I read in the newspaper today that a juror swore by the river he lives on (in a houseboat) to do his best to uphold justice while serving on the jury. He explained that he asked himself what was most important to him and decided it was the river. Fair dos.
At age 72, I'm not going to be called for jury service but, hypothetically, I'm considering the magnificent trees that line the road on the approach to the village where I live. I marvel at them every time I return home. They are enormous, deep green and kind of brooding.
So, remembering not to take this too seriously, what would you swear by?
(My son asks what's wrong with just declaring that you will do your best to uphold truth, the law and justice? Maybe that's allowed...)
