Memories from way back

I used to love 4711 eau de Cologne. I thought it was very exotic. I used to go down to the local shop and buy senior service cigarettes for my dad, gob stoppers that changed colours when you sucked them and sherbet with a licorice straw. I remember little blue bags they put in the washing to make it whiter- Dolly blue or something like that. My mum used to make me go down the road to buy paraffin for the little stove. It was so heavy, I remember I could scarcely carry it. I would have been about 6. I wouldn’t have let my own children do that. Tough times.

I love the smell of bleach now it takes me back to the swimming pool I went to as a child . Methylated spirit reminds me of my mum. She was a health visitor and must have used it for something .

i remember when i was 9-10 i bought a packet of cigarettes for my father from a vending machine.
i gave them to him as a gift.
he took them and very politely said, thank you, but i don't smoke.
i had just assumed that cigarettes were like sweets for adults, and that's what they'd like.
i think i chose rothmans as i supposed they were posh.

Cigarette smoke. I know that sounds gross but my old dad smoked 40 unfiltered a day, until the doc advised him to stop in his late forties, so whenever he hugged me as a child his clothes smelled of cigarette smoke.
I suppose our house reeked of it as well.
So now it brings back memories of him when I was a child. Never smoked myself though, considered it a bad habit, but in my old dads day it was a very different matter, apparently they put out containers of cigarettes in the middle of tables at dance halls, my old mum would smoke one to look cool. And my mum and dad met outside a dance hall in Manchester, he was smoking and she asked for a light, the rest is history.

I wish we were still able to use creosote on fences, the smell always took me back to my dad’s shed.

Does anyone remember the bottles with a wick that you pulled up -an early form of air freshener. Was it called Dispel?

I still use TCP, and would buy Germolene if I ever saw any! Where did any of you find it?

And not when I was a child, but in very early 20s, Brut! Seemed so flash then, but that was probably because the bloke I knew who invariably smelt of it was loaded. Well, compared to permanently skint students like me and dh, anyway.

Not that I’m ever likely to smell anything like it again, but my father’s pipe tobacco. Cope’s Escudo, in little tins that as children siblings and I sometimes managed to buy for him for Christmas.

Iwas stopped in Ayr town centre by a soldier in uniform who asked if he could give me a cuddle because I “smelled like his mum” It was Amarige and I gave him a hug,my OH couldn’t.t stop laughing ,said it was the best chat up line he,d heard for years.Amarige which I still wear is classed asa “vintage”perfume.Same as me

Odd fellows my late dad always had a bag of these in his coat pocket.Recently in a garden centre I could smell them as I walked in the door and wandered about trying to find them….alas it was a scented candle but the smell had me smiling to myself all day

Grannynannywanny, I also had to have a spoonful of Malt each day as a child and I loved the taste. I once made a Malt Loaf and it turned out ok, if I make it again though I think I would put more Malt in it!

Primrose53, that's a lovely story of a Tweed memory and yes I agree, it is evocative. I think it may still be available.

I recently took my granddaughter to Norfolk for a weeks beach holiday. I took some Johnsons talcum powder which is good for getting sand off feet. The smell took me back to my own children as babies, always used at bathtime, although now it’s a big no no to use.
My favourite smell that has special memories is Badedas which my Mum always used.

Nan always had Cussions Imperial Leather Soap, so evocotive reminds me of her every time.It’s sandalwood apparently.

I use Germolene (pink) all the time on my very frequent garden-induced scratches.

My father-in-law swore by Savlon.

We use it regularly too, scratches and insect bites, it’s really effective.
I also use Nivea, a good cheap skin cream.

I loved Virol and could have eaten the whole jar if allowed
We used to toast the bread on toasting forks when I was at my Nans use to get red mottled legs from sitting too close to the fire I used to hold a double page newspaper across half the fire to ‘draw it’ when we were starting the fire ( health and safety wow)
Used to help nan brasso all the brass items in her house

I loved the old coal fires though my old mum slaved over it and was never happier than when she got a gas fire.
The smell of toast slightly burning as we made toast over the fire on the end of the big brass fork we had next to the fireplace.
Generously buttered and eaten for supper.
Yum!
Toast never tasted so good.

Walking home from School on a cold winters afternoon with the smell of coal fires burning, knowing soon I would be indoors getting warm in front of a lovely glowing fire. After playing around a friends house Sunday morning, on my way home, I could smell everybody's Sunday roast cooking.

I loved the malt extract. My Mum gave us a large spoonful every day. It was in a jar with the brand name Virol.

I remember the thick concentrated free orange juice distributed at the Nhs baby clinics in the 50s and 60s . Probably tooth decay inducing but it did taste lovely. Goodness knows what was included in the list of ingredients.
