I don't like leaving bags in an unsupervised rack. It always worries me when putting luggage on the rack at the end of a train carriage.

I feel the same and at airports too!
So much is left to trust which is good I suppose. My DM once saw her suitcase being picked up by a stranger. She thought he was helping her and thanked him but he looked surprised.

It doesn't matter where you shopped if your shopping is stolen, don't be such a snob.

I expect the OP wishes she had shopped at Aldi instead of Waitrose because it would have been cheaper, (I assume) and seeing as someone pinched it, well, better to have spent say £20 instead of £30 or whatever.

Shouldn’t have been stolen, wherever it was from.

My daughter shops at Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl, she never tells me she has been to the supermarket. She always names the particular shop. Normal practice I'd say.

We were far more cavalier with pets and children when I was a young mum.
Babies left outside shops in prams for ages; dogs in cars with a window open.
My own DC would be horrified!

No, she wasn't. It was a long time ago, in Bristol. Thry were heartbroken wondering if she was being cared for or stolen for dog fighting, poor little thing.

They adopted two little rescue dogs afterwards.

Well it COULD have been a mistake. Once, on a busy crowded train, the train pulled into my station and I hastily picked up my bags from the table in front. It was only when I was on the platform I realised I had also taken the bag containing sandwiches, drink and cake belonging to the lady opposite me. By the time I got onto the platform and realised what I'd done it was too late. I often wonder what she thought of me - especially as we had been chatting!

We put things in the boot, thinking they are out of sight.

Friends had left their small dog in the car for a few minutes with the window down an inch. When they got back, the window had been forced down and the dog had been taken.

I was given a lift to my DM funeral in DSiL hatchback car. While we were at the crematorium, the car window was smashed and my small rucksack containing my purse and passport was removed from the boot along with DDs camera with photos of my new baby DGD.
I was so distressed. I had to spend time on the phone cancelling all my cards etc and missed spending precious time with relatives afterwards.
I was told that thieves often target cemeteries and crematoria when people are distracted.

Re "rocking up to food banks" in expensive vehicles..
Have you ever thought maybe they have suddenly lost their job and are hoping to quickly find another, found themselves sofa-surfing after a relationship break down or that the car was a work vehicle?

Let's not judge.

Not only that there are foodbanks which need referring to and food saves where anyone can go and they idea is just to make use of the food rather than wasting it. Completely different things, but may be called the same in some places

That reminds me of years ago I was sitting in a a cafe when suddenly a young woman jumped up and said, “have you got a bag?” My bag was gone. She’d seen 2 girls make off with it by hooking it up with an umbrella. She said “Come, on, we’ll catch them” and ran off into the street with me trailing behind her. The 2 girls were running ahead with us in hot pursuit. One of them flung my bag back at me as they ran round a corner where coincidentally there were a couple’s of police support officers who nabbed them. They asked us to come to the police station (closed down now of course) to make a statement. My saviour, the young woman, said “Not right now I’ve left my dinner in the cafe.” I heard later they were 2 young Romanian girls who were not charged.

I was in John Lewis cafe once and put my bag and shopping down on the floor beside me, some one hooked it under the chair and made off with the lot. never found out who - thieves are always with us.

Went to Cologne on a coach tour for the Xmas markets. When we arrived back everyone took their duty free and presents bags from the storage area inside the coach. One lady was saying her carrier bag had gone and ran around asking everyone but nobody owned up. Bad thing to do to people you had been on the trip with.

Our local food bank is in quite a deprived area and most recipients are on foot.

How do you know they weren't volunteers helping at the Food Bank?

How many possession do you expect someone to sell before you 'allow' them to be referred to a Food Bank by a professional with the experience and training to make an assessment?

Selling valuables second hand never achieves their value to the original owner, and if said owner needs to have a reliable vehicle for work, transporting disabled relatives and their kit or whatever, how are they going to manage without at the time that they are already in financial distress, or replace it going forward?

Most buses have cctv.

You may be able to trace the thief if you call them and/or the police and explain what happened.
They should just need the bus number and the time that you were on the bus.

I suppose there lies the difference between an opinion and an assumption.

That’s awful NanKate , and it’s why I don’t use a backpack anymore or a shoulder bag without a zip as I had my purse stolen from a shoulder bag with just a popper in the middle .

About 5 years ago I was in the queue at the M and S Cafe. There were a couple behind me who opened the top of my backpack removed my purse and were buying groceries in another store 30 minutes later 😳. As well as stealing my cash and cards they took the photos of my grand children which upset me dreadfully. I phoned DH who stopped the cards and the bank reimbursed me for the groceries they bought. M and S were supportive but wouldn’t let me see the CCTV to identify them. 😏

Oddly enough that morning I had remembered my late mum’s advice to always have my house keys on me and my Bus Pass which I did.

Since then I have chains on my bags for my keys, purse and mobile phone. The bu**ers won’t get me a second time.

People may have fallen on hard times after they bought their SUVs and why on earth are you monitoring cars at a food bank?

I have heard of two people having breathing equipment stolen. One on cruise ship and on a train. This was many years ago . 1990s I think.
