I cannot understand the mentality of those people , mostly men , causing so much damage in England at the moment. We are all shocked at the murders in Southport but why are they damaging and even looting shops ? This mentality of keeping England for the English is not found in Wales or Scotland but it is found in nothern Ireland . I see them waving flags of Saint George and rioting in so many cities. If the killer of these childen had been say French would they feel the same ? I am sure colour comes into it . I saw someone orchestrating the youths to cause havoc what are their parents thinking they are up to . I must admit I dispair of the mentality of these people .

Shall we stop English bashing? Many Scots and Welsh have no love for England and the English, ditto many Irish, it works both ways.
Well balanced people from anywhere in the British Isles got past that long ago thankfully.

Yes, you are right, sensible suggestion.

I’m not saying that it isn’t a problem… it worries me too… but I live in Leicester and was shocked to see reports on TV to say we had had trouble too ( although without major violence I think). What wasn’t reported at all was that about half a mile away people of all colours and nationalities were rubbing along peacefully together on the park. I know because I was on the park at the time.

What I’m trying to say is that the peaceful rubbing along is MUCH more typically English, and the protests and violence are the only bits that get attention.

Where were you 2 Summers ago? There was major fighting and disruption between Hindus and Muslims in Leicester.
We lived in Leics and still have relatives there and they said it was dreadful.

Well thank goodness the issues have been resolved and as ali23 people largely live peacefully together.

You almost sound as if you regret this.

Don’t try to put words into my mouth.

There has always been an underlying tension in Leicester and Asians and West Indians have never mixed. There have also always been no go areas.

Just because people can share one of Leicester’s many parks does not mean the problem has been resolved.

The tension in 2022 wasn't between "Asians" and West Indians. It was between Hindus (mainly of Indian via Uganda/Kenya) origin and Muslims (mainly of Pakistani origin).

Sadly the far right have become emboldened by becoming mainstream politically after Brexit, and though the Tories have now gone Reform have representation in the HoC.
Is mainly in England because, just as Brexit was mainly voted for by the English, there is a history of colonisation by England and some still think that white Indigenous English people are way superior to anyone else and that those nasty Johnny foreigners need to be dealt with by the boot.
Am ashamed to call myself English when I see it.

I absolutely agree!

Sorry, but it is the Britons (Welsh, Cornish) who are the indigenous peoples of these British Isles, pushed to the further most regions by invaders, the Angles, Saxons and Jutes.

I think Babs was being ironic.

Yes, I realise that part of it was of course.

But white Indigenous English people
Is a misnomer.

We are nearly all Bitzers.

I guess large parts of the population had no worry with legal immigration but the illegal immigration has lit the touch paper. The Government must act

Oh, I think there is a huge issue for certain groups with legal migration. Some people are even prejudiced against the Welsh, Scots and particularly the Irish, never mind people from countries further afield. Some people live in very small worlds.

Check out news footage from all over the world. It is prevalent in all countries where it is permissible at one time or another. In countries where it is not, there is usually a dictatorship.

This.

You live in France? If so am not sure why you are surprised as the French enjoy a riot at the drop of a hat.
There have been riots here on and off about all sorts of things, the poll tax riots, the miners and Tottenham riots to mention but a few.
There’s always a reason even if it’s an underlying one. This time it’s about immigration.

Any riot is dreadful if you are caught up in it, that goes without saying. Unfortunately they are a fact of life, all over the world, and for a multitude of reasons. We’ve had plenty in the UK, both this century and previously.
What’s really different this time is the external interference through social media, and that is something the government must put resources into. If I were them I’d be thinking about counter measures, and as well as identifying and dealing very swiftly with content, using influencers to spread alternative messages and emphasise the scale of punishments - I think we have to counter like with like.

Or simply thick?

mae13, I have to call you out on your unpleasant post.
There has been an unspoken protocol on GN for as long as I have been on, that we do not criticise individual posters regarding their spelling or grammar.

We never know if a poster is dyslexic or has difficulties.

Or a person whose first language is not English.

And then there are all the jobs people from other countries do because not enough British willing to do them‘

Like the Filipino emergency nurses in Sunderland whose taxis were attacked as they travelled to work.

That's just dreadful.

Those stupid, ignorant, racist thugs!!

The Filipino nurses were the kindest and loveliest when I was recently in hospital.
Not saying the other nurses weren't very good and efficient but the Filipino ones were very gentle as well as efficient.

England is more crowded with people than Scotland, perhaps ? Though that doesn’t quite fit because Ireland has unrest, too and it isn’t crowded like parts of England. It was good seeing
Catholics and Protestants arm in arm for once, I must admit.

There is a lot of racial hate in the UK, the vote for Reform proved that, don’t blame Farage it was there long before he came onto the scene. It’s not at all uncommon to heard pointed comments on race, don’t think it’s just men, women are just as bad.

We had the opposite reaction when the police kicked a black man in Manchester, at least it didn’t end in a riot then, if he had been seriously hurt it would have done.

I’m sorry to disagree but Farage has got a lot to answer for! This whole immigration issue was blown way way out of proportion during Brexit, the media perpetuated it and the Tories used migration to divert attention from some of their failings.

Farage even called the recent election “the immigration election”

Sadly when people like him blame immigration for an entire countries woes and failures it seems to legitimise racism.

You can more or less always guess anything I post is in todays guardian or the bbc.

This is in the Guardian.

You might like to read this article by Dame Sarah Khan that looks at the issue.

I'd very much like to read it, but where will I find it?
Is it a recent article?

A wee clue or two would help me to find it 😆
