Deleted Threads

(33 Posts)

A recent thread has been deleted at the OP's request.

The OP asked a question and the answers given were reasonable, not controversial and an interesting discussion ensued.

When others have asked for threads or posts to be deleted, because they might regret what they posted, the requests are sometimes refused, despite asking more than once.

Decisions seem to be quite arbitrary. šŸ¤”

This is not a thread about a thread, it is just a general observation.

I have often questioned the notion that the OP of any thread has any ownership of it.
Clearly there will be times when a thread with eg a specific question, has run its course and is no longer relevant. What to wear to a wedding for instance.
Curiously, these threads often stay up with comments added months or even years later!
A moratorium on such threads would make sense.
On the other hand, there are threads where the OP may not like what they are hearing and asks for the whole thread to be pulled - and I would question that.
Or there are threads where OP feels they somehow ā€œhostā€ the thread and seem to feel obliged to comment on each and every post as it occurs, even ā€œthankingā€ posters for dropping by.
And there are normal threads- those where comments or advice or reactions remain relevant to the vast majority of posters, entertaining, useful and pertinent - and I remain grateful for these! !

As ever, I’ve missed the deleted thread. Interesting point from Callistemon and Maw about the notion that an OP owns or hosts the thread they started.
The wrong trousers thread a case in point
I understand someone asking for a post, or a thread they started being deleted if it contained information that might identify them. Otherwise unless it’s deteriorated into an unedifying bun fight should it stand

I can understand it if someone feels that they may have given out too much personal information and would like the thread taken down for that reason, but to ask a short question with no opinion, then to ask for the thread to be taken down is puzzling.

I remember asking for a post to be taken down after thinking "perhaps I shouldn't have said that", ut despite pleas it remained.

Can't remember the exact title of that thread but it was about eating animals and an interesting discussion ensued with some historical and other facts.

Not overly controversial at all and a subject of interest.

Gransnet owns the thread and all our posts so it is their decision.

This. I left the site a few years ago because I felt I had given too much information. When we are emotionally lost and vulnerable we reach out to others but it isn't always wise.

Luckily I fought my battles and hopefully will not have to fight them again but if I'm in need of some support in my personal life I won't ever post on social media again.

Callistemon213 Wed 17-Jul-24 09:09:25

I think many posters aren't aware of that keepingquiet (apt name!) and the fact posts can be published in other media outlets around the world.

If I had posted a thread on the forums asking for peoples help and had received numerous replies, I would think it only courteous, after the thread being active for a few months, for me to let everyone know the outcome and thank people for their help.

I am amazed that many people do post on the forums, asking for help with their family problems, receive lots of advice and the poster just vanishes into thin air. What is the point of posting if we never find out what happened in the end.

This hapens such a lot and makes me wonder if it is worthwhile replying to these posters as you never find out what happened. It is like reding a book and find the last few pages are gone.

Sorry for the errors in spelling, my keyboard has now got sticky keys.

It is publishing.
Personally, I like seeing my words in print!
Part of the reason I like being here.

But I do agree that if someone has overshared, it should be pulled by GN.

Maggiemaybe Wed 17-Jul-24 09:49:53

I missed the latest deleted thread (as per usual). But I agree that decisions to delete threads or comments are often arbitrary. I’d like to see fewer deletions all round. It often happens that a controversial or mean comment disappears, some who’ve seen it argue against it, some who haven’t (or pretend not to have) deny it ever existed, and it all gets very messy. Once we’ve taken the decision to post our views, they should imo stand for others to comment on if they wish. To my knowledge I’ve only had one post deleted in 12 years, and I wasn’t notified about that so don’t know why it went. smile

Exceptions of course for people who’ve inadvertently outed themselves.

kittylester Wed 17-Jul-24 10:58:17

I think there is a difference between posters saying thank you for your help/replies/suggestions and posters starting a more general thread and believing they have ownership of it.

Oreo Wed 17-Jul-24 11:04:38

I agree kittylester they’re two different things.
I saw some of the thread called I think, ā€˜do you eat animals’ and nothing seemed controversial. I didn’t comment on it as wasn’t all that interested.

LauraNorderr Wed 17-Jul-24 11:11:46

I’ve made my views on this very clear many times.
Unpleasant posters can be very sneaky. Stir things up with nastiness, await responses then have their part in it deleted. Then others think the responder is in the wrong and the unpleasant poster becomes the victim.
My view, as always, is to let things remain so that all can judge fairly.
We are not a bunch of wimpy pearl clutchers. We are grown women with life experience of trials and tribulations, we perfectly capable of forming our own judgement.
Also I agree with Kitty regarding posters coming back to a thread with thanks or outcome. This is good manners not ownership.

Theexwife Wed 17-Jul-24 11:28:46

There was a thread the other day where the poster wanted it taken down as people were disagreeing with them, there were no grounds so it was left.

It would not be much of a forum if a thread could be removed if the poster didn’t like the way the thread was going.

I would rather that the only removal would be if someone had inadvertently given out too much info, even leave the bullies comments so they can be seen by all.

merlotgran Wed 17-Jul-24 11:29:40

Was the ā€˜Do you eat animals?’ thread deleted? I saw a bit of it late last night but was too tired to comment.

Joseann Wed 17-Jul-24 11:32:40

I missed the deleted thread, I was at a pilates class.

I guess the OP in general has no idea how their thread might develop, so in that way they take a risk starting one. But then if everyone were worried about that, no one would start a thread.

I started one thread recently from abroad to ask about something innocuous happening in the UK. It went nasty in terms of poster getting a pile on, nothing at all to do with my question, just how the discussion evolved. GNHQ refused my request to take it down, probably rightly. It eventually petered out anyway.

Yes, nothing personal that I saw and a general discussion.

It's a mystery.

That’s a shame. I would have posted last night but it was late and I wanted to see how the thread developed before commenting.

It’s an interesting and topical subject so why are we being treated like children?

Oops sorry, I assumed it was from this morning. (I wasn't at pilates all night! I usually just look at the "I'm on" threads until I have longer to sit down and read).
But interesting points being made here.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 17-Jul-24 12:10:48

It never occurs to me that I ā€œownā€ a thread. I am just grateful to people who are kind enough to reply.

Of course all content on GN is owned by GN.

It has legal responsibilities for a start apart from taking down stuff in poor taste etc.

I am pretty relaxed about it all tbh.

Nevermind eating animals, I'm smelling a very large rat! šŸ€

It was a perfectly innocuos thread I did post on it and it was quite interesting looking into why it feels justified to eat some animals and a big no no to eat others it was interesting from the psychology of how we all tick
Nothing nasty no big disagreements unlike, some other recent disgusting threads that have gone on and on and on in very poor taste
