Does any dislike this time of year.

My other half hates winter, as do many others, which is perfectly understandable, in fact he gets quite depressed which is why one of our daughters bought him a sun lamp thingummy. So, of course he loves summer.
But I am the polar opposite, I really dislike high summer, every year I dread it arriving, and am so relieved once in autumn. I really do get quite fed up with it. When we get good weather it is way too hot and humid and I get hot at the drop of a hat so it does make me feel dreadful, and heavy thundery weather triggers migraines. Also there are sweaty crowds everywhere, too many people on the roads and jostling each other on the streets.
Give me a crisp sunny November day and day, or a warm but not hot spring day anytime. I really don’t mind rain, cloud, or snow either.
Would think I was mad if it wasn’t for one of my daughters and friend feeling the exact same way.
Does anyone else feel an odd one out like this?

It’s said that as we get older, our body’s temperature regulating mechanism doesn’t work as efficiently as it used to, so extremes of temperature affects us more.

That’s definitely true for me, especially as far as heat is concerned.
I used to love the summer, but now I feel completely listless when the temperature reaches the mid twenties, especially if it’s coupled with high humidity.

Of course when weather forecasters mention expected high temperatures, they are talking about temperatures in the shade., so if we are forced to be out in direct strong sunshine, it’s a different matter.

Look what happened to poor Michael Moseley, who, very unwisely, set off on an arduous walk during a Greek heatwave.

It was definitely fresher here today in the south east, and a bit cloudier than of late, but I still the air con on in the car when we went out.

Happy birthday Grandmafrench

Summer is ok if it's our typical English summer, - cloudy, raining, with the odd bright day now and then. But when a heatwave arrives I really hate it and feel quite ill. It completely wipes me
out.

I must be really weird. Lived in Trinidad aged 12 and mum and dad bought aircon for their bedroom and took my two year old baby sister in with them. Apparently they couldn’t afford aircon for me but they did buy me a fan. After that we moved to Kuwait in an air conditioned flat However the kitchen lacked aircon and poor mum insisted on a cook to help her out.
Years later I lived in Kuwait with my Arab husband. It was 50 centigrade and I turned off the freezing cold aircon to enjoy fresh breezes from the windows.
42 years later he is enjoying the fan all night and I will have to say night and get under the winter quilt a,s,a.p

Sorry, meant to say we live in London.

Agree with Grandmafrench that each season has its merits - and anyway we can’t do much about the bits we don’t like except be certain that nothing will last for long. And as elderly and retired I can do as much or as little as I choose on the days which are too hot/too sticky/too wet/too windy/too anything.

Happy birthday, Grandmafrench.

Grandmabatty Sun 04-Aug-24 08:50:26

Grandmafrench I'm sorry I missed your birthday yesterday. I hope you had a lovely day.
I like the changing seasons and every season has its merits and demerits. High summer in Scotland often can be very wet and dull with high humidity too. The sunniest months here are often May, June and September, alas not this year. My favourite season has always been autumn. Cool, crisp mornings, leaves turning colour to burnished gold, and sunshine. Since I retired, I am much more aware of grey skies than when I was working and find constant clouds depressing

@JenniferEccles

I agree, since the menopause many moons ago now I can still get really hot and bothered, even in winter I only have a light duvet on my bed whereas my husband needs a winter duvet and blankets. For this reason we now sleep in different bedrooms because I just kick all the bedding off and he keeps putting it back on again.
So once the weather gets hot my body temp goes through the roof. In the past few days have been taking cool showers in the middle of the night as well as during the day, have tried fans but got a stiff neck/bad shoulder.
I think my body temp is wrecked.

I was going to post much the same.My Mum in her 80’s now really dislikes Summer and she used to love it years ago, and I’m getting the same way too.
I love the idea of Summer more than the real thing.
Spring is my best time of year followed by Autumn.

Shelflife Sun 04-Aug-24 11:37:26

Spring and Autumn are my favourite seasons. Stretching out in the sun 🌞 on the beach is my idea oh hell 🥵😈! Not to mention a waste of my time. I have always felt this way but recognize how others love the sun. My lifelong friend loves nothing more than turning her chair to face the sun while I am under a shady tree! Each to their own, I really enjoyed Autumn sunshine and the autumnal colours.

I am exacty like you ! When I was in my twenties i loved hot weather but now I can’t bare it and I too get more migraines caused by the heat and humidity .
It must be something about where our families stem from , my Mum was born and brought up in Kirkcudbright!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE summer it can never be too bright, too sunny, too warm, too dry, I get quite down when we have day after day of dull, dreary, grey, cold, wet weather which seems to be 95% of the year here
I obviously wasn’t meant for this country and climate My mum and dad got that wrong
Love summer Hate winter
🌞 🥶

I do too never, never too hot for me, I can rot in it as long as you like, do everything I can outdoors, ironing, vegetables just everything. I too should live in the Tropics. I am always cold, have little blood circulation so my extremities die off even in summer, yet my Thyroid medication is correct. How I dislike being cold.

Fflaurie Mon 05-Aug-24 12:41:37

I hate the Summer, I hate the humidity, heat, the insects, the hay fever and the noise. The high pitched whine of the strimmer, lawnmowers, DIY tools, the loud heavy bass of music and kids screaming. I love the Autumn, don't mind the Winter but Spring with all it's beautiful colours, buds, blossom fills me with sadness because I know that the Summer is round the corner.

chickkygran Mon 05-Aug-24 12:44:08

Absolutely! I dread the Summer months and feel a great sense of relief when September arrives (though I know it can still be hot), I cannot cope with hot weather at all. Makes me ill tbh. I’m lucky to be able to get to Scotland during the warmer months where it is generally a bit cooler.

fluttERBY123 Mon 05-Aug-24 13:05:22

My gran called these the dog days. Don't like the weather, can't wait to step outside one day and feel the cool that means autumn has come. Dog days has something to do with the star alignment, I believe.

Knittypamela Mon 05-Aug-24 14:21:24

I was speaking to someone who'd lived in Dubai for 11 years. She said she wore gloves to open her car door as otherwise she'd be burnt. It was 52 degrees inside her car! On days off they stayed indoors and watched Netflix. Now that's what I call hot weather!

LovesBach Mon 05-Aug-24 14:28:27

Today is just too hot - I keep telling myself it will soon be Autumn, and although reluctant to wish my life away, I dread June, July and August. Can't sleep. summer clothes don't suit me, love salads but do get fed up with them when it is too hot for anything else for days on end. Someone once wrote that they would love to follow Autumn around the world. Me too.

hollysteers Mon 05-Aug-24 15:01:19

I prefer the summer months, no central heating, no wrapping up with layers (I feel the cold). Generally brighter all round. Places look so much nicer when the sun shines and our summers are not long and unbearable as some countries have to suffer.
I don’t sunbathe these days though, enjoy the shade with my legs sticking out and a good book.

The poster upthread, can’t go back as I will lose this, who said her husband needs a duvet and she doesn’t, could still sleep in a double bed with him if he had his own single duvet and her a sheet or just Chanel No.5.

cc Mon 05-Aug-24 15:29:27

I really feel the heat too and much prefer Spring and Autumn.

Spencer2009 Mon 05-Aug-24 18:23:27

I always look forward to summer, long hot sunny days. But also like the Autumn for the lovely walks wrapped up against the cold and damp - then a lovely hot drink in a cafe.

BeneathTheHowlingStars Mon 05-Aug-24 19:54:13

I hate summer. I get terrible hayfever which is worse than normal this year and I hate the heat. I like cold foggy mornings.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 05-Aug-24 20:22:37

The dog days.

July-August. Usually the hottest most humid.

Sirius the Dog Star is shining - the brightest star in the sky.

I'm with you Babs03. Don't like high summer and don't feel or look good in summer clothes now that youth is no longer on my side.

watermeadow Sun 11-Aug-24 20:28:47

I love June but hate late summer. The grass is dead and nettles and brambles are rampant. It’s all prickles and stings from wasps and horse flies plus house flies in every window. The dogs always itch and scratch frantically through August.
It’s either far too hot or raining.
Roll on Autumn!

Margiknot Sun 11-Aug-24 20:46:58

I prefer the early promising warmth of spring- my favourite season. April to June are the best months as new life arrives in the gardens and countryside. I seem to struggle in both very hot and very cold weather!
