Someone nicked my shopping!

Oh dear so sorry to hear this. Is there a chance someone took it by mistake thinking it was their shopping? But not a good chance I suppose.

I hardly live in the best part of the UK but to cut a long story short a man had a right go at me over driving (he was in the wrong lane) but waited for me at the Aldi doors and started on me and I was flustered and felt threatened. Did my shopping and opened the car boot and can hardly believe I put my hand bag in and felt I just wanted to get away and put the shopping on the floor and drove off! Got home and thought were is the shopping? Drove back to Aldi and some nice person had handed it in.

But will not leave you with a nice feeling at all.

As we are told that the Police will not investigate crimes where goods less than £200.00 in value are involved, doesn't that give a clear message to dishonest people that they have an implied permission to steal anything below this value?

This has actually been going on for several years, hence why I would never have my shopping separated from me it goes near my feet or on my lap, sad state of affairs isn’t it, I’ve been on a bus before and a lady dropped her phone a man shouted that she had dropped it and in a split second another fella grabbed the phone pushed by her and ran off the bus, the driver heard and saw him run off the bus didn’t do anything we could only get description this was several years ago, I’m not sure whether buses had cameras installed years ago, I also hate to see mostly youngsters walking along with their phones showing from back pockets and lot of men do the same with their wallets on show,

I was once unloading bags of shopping from my car boot. While I was putting one bag in the house, another vanished from the boot. However the person left a £5 note. I guess it was just too much effort to walk up to the shops!

Our local food bank is in quite a deprived area and most recipients are on foot.

This happened to me years ago. I was fairly hard up and had bought some cakes and treats for my friends that were coming round. I put my shopping down for a minute and it was gone. I actually saw a woman walk out the shop with it. It was a local shop and I saw her the next day, so I quite pleasantly said that I think she picked up my shopping by mistake yesterday- giving her chance to fess up. But she just shook her head and scarpered.

Last week my friend went to a stately home and came across a couple helping themselves to some beautiful hydrangeas in the border. My friend’s partner approached them and told them in no uncertain terms to stop stealing flowers! It turned out that the thieves were actually the owners of the stately home and were gathering flowers for the church. Things aren’t always what they seem.

Re food banks. The charity I work for ran one, we passed on to another charity some years ago as didn’t have the capacity to meet need. I always remember a lady from a very affluent area coming along to the food bank. Poor lady was separated/divorced from her husband and was bringing up teenage girls on her own. She then was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer at which time her employer decided to make her redundant. I felt so sorry for her and like many people using food banks she was ashamed but desperate. I ran our food bank for several years and although there was the odd chancer most of them were straight up and the victim of circumstances. Best not to judge I think.

Similarly, although stealing your shopping was awful, I do genuinely believe that most people are reasonably honest. I am sorry and hope that it is an annoyance and doesn’t represent a significant problem. Good luck

Just because someone has a decent car doesn't mean they're not eligible to use a food bank.
Think about someone disabled, on benefits and driving a Motability car for example.

I do rock up to our local food bank in my BMW estate but it's to do drop offs and help with deliveries of donations. It never occurred to me that people might think I might be taking the p.
We have a few volunteers who help with picking people up at home and taking them back and forward to the food bank, people who struggle with mobility etc. I'm one of those too. So I guess it looks like I park the car and go in the main door with someone!

Oh how mean Maggierose. I'd be pretty upset if this happened to me.
One story where thieves might have done less well was when my daughter's car window was smashed, just before Christmas, for the rogues to remove a large Mark's and Spencer bag. It was full of clean, folded dusters and rags donated by me for her new ( grubby) rental house.
And I do drive to and from my volunteering shift at foodbank, sometimes coming out with a full bag. It will be donated clothes and bedlinen for me to wash. I drive an ancient Aygo, feel free to give me a wave.

I always put bags on the seat neat to me or on the floor.

On a lighter note, my daughter left her mobile phone on the bus last week (blame three over excited children!). She assumed it was lost forever although she could track it using my phone. It was still on the bus and ended up in lost property at the bus station as some kind soul had handed it to the driver! My daughter was so relieved. Restores my faith in humanity a little!

I have heard of two people having breathing equipment stolen. One on cruise ship and on a train. This was many years ago . 1990s I think.

People may have fallen on hard times after they bought their SUVs and why on earth are you monitoring cars at a food bank?

About 5 years ago I was in the queue at the M and S Cafe. There were a couple behind me who opened the top of my backpack removed my purse and were buying groceries in another store 30 minutes later 😳. As well as stealing my cash and cards they took the photos of my grand children which upset me dreadfully. I phoned DH who stopped the cards and the bank reimbursed me for the groceries they bought. M and S were supportive but wouldn’t let me see the CCTV to identify them. 😏

Oddly enough that morning I had remembered my late mum’s advice to always have my house keys on me and my Bus Pass which I did.

Since then I have chains on my bags for my keys, purse and mobile phone. The bu**ers won’t get me a second time.

That’s awful NanKate , and it’s why I don’t use a backpack anymore or a shoulder bag without a zip as I had my purse stolen from a shoulder bag with just a popper in the middle .

I suppose there lies the difference between an opinion and an assumption.

Most buses have cctv.

You may be able to trace the thief if you call them and/or the police and explain what happened.
They should just need the bus number and the time that you were on the bus.

How do you know they weren't volunteers helping at the Food Bank?

How many possession do you expect someone to sell before you 'allow' them to be referred to a Food Bank by a professional with the experience and training to make an assessment?

Selling valuables second hand never achieves their value to the original owner, and if said owner needs to have a reliable vehicle for work, transporting disabled relatives and their kit or whatever, how are they going to manage without at the time that they are already in financial distress, or replace it going forward?

Went to Cologne on a coach tour for the Xmas markets. When we arrived back everyone took their duty free and presents bags from the storage area inside the coach. One lady was saying her carrier bag had gone and ran around asking everyone but nobody owned up. Bad thing to do to people you had been on the trip with.

I was in John Lewis cafe once and put my bag and shopping down on the floor beside me, some one hooked it under the chair and made off with the lot. never found out who - thieves are always with us.

That reminds me of years ago I was sitting in a a cafe when suddenly a young woman jumped up and said, “have you got a bag?” My bag was gone. She’d seen 2 girls make off with it by hooking it up with an umbrella. She said “Come, on, we’ll catch them” and ran off into the street with me trailing behind her. The 2 girls were running ahead with us in hot pursuit. One of them flung my bag back at me as they ran round a corner where coincidentally there were a couple’s of police support officers who nabbed them. They asked us to come to the police station (closed down now of course) to make a statement. My saviour, the young woman, said “Not right now I’ve left my dinner in the cafe.” I heard later they were 2 young Romanian girls who were not charged.
