on Sunday evening
so staff can leave early and watch the football.
Closing time is expecting to be at 19:30pm.

Sounds reasonable enough to me. I can remember when all shops were shut on Sundays, full stop. Surely the population can manage without shopping on a Sunday evening or do you think we will see “panic buying “ and hoarding ? hmm
Petrol stations will still be open though.

Our little Co-Op has also put out that they will be closing at 7.30. They usually stay open until 10 every night.

Good for them. No doubt there will be complaints, but it’s a Sunday after all, when the big shops close at 4.

Folk just need to organise and plan ahead, which so many seem incapable of doing nowadays.

I think this is a small but welcome sign that, after years and years of the erosion of their rights and privileges, employees are being seen as human beings with lives outside work.

Far too many people are struggling to make ends meet while working zero hours contracts or trying to fulfil difficult over- filled delivery schedules. Shop workers seem to be expected to work round the clock.

When I was a nurse I had to work as part of a team providing
24/7 coverage but I have never been able to understand the need for non-essential services to be provided on this basis.

I have no interest in football myself but clearly it has gripped the nation so why shouldn't shop workers be given the opportunity to watch the 'beautiful' game?

Just this.

Youngest GD’s school has sent letters home saying the children don’t need to be in school on Monday until 10am if they wish - though all staff will be in at usual time.

Extra time to sober up?🤔

I think we can all manage without having to shop after 7.30 of a Sunday .

eazybee Fri 12-Jul-24 08:55:00

I think it is a pity that any supermarket has to stay open after 7.30pm on Sunday.

NannyJan53 Fri 12-Jul-24 08:55:18

I was telling my DGD4 (12) how all shops used to be closed on Sundays.

Her reaction was 'what if you wanted to buy food?' Er, you bought it in one of the other 6 days smile

My GCs too. Sounds very sensible to me.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 12-Jul-24 09:39:57

Our GC had until 10.15am to be in school on Thursday after the semi-final and have the same on Monday.

Why all this disruption
for football??

I admit I'd prefer all shops (except corner ones and the odd pharmacy) to be closed on a Sunday though!

Sago Fri 12-Jul-24 10:32:31

During the 2003 Rugby World Cup our son’s school tailored the timetable around the games.
I don’t think our boys will ever forget watching the games with all their friends particularly the final!

Its a great thing that schools and organisations are allowing flexibility.

As if everyone is obsessed with boring bloody football, which I'm not!

nanna8 Fri 12-Jul-24 11:02:01

They used to be closed on Thursday afternoons when I was young. I think we were more aware of the needs of shopkeepers then.

HettyBetty Fri 12-Jul-24 15:28:29

I have no interest in the football and have other things to do on Sunday evening.

That said, it is clearly of interest to some people and closing shops on a Sunday evening is showing consideration for the staff.

Like others here I can remember when no shops opened on Sundays, except the newsagent for a couple of hours. We all managed to plan ahead!

My granddaughters school are the same. We may even have one here to watch the footie with Grampy and his mate. I’ll be watching something else in bed 😁

You are in the minority

dalrymple23 Fri 12-Jul-24 20:14:14

I am with Spuddy - cannot stand footie. Anyway, I may be archaic but retail premises were shut on a Sunday so that people were free to go to church. Remember what that is?

Urmstongran Fri 12-Jul-24 20:18:37

Sundays in the late 60’s and very early 70’s were just so very boring.

ordinarygirl Fri 12-Jul-24 20:28:40

hate all sports - why does everybody think it is important? we accept that not everyone is religions or supports a particular political party but when it comes to sport we are all expected to listen to the monotonous speel.

OMG! Closing at 19.30 on a Sunday! I'm going to have to panic buy and stockpile everything.

I was thinking it must be a slow news day where OP lives.
