We are in our pj’s on the bed, tv on already! We’ve eaten our tea and are ssettled, ready. I’ve got a rosé wine poured it’s on my bedside table. We know how to live!

I’ve just peered over the balcony. The main road is empty! One lone cyclist, then a taxi passed. That’s the sum of traffic right now in usually busy Urmston. It’s like a ghost town …. So quiet! The bars up the road will be buzzing, just not the one below us as they don’t have TV screens and closed early to let their staff go to enjoy the game. Himself told me most of the bars are ‘ticket only’ tonight as on NYE!

What are YOU doing?

C’mon England!

over-paid tv pundits my thoughts too Callistemon which is why I posted what I did last night Casdon. I agree that Linekar was a great footballer but they all sit there with their critical opinions, yet none of them ever played for their country in a final.

Spain played so well, a deserved win. We have a good team with some youngsters coming through, onwards England, World Cup in two years 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Thanks for the thread Urms.

England did well to get to the final but were pipped at the post in the final minutes.

Well done Gareth Southgate, who has been a calm, steady hand on the tiller, steering them to two finals over the years.

And now the nastiness and recriminations begin by those who sit at home in armchairs, over-paid tv pundits, those who couldn't kick a ball if they tried, but who know so much better how to manage the England team. 😡

Perhaps your grandson could be an election predictor when he is older maddyone? Save us all the bother!

Joseann Mon 15-Jul-24 07:51:01

That's the thing about football. The game is universal, and funnily enough, I also had messages from friends both in France watching it, and from relatives in New Zealand! It kind of links everyone together.

Lovely message from the king. I think they did well but the better team won.

My ten year old grandson cried at the result, and no, he wasn’t kept up late to watch. He lives in New Zealand and so it’s morning over there. Mum had rearranged her work schedule so she could watch with the children. His little brother said to Mr M, his grandad, ‘well it’s a bit good, and a bit sad, good because I predicted the result, but sad because we lost.’
He did predict the result too!

I don't follow football but glad I watched. Since most of Europe seemed to be en fête today, and here in France le quatorze juillet/Fête Nationale was being celebrated * and the air and the night sky was filled with the sound of music and enormous fireworks, it was tempting to watch the match. The temperatures dropped a little, the wine stayed chilled and even the Cigales/cicadas eventually shut up. Glad everyone enjoyed it.

* 'Bastille Day' is an English name not used here by the French.

What a wonderful bunch of Twinkletoes are the Spanish team. The youngest player was superb, together with Williams (good old Spanish name? 😉) and I think that England did a good job in mostly managing to contain them. But sadly, not quite good enough. I reckon the better team won but that England's success in getting to the final was well deserved. Love Southgate ( hate the shouty, inane t.v. commentaries) and really hope that English football benefits from the example he sets and all the efforts he has made.

Night Urms and Himself, sleep well, and well done, England!

Callistemon213 Sun 14-Jul-24 23:03:53

Ps Nanny is Spanish!!

Callistemon213 Sun 14-Jul-24 23:02:37

Nanny.
Or Granny Carole and Grandpa Michael?
I wonder if they watched it on the TV.

Maggiemaybe Sun 14-Jul-24 23:01:49

My view of the royal family does owe a lot to Sue Townsend’s The Queen and I.

Maggiemaybe Sun 14-Jul-24 22:54:36

That’s a good message from the king. DH and I were wondering who was looking after Louis while Catherine and Charlotte were at Wimbledon, William and George in Berlin.

We decided it wouldn’t be Camilla, as she’d have her feet up with a fag and a bottle of wine, watching the match.

Casdon Sun 14-Jul-24 22:46:49

That’s unfair Smileless. Lineker was an outstanding football player, as good or better than any of the England team tonight, but one player doesn’t carry a team through to the final.

Well done England for getting there tonight. My son who is a football geek thinks that the young Spanish team have the potential to be dominant in Europe for the next few years, and there’s no shame in losing to them.

Excellent message!

Smileless2012 Sun 14-Jul-24 22:34:17

Well said King Charles and as for Linekar and co. none of them ever got to a final.

I can well imagine the celebrations in Spain !

We're going down to the sea front, son wants to join the revelry 🥳

Galaxy

Maybee you need to keep walking sad

I took the pony in the field up the road a carrot and had a little chat with him about the football. We’d lost by the time I got back. Had it been penalty shoot outs I would have had to go for another walk. I’m glad we scored after I’d left though and didn’t lose as badly as I thought we would. We didn’t deserve to win.The pundits can’t say what they really think.

Sweetpeasue Sun 14-Jul-24 22:17:21

But we did get to the final. Not bad at all! Well done England.

rafichagran Sun 14-Jul-24 22:17:06

Thanks Urms I have enjoyed this thread, not the result though.

crazyH Sun 14-Jul-24 22:15:36

And Urms thanks for starting this thread, but didn’t see any posts from you since, or I might have just been too engrossed in the game. Goodnight again

crazyH Sun 14-Jul-24 22:13:41

Goodnight all ..

Joseann Sun 14-Jul-24 22:10:46

A shame for England, but Spain were the better players.
