My very old car is on its last legs. Perhaps this is the answer?

Love the idea! But I am sure they would only work on the smoothest of pavements (none of those roud me!)
But a decent mobility scooter can, in certain circumstances, be a reasonable alternative to a car.
You need to decide if you need a road-going one, and if so, what the safety of those roads might be. You also need to consider carrying capacity. Mine has a stupid little basket that holds hardly anything (it ticked every other box, which is why I have it). I can put a large full box / bag behind my feet and a cold bag on the back though.

My neighbour uses his to get to the train station (our bus service is almost non-existent) and has been told it's OK to leave it in the bike shelter. His friend then meets him at the other end.

Not the best idea the weight of the battery would make your airline weight allowance disappear very quickly.

When we were in France a few weeks ago we saw an elderly lady cycling around a holiday town dressed for the beach and riding an electric tricycle.

Obviously, for many people there is no option to a buggy, but the big advantage of the electric bike over a buggy, is that there is plenty of space between the two back wheels for a large cargo basket.

We hope to be moving to the centre of a small town soon and I am eyeing one up because with the big carrying capacity i would be able to cycle to the supermarket, do the weekly shop and cycle home again - and the electric motor would bear the strain of the cycle home with a full cargo basket.

i saw a mobility scooter , a 3-wheeler, that was styled to look like a moped; very snazzy, attractive looking.

I don’t think they’re allowed any more, but an elderly French neighbour of Dbro and SiL had a funny little car for which you didn’t (then) need a driving licence. Dbro likened it to driving a sewing machine. I’m afraid he also used to refer to the woman as The Widow Twanky. They were on very good terms, though.

I have considered an electric tricycle - I have seen a few out & about. I can no longer use a bike (balance issues).
The problem (and I suspect for many people) is that the road I want to use it on the most is one of those narrowish country lanes that is nonetheless well used. It would hold up traffic for ages! We do have a reasonable path alongside that I can use the scooter on, but it ouldn't manage the trike.
They are very expensive of course, but we have 2 local places that hire them out.

Apparently they can go 6miles at 8mph on a full charge.
Think I will stick to a car for now.
I was having a chat with someone the other day, she was just getting into a very small, completely enclosed (bright red) mobility scooter thing. She absolutely loved it and it took her anywhere she wanted to go.
David they obviously travel first class and have lots of baggage allowance! Hope the batteries don’t burst into flames.

I'm not much of a technical whizz but I always thought cars ran better on their wheels rather than on their last legs

Witzend They are called 'sans permis' because they do not need aa licence on the car and i do not hink the drivers need to have passed a driving test.

They are to put it mildly, underpowered and after you have followed one up a long hill, travelling at under 10 mph, - and then bowling down the ther side. The desire to just drive right over it takes in credible will power to resist.

They are still legal, still on the roads and plenty of new models coming out.

Have you tried a car with wheels instead of legs 🤪

The "Christiana Bikes" in Denmark have the carrying basket/box at the front, I have seen some with builders supplies or even several toddlers. Great idea if you live somewhere flat. I expect they could have a motor added

I have an electricly powered cargo bike and love it.

I had stopped feeling safe on only two wheels, and as we didn't have a car, nor do I drive, a cargo bike was the obvious answer.

Admittedly, the autumn and winter weather can make shopping a rather damp experience, so consider buying some really good rainwear as well.

Our local disability shop sells mobility scooters that look like a Harley Davidson motor bike, with all the headlamps etc. I quite fancy one for when I give up driving, but they are several thousand pounds to buy new.

Milest0ne This is the point. This tricycledid have an electric motor that is why it appeals It was also quite specifically not one of those big cargo bikes with the huge cargo box up front.

Just an adult sized tricycle with an electric motor and a big enough basket between the rear wheels to take a weeks shoppibg for one or two people. The kind of front basket that comes with the standard disability buggy, can barely hold a handbag, let alone any shopping.
