, if they were sent overseas, were lucky enough to get married accompanied.
Others spent most of their time at sea.
Lady Colin Campbell
🤔
You could be involved with someone without actually sleeping with them.
Diana said ‘I knew I had to keep myself tidy’ perhaps that someone should have told Camilla !
Lady Colin Campbell - sinking to new lows if she’s considered a reliable witness
What does "keep myself tidy" even mean?
Thought you read her book
