Memories from way back

Did you buy the white or pink one TillyTrotter?
It was only recently that I discovered there were two different ones when buying it for a friend, and she commented on the colour.

Newly mown grass is my most evocative fragrance.
‘Helping’ my dad mow the lawn by standing in front of the mower between his arms and helping him to push.
It must have been really awkward poor man!

TCP was the go-to in our home. It was used for sore throats (gargling) , swabbing cuts and grazes and insect bites.

Nivea skin cream reminds me of my maternal grandma. I hadn't used it for years but when I was working in Thailand I ran out of moisturiser and that was the only one I could find that I recognised so I bought some and immediately thought of my grandma when I opened it.

Tar when the roads were being resurfaced.

I use Germolene (pink) all the time on my very frequent garden-induced scratches.

My father-in-law swore by Savlon.

The smell of grated nutmeg.

I am taken back to Mum making egg custards. When I was small I wasn’t keen on pastry, so she made me a special one in an old cup, just the egg custard, no pastry.

Spoiled or what!

Still love my own egg custards, but I eat the pastry now.

TCP and germolene in our house. And my old nan would take a bottle of lavender water on trips in case we felt car sick, every time I smell it now it evokes memories of her but also car sickness 😳
Also the smell of the ubiquitous chip pan heating up.

The cream of the top of milk in school I can still remember the smell I loved the milk at school with a biscuit.

My dad’s greenhouse the smell of the tomato vines was absolutely gorgeous and I loved it.

My best memory is when running home from junior school I could smell Scouse my mum often made. She cooked the meat and veg on the stove with a little gravy powder made a pie crust (to make it more filling). Mum would then put it in a large baking dish and bake it off in the oven. It was absolutely heaven I still make mine the same way.

The best smell was the Sunday fruit pies my mum would bake with gooseberries and blackcurrants from our garden.

My Dad swore by TCP and long after he died you could still smell it in the under sink cupboard. The other smells I associate with him are putty as he worked as a painter/decorator and linseed oil when he oiled my hockey stick.

My Mum always loved lavender. She grew it, harvested it, made lavender bags for everyone and had little bowls of it everywhere. Her favourite scent was Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers as she grew those too and I kept a bottle after she died.

Calomine lotion, measles and chicken pox I think?

Chlorine in swimming pools seemed to smell stronger then, maybe my imagination playing tricks.
Warm hazy smell of summer, including mown grass. At school milk, which we had to drink, still hate it to this day. Yuk!

A great evocative thread by the way, I'm sure reading other posts will trigger more nostalgic memories.

No-one has mentioned Vick which was rubbed on my chest every winter. A very distinctive smell!

My Mum's 'Tweed' perfume, her home-made scones and apple pies. I also loved the pink Gibbs toothpaste in a tin, (the nearest to it now I find is Euthymol pink toothpaste in a tube). The lead on newly sharpened school pencils.

p.s. Yes Chestnut, I do also remember Vick ! :-)

....... and the Vick would be put on my chest before my vest and liberty bodice!!

Vosene shampoo. Nowadays T-Gel shampoo smells similar.

Ooh yes Calomine lotion. I’ll never forget the measles aged about 6..just horrible but the chicken pox the year before had been a walk in the park with comics, jigsaws in Mums bed, plus the saviour original Lucozade.

Calomine was in a brown glass bottle right? .. but so was Kaolin sediment. Took a swig once (as an adult) ..yep it was calomine 😝

TCP in our house too, so many uses.
Camphorated oil to rub on my chest when I had bronchitis
Syrup of Figs for whatever ailed you.

Imperial Leather soap. I used to sit in the bath and stick the label that came off the soap onto the tiles. Had a whole row of them before I had to take them off!

Also English Rose talc/soap always reminds me of my lovely Mum

Old Spice aftershave. My dad wore it and when he got very elderly I managed to find some at £World.
