Have you got a personalised number plate and do you wish you hadn’t?

I was given one for my 50th birthday by my mother who was influenced by my sister who was sure I would like one.
I was a bit cross because it was something I’ve never craved. It is a very ordinary one and now I’m in my 70ties I’m not too bothered about it proclaiming how old I am but…..
We are changing the car soon so today I had to pay £80 to the DVLA and £38 for new (old no,) plates so we can sell the old one🤬. Not for the first time.
It’s just the gift that keeps on giving!!!
Mum is still going strong at 95 but perhaps this is the last time I will have to do it.

I've got one which I bought myself about 25 years ago. No I don't wish I didn't have it. It's personal to me and it makes me smile and it's easy to remember. If I didn't like it I'd remove it from the car or sell it along with the car.

I inherited mine from DH and keep it in memory of him. It’s been transferred to my current car. If I give up driving, I shall sell it to a number plate dealer before the car is sold. It’s now worth more than DH paid for it according to the quotes I’ve had.

No, I wouldn't. I used to have a very distinctive vehicle and got fed up with people saying 'oh, I saw you were at the Retail park yesterday, or at the doctors this morning, or the swimming baths' etc. No harm meant, I know, but I found it very irritating.

DH has one by accident on his car. It’s not his personal info, but one of our DCs. When we change the car we might pass the reg on.

Mollygo Tue 06-Aug-24 18:13:04

My sister has one and she loves it. I have other things to do with my money.
The nearest we’ve ever come to having one was when on the car we were buying, the last 3 letters were the initials of DH’s first name, my first name and our surname.
I was quite sad to lose it, when we replaced the car years later.

I bought mine 15 years ago but only put it on a new car 10 years ago. It’s my maiden surname and every time my Dad sees it, he smiles…🤗. And my brothers never spotted it coming up either, which puts a smile on my face 😇

I’ve worked out that my current surname will come up in 9 years time and will buy a new car then to put it on, possibly selling the current plate, unless Dad sees his telegram from the King!

My friend had one which she inherited from her father in law. He bought it and the mini attached to it for £450. She was offered £50,000 for it a few years ago. I'd have sold it!

Visgir1 Tue 06-Aug-24 18:45:41

I have had one for about 20 years, so does DH he's had his about 30 years we also bought one for DD 21st birthday.
We don't find it difficult adding to new cars. All you need to do is keep the original plates that the car was issued with when you sell it, as thats what will be what DVLA will re issued. You keep your plates on a retainer.
Ours are very personal to us, we only did this for DH new car last month.

I’m laughing at these remarks. I do have one with my name on it I inherited it from my husband who had it on his car! It doesn’t bother me but I laughed at marthjolly1im a nursery teacher and on a Monday I get ooh you were at aldi on Saturday and M&S spending your money! Hilarious goid job I wasn’t up to no good!😂😂

I have had mine over twenty years it’s my initials from my DH it’s a bit different from other plates being personalised. I don’t see a problem with it really it was a nice gesture my DH also has his private plate.

Never seen the point of them and would certainly never pay to have one.
But then I probably spend money on some things that others would deem pointless.

Oldbat1 Tue 06-Aug-24 19:10:03

Pointless expenditure. I would rather donate the money to a worthwhile charity. More money than sense as my dad used to say.

I have one and had a different one in the past. I ditched the original one when i changed name. The current one is my old dogs name. Neither were especially expensive and I have no regrets about them.

Sago Tue 06-Aug-24 20:24:08

Yes we each have a private plate, it’s so easy when using car park machines, booking into hotels etc, I could never remember my number plates.

As regards being spotted out and about,as I have nothing to hide it’s not a problem!

Mine was a gift for my 50th birthday from the family, a surprise but very welcome. DGD will inherit it one day, we share the same initials. DS1 will fall heir to DH'S, they share the same first name.

Urmstongran Tue 06-Aug-24 20:46:14

I think they are known as ‘vanity plates’ in the US. Each to their own really.

Marydoll Tue 06-Aug-24 20:55:24

I have had one for about twenty years. It is my initials, month and year of birth. It was an indulgence, but it is my money to do what I like with.

It was my yellow car, which got me spotted more than my reg. I was supposed to be recuperating from a serious OP and decided to sneak out, when DH was golfing.
When he got home, he asked where I had gone at 10a.m. He and his golfing partner watched me from the golf course, coming out of the drive.

dogsmother Tue 06-Aug-24 21:17:45

We do, a matching pair, it’s a thing here. They are as has been alluded to above, an investment. So why not.

Georgesgran Tue 06-Aug-24 21:19:25

Yes and no.
We’ve all got them, I’ve had mine 30+ years, then DH bought them for himself and the DDs about 20 years ago. Just initials and easily moved from one vehicle to another, although we don’t change them very often.
However, after DH died, I did just sell his vehicle with the plate.

As said upthread - our money, our choice.

Whiff Tue 06-Aug-24 21:45:20

My husband had one which apart from a pair of brass cufflinks was the only thing his dad left him. In my husband's will it was left to out children. Neither wanted it on their cars so I sold it to a site that gave me cash sum which was less than what it was valued at but had no fees to pay and money in my account in 3 days and each child had £6,000.

PamelaJ1 Wed 07-Aug-24 06:48:59

dogsmother can’t think that mine is an investment, sadly it’s not a very interesting one.
If it was I’d be happy to have one. Mine just costs me money.

M0nica Wed 07-Aug-24 07:02:50

We run really old cars - almost vintage in a marque no longer manufactured. We have a personalised nunber plate, because DH thinks the marque is more iportanat than how old it is.

It is not a highly distingtive one, just a letter and numbe that are irrelevant and DH's initials.

David49 Wed 07-Aug-24 07:18:29

I have vanity plates on my cars as do lots of others, it’s common enough, they are both cheapies, others have plates valued at £100k+.

It’s no different to wearing jewelry, designer clothes or tattoos, we do it because it makes us feel good.

MissInterpreted Wed 07-Aug-24 07:45:29

I don't have a problem with them at all - my son has one, which was a birthday present from his partner. If that's what people want to spend their money on, why not? It's their choice. I did have a 'dream' number plate in mind - it was my full first name and second name initial, and I did actually once see it on a car, a top-of-the-range Range Rover. I confess I was slightly envious.
