Have you got a personalised number plate and do you wish you hadn’t?

I was given one for my 50th birthday by my mother who was influenced by my sister who was sure I would like one.
I was a bit cross because it was something I’ve never craved. It is a very ordinary one and now I’m in my 70ties I’m not too bothered about it proclaiming how old I am but…..
We are changing the car soon so today I had to pay £80 to the DVLA and £38 for new (old no,) plates so we can sell the old one🤬. Not for the first time.
It’s just the gift that keeps on giving!!!
Mum is still going strong at 95 but perhaps this is the last time I will have to do it.

Ooh I touched a nerve there, sackcloth and ashes was sarcasm, are we all supposed to like the same minimalist choices. Many of us dress to impress, make up, jewlery, hair dresser, clothes that get noticed, nice house, it’s all vanity.

You all do it, I hope, I do it as well, my reply was an answer to Purple Pixie calling “Vanity Plates” vulgar - common, like them or loathe them they are not common

When people write posts containing total nonsense, of course it is irritating. It ruins good discussions.

David I am confused, were you trying to be ironic/ facetious/ amusing in your response to PurplePixie?
It did not come across that way.

So if the letters go by the size of the city or town in Germany, how come Hanover is H, yet Hamburg, being 3 times the size, is HH?

Hamburg, along with Rostock, Bremen and some other coastal ports, are proud members of the Hanseatic League and all have added the H to their registration numbers: HH, HR, HB. It's a fascinating subject. The Hanse is still a thing, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was an association of trading ports, similar, I imagine, to the Cinq Ports in Southern England.

We have had a personal plate for 25 years I bought it for my husbands 50th birthday, but it is not a name or initials, it is a sport that majority would not think about but one that my husband and I have represented Great Britain at so it means something to us personally and is easy to remember.

I’m saying that private plates are no different to any other adornment we choose to have, you may like or hate them but many choose to have them.

Thank you.
What I took from your post was that all the adornments, along with private plates and red hair are vulgar.

Cars mean little to me, apart from making life easier, so a personal plate would be wasted on me. If it has wheels and works, I’m happy.
My DD however, is a car person, loves her car, really looks after it and has a personalised plate with her initials.

I haven’t mentioned that I read somewhere they are considered Non-U or common (Nicky Haslam, tongue in cheek?).
I’m happy if she’s happy and it’s of no import.

Years ago I knew a lady who had BRA38. This moved to every car that she bought.

No. I just think they are so vulgar. Look at me syndrome!

Yes Pixie it it “look at me”.
In exactly the same way cosmetic surgery, pumped up lips boob jobs, tattoos, red hair, extreme dress, extreme behavior, jewelry, designer clothes, is a statement of individuality.

Many of the above I would term vulgar and they would cost a lot more than personal plates.

I take umbrage at red hair being linked with the other "statements of individuality". Red heads get a lot of stick these days, especially children. At least we don't go grey - I'm fading gently to a pale strawberry blonde without any artifice.

At 69, I still have my red hair, no longer carrot, but multiple shades of Titian.
People think I have paid a fortune to get it like that. A bottle of dye has never touched it. 😉

It defines me! It is a statement my individuality. 🤣

My comment about red hair was not aimed at natural redheads but the dyed bright red, sky blue pink colours, if that isn’t “look at me” what is !.
