What would you swear on? (Light hearted)

I was on jury service some years ago I hated every boring minute of it.

I hated it too.

In court I would affirm. There is no book I revere sufficiently to swear upon.

When I was a child of 10 I learned that honest people who tell the truth are not always believed. So often it is the clever liars who prosper in life.

Why do people swear on the bible ?

If in public, even if I drop something I swear in French in hope that people around would not understand!

Never heard of anything like swearing on a river. Sounds ridiculous, why couldn't he just affirm? Jurors all have the option of swearing on different religious 'books' or affirming.

In real life I would choose to afirm, but for this fun thread I would swear on my little portable computer. AKA my mobile phone!

I was called for jury service aged 72 , I enjoyed the experience and the formality. Was the first time ever in a court room! Fortunately it was not a harrowing case that may have involved children.

I read in the newspaper today that a juror swore by the river he lives on (in a houseboat) to do his best to uphold justice while serving on the jury. He explained that he asked himself what was most important to him and decided it was the river. Fair dos.

At age 72, I'm not going to be called for jury service but, hypothetically, I'm considering the magnificent trees that line the road on the approach to the village where I live. I marvel at them every time I return home. They are enormous, deep green and kind of brooding.

So, remembering not to take this too seriously, what would you swear by?

(My son asks what's wrong with just declaring that you will do your best to uphold truth, the law and justice? Maybe that's allowed...)

You can be called for jury service up to age 75. I was called when I was 74, luckily I didn't have to swear on anything though as I had recently broken my hip, and that along with other conditions meant I couldn't sit on a jury for any length of time, without having to have frequent breaks.

I don't call it swearing, I call it anglo-saxon. If I were ever called for jury service, there might be quite a lot of anglo-saxon about when I opened the letter.

I’d be happy to use the Bible, but my brother, a dedicated atheist, chose to affirm.

I’m now too old to be called for jury service, thank goodness. I dreaded the thought of it, and intended to refuse. They can’t make you. I’d willingly pay a fine.

I would affirm as well. In Scotland the upper age limit is 71. Thankfully I’m 72 next week!!

Swearing on a river is no more ridiculous than swearing on the King James book of fairy tales. I would swear on the Lord of the Rings, a book I truly love!☺️

In Court - the bible. Colleagues affirmed, Jewish colleagues used the Old Testament.
Lighthearted I’d swear on Crete, my favourite Greek island with its own proud history
Lighthearted - be an atheist/a humanist/a pagan/worshio Greek or Celtic gods, nature, the waves, anything you desire. Try not to dismiss other people’s genuine beliefs by referring to the King James book of fairy tales 🙏🏽

Well, I would like to swear on the monopoly board. My reasoning for this is a light hearted gesture that the legal system is more about game play than the actualtruth

I can't swear on the Bible as I'm Atheist but I swear on the Universe. I talk to the Universe every night.

I've never been in a court so do they have a Atheist non-Bible version in courts when swearing the truth?
