British so-called Summers are the pits! 144 seasons in one day, if your stupid enough to think you can 'plan' anything it'll go wrong, and then you can't sleep on airless nights so you spend the following 24hrs just being CRABBY!

Just saying......

It has rained every day since Christmas so finally we have a few days of warm weather 😊

karmalady Fri 19-Jul-24 08:33:47

I set up my cave the night before, my house is east/west. Soon after lunch I can sit outside in the shade with my cold drink and gaze upon the thousands of flowers in my ground-covered garden, humming loudly with hundreds of bumble bees. It is a joyous sight to see the sun lighting up my garden and I have opened up the east window shutters by now and closed the west side

Yes it is warm at night but my bedding is appropriate and my pedestal fan is on for two hours, directed onto me

It is gorgeous right now, warm but not stifling heat and we can help ourselves to stay cooler, good tips above. We need this sunshine more than ever, the general uk mood needs uplifting

Lived abroad quite a lot, so my tips for cooler night. find out that old hot water bottle and fill with very cold water and put a couple of ice cubes in it. then you can rest your feet on it, which is lovely and cooling. No hot water bottle left? then get those little blue freezer packs for lunch boxes, wrap in towel and do the same with that. before you go to bed put cold or very cool water in a basin or bowl and rest hands and up to wrists in it for a while. Then pat dry and off to bed. Get clean flannel, put in very cold water, squeeze out gently and put into a plastic bag and again on a blue freezer pack beside your bed. Then when needed take out of bag and put across your forehead and close your eyes. . Shut curtains early in the day and when weather cools (if it does!) open windows and slightly open curtains so that you get the breeze through cold water or fruitjuice that has been in the fridge , put into thermos flask and put by the bed so that when you are awake and thirsty you can have cool drink. Do have a very thin sheet over you, as it will stop wretched flies landing on you and also gives you the more usual sense of a covering if that is what you are used to doing.if the evening cools down take a stroll round the garden just before you go to bed so that you are already cooling down , or put a chair outside and sit in the cool and let yourself calm and cool down. Hope these are some ideas that might help

I echo all of that PLUS I would add that if your bedroom has been in the sun all day, to also open a window in another room, on the side of the house that hasn't had the sun on it during the day. The air from the cooler side will rush into your bedroom to replace the warmer air which is rising away from your own bedroom window.

Or you can get small electric fans quite cheaply - station one of those near your bedroom door where it can pick up air and send it towards you. If you stand a clothes horse behind it, loaded with wet towels, they will cool the air for it to collect. You have to be imaginative to win!

I once read a suggestion of putting a thick bath towel on top of the bottom shee. I find that helps if I get restless.
Also, try to get a through passage of air by having windows open or at least ajar at the other end of the house from your bedroom but I expect you've tried that.

Only one more night of it by all accounts!

Mae13 please let us enjoy a few days of warm weather. You have most of the year with the cull and rain.

Good grief 2 days of sunshine and we have the big old moan
Perhaps you should consider moving to Iceland

I assume you do not have anything to do all day except lounge about watching everyone else working? I think I once heard it referred to as BenidormBrain?

Ok let’s answer this Mae seeing as you were so rude
I m nearly 80 and WORK at least 20 hours a week often more I also keep an allotment, growing all my own veg and I look after two other gardens as well as join in street cleans etc What do you do ?
So maybe you owe me an apology for your severe and incorrect judgement I ll accept it with grace

Urmstongran Fri 19-Jul-24 08:51:11

Blimey mae13 I wouldn’t like to get on the wrong side of you.

Charleygirl5 Fri 19-Jul-24 08:56:40

Sorry to say I am enjoying the heat. I am permanently cold so this is lovely. My house for some reason always feels cool so I do not need a fan and last night I had a good night's sleep with my duvet over me.

Today I will sit in the shade in the garden enjoying this weather. Winter is around the corner, it has rained so much why not enjoy this gorgeous warmth? We have seen little of it.

silverlining48 Fri 19-Jul-24 09:14:46

Agree with you Charley girl. Only the second consecutive warm day this summer , let’s enjoy it.

Mt61 Fri 19-Jul-24 09:23:55

3.5 tog duvet & Meaco fan next to my bed, out for the count, Heaven!

At 3am I think that the OP was overtired and her reaction was understandable - give a little everyone - be kinder.

Absolutely-tootly

It is hard to sleep on warm muggy nights.

Oreo Fri 19-Jul-24 09:31:07

I agree with the poster who recommended the fan on a slow setting, tho I don’t like it on my face and direct it to my middle bits. Also sleeping nuddy under a sheet only is pretty good.

I thought your original comment to Mae13 really rude tbh.

Good ideas, I also keep the blind and curtains shut all day and just open the window at night.

pascal30 Fri 19-Jul-24 09:44:52

Mael if you have to work during the day then I agree it is awful not being able to sleep.. but you have had some good suggestions on here for future hot nights.. and we really need to get some heat into our bones during the day for our health.. I agree with Bluebelle that we should be relishing this hot weather while we can.. I hope you sleep better tonight.

I don't know where everyone else has been but (apart from a few fairly pleasant days in May) this summer has been cold, grey, wet, windy and awful. In the South West the temperature has been, on average, 14 degrees during the day and that's if we're lucky. I've been swathed in coats, trousers and boots for months and the heating has been put on for an hour at night. I know I'm far from alone. Everyone on this forum and elsewhere has been shivering and moaning about it. Even on Mumsnet which is generally a younger demographic, people have been putting their electric blankets on. It looks as though we'll have 2 days of sunshine and warmth which at the end of July surely isn't too much to ask.

jusnoneed Fri 19-Jul-24 10:02:23

Curtains are shut at the front as the sun is beating down at the moment, will open the front of the house around midday as the sun goes around and then close up the back.
If it gets too hot at night I come downstairs for a bit, always cooler.
I have previously used the blue ice blocks, in a plastic bag and wrapped in a towel and then on my pillow. Lovely to rest your head on or against.

The problem here at night when you want windows open are darn gulls, they seem to feel the need to screech and fly about at all hours. Every year we get more of the things nesting. I also suspect that's why a lot of the small birds have gone.

I have done that in a B&B where the bottom sheet was polyester/cotton (mostly polyester, not much cotton) over a mattress with a plastic cover, and the outside temperature in the shade was over 80 degrees F (26.7 C) My body was sticking to the hot sweaty plastic mattress through the thin sheet. The bath towel made it possible to sleep.

There are people who love the heat, people who can tolerate it and people who are laid low by it and we don’t get to choose which sort of person we are. To all those who are hating it, you have my sympathy, I hope you’ve found helpful hints here and if you need to vent you should feel free to do so.

I think the heat may be making some people a little tetchy.

In this country , who gets the better deal ?
I’m sitting in the garden, in the shade and making the most of the ( not overwhelming warmth). No doubt will be huddled inside again before many days are passed.

aggie Fri 19-Jul-24 11:48:57

I love the long days and bright evenings , I open windows ad drink cool drinks
We definitely don’t get overheated here in Northern Ireland

Jewell another rude person !
My original post was in answer to a moan that had a swear word in the title! So seemed quite robust to me It was not a personal attack as Mae13 and your reply has been….
