Help! going to Northumberland.

We had a lovely week in Northumberland in May, a couple of hot days but mostly pleasantly warm. I’d think anywhere in the UK needed a waterproof jacket “just in case”! Have a lovely time OP!

You can expect any sort of weather in Northumberland at any time of year, so layering is sensible. In April we had padded jackets on Bamburgh beach, but shirt sleeves on Hadrian’s Wall at Housteads Fort. In August one year, we needed fleeces all week, and in July the next year we didn’t wear a jacket all week. Whatever weather you get, it’s a truly beautiful, memorable place.

Years ago I had an autumn holiday in beautiful Northumberland. The weather seemed much like the weather anywhere in the UK at that time of year. Mostly warm, sunny days with the occasional cold, wet day. I wore jeans with various tops /cardigan or jumper depending on the temperature. I also took my usual waterproof jacket with a hood. We had wonderful holiday, with many happy memories. Enjoy your time in this lovely county.

If you’re by the sea keep looking out..the dolphins are very active at the moment and there have also been minke whales quite close to the beach. Whereabouts are you staying each night? I know the area round Holy Island quite well. I have a small rucksack that I take with me everywhere which contains a lightweight raincoat and binoculars.

I'm taking notes here too as I have finally booked our holiday(see "North of England" thread) for next month and I'm anticipating cold and wet. Like downtoearth I think it will be a different kind of cold to what I'm used to.

We shall be flying over so will be limited with what we can take, too. (No wellies)

Can you canny Northern Grannies give me an idea of what sort of weather to expect in September? Aran sweaters or bathing costumes for the beach?

It is beautiful, I live in county Durham which is lovely but Northumberland is prettier.

I'm envious. I love Northumberland. Lots of advice above but I would definitely take a good waterproof with a hood.

Thankyou more or less confirmed my thinking, Will leave wafty dresses at home, I am not a seasoned traveller, and the first time I have had a holiday for donkeys years so a bit apprehensive about what to take.

I have been told Northumberland is beautiful,I have read a series of books set all around the areas we are visiting so it will bring to life for me.

I live near Hadrian's Wall. We've had decent weather this past week. I even managed a Summer dress on Monday. The weather for the week ahead looks mixed, temperatures in the high teens but you can expect rain after Wednesday.
I would advise taking clothes you can layer, and a light raincoat.

Lucky you. I would definitely take layers. In 30 years I can count on one hand the number of hot, sunny days I've had up North and we go twice a year.

Last year we got excited because reports were all good for a nice warm week but we arrived in a surprise downpour that lasted all day and night. The next day was warmer but with northerly winds and it stayed that way all week.

I am in the Durham area, the last week or so has been really warm, there was some rain prior to that, but even when its rained its been warm.
Hadrians wall (depending which bit) can be a bit exposed so I would definitely have a jacket for that. Northumberland is lovely, hope you have a great time.

Take layers, so that you can be prepared for all eventualities, plus a lightweight waterproof jacket. The coastal areas tend to be cooler. I wouldn’t just pack thin, wafty dresses, nice as they are. Covered, comfortable shoes or trainers as well as sandals. We were there in May, and had a mix of coolish days and very warm days.

I’m not in Northumberland but a quick skim of the Good Morning thread might bring up some who are.
The other thing I would do is check the BBC website for the next week, it will give you temperatures, rain etc.
I used to travel regularly to the Scottish Borders when my parents were alive and only once ever wafted anywhere in thin dresses! Denims or chinos, long and short sleeved T shirts (can be layered) , maybe a lightweight fleece, definitely a waterproof jacket, trainers rather than strappy sandals , second pair of maybe lighter trousers, a light jumper and socks are what I would wear and pack. I see I keep saying “light” ie not winter woollies but think Spring and Autumn- of course you may be pleasantly surprised!

You should be fine in summer clothes as long as you have a cardigan or light jacket.
I bought a very light raincoat that rolls up small enough to go in my handbag and always carry a small folding umbrella.
I live close to Durham and we have been having temperatures of around 20 degrees and not a great deal of rain.

We are planning a trip to Northumberland. I will be layering, as I suspect it will be similar to Glasgow! 😁
