It’s 42 degrees inside my patio doors!

Just that really.

I have a small barometer hanging inside my west facing patio doors. It’s dangling in a shady bit but I had one of the doors open a little and that’s the reading at 3.30.

On goes the air con.

Keep safe in the heat everyone.

Bring on the thunderstorms.

My brother has air con in his houses.

We have an Daikin air con/heater unit in our family room.

How many houses does he have?

Babs03 soak your sheet in cold water, wring it out and sleep under it. Repeat as necessary. Or soak it, wring it out and freeze it for a while before bed. Or use a large towel instead as it stays wet and cold longer.

Half fill a hot water bottle with cold water and freeze that and take it to bed with you.

Thanx will give it a go tonight.
👍

@Norah Certainly showering cold helps but sadly not for long 🥵

^I don't know a single person...family, friend or colleague who has air con^

I only know one person who has, and that's because he runs some sort of IT company at home so has air con because of the heat from the PCs in the Summer. Other than that I've never come across air con in a private house outside of America.

In France systems that cool in the summer and warm in the winter are common. They do have units outside adjacent to a wall which are quite noisy. But that is not important because if we need the aircon on we are indoors with the doors closed and so don't hear the fan similarly in winter the doors are also closed.

No problems indoors as we are lucky to be able to leave the porch and front door open all day ( they are still open) this together with byfolds at the back nearly creates a lovely mild breeze.

We managed 40 in Françe, the house was thick old stone and stayed cool, we have a chiller unit here that keeps one room ok.

Does anybody have any hints on how to sleep in this hot humid weather, window is open but not a breath of cool air, only have a sheet and tend to kick it off, can't use a fan as already stipulated it gives me a stiff neck or shoulders, have bought Kalms nighttime out of desperation but it isn't working.
Ever since the menopause many moons ago my body temp is raised, even in the depths of winter I can't wear thick jumpers but just a tee shirt with a thin cardi.
Is a horrible way to be when the temps are this high, I literally sweat every night and have sometimes had to have a shower in the middle of the night.

Run a tepid bath, about 6 inches of water. Once you are in it, turn the hot tap off and ;et the bath gradually fill up, while gently getting colder. Once you can submerge yourself turn the tap of and lie in the cold bath until you are really shivering. this will take about half an hour, by that time your body core will have cooled right down.

Get out of the bath, air dry yourslef and then get nto bed under a cotton or linen sheet. You should stay cool for up to 5 hours. DD swears by this at bed time. I haven't done it recently enough to remember.

Me neither, only in Australia (rarely visit America) and there many of the units are inverters which heat rooms in winter as well.

I know someone who had a freestanding aircon unit but not a proper system.

It was cooler and breezy this morning here, very warm and breezy this afternoon but not as hot as I expected.

Those who can't bear a fan directly at them could try placing it in the doorway. It gently circulates the air. I've a couple of floor standing fans although I don't suppose we'll need them many more nights.

The only person in the UK with aircon that I know has to have a window open for a large hose outlet. This would be impossible for me due to the large number of bats flying around at night, not to mention the spiders and moths. Prefer the stiff neck from the upright Dyson.

Here in NE Scotland 16deg. On weather maps, we are usually almost the coolest place in Britain. Shetland is sometimes slightly cooler. I’m envious of the warmer temperatures in (most) other parts of Britain.

We get 42 outside in Summer but usually only for a few days. Not pleasant, is it?

cc Tue 13-Aug-24 12:03:45

I have an outside thermostat hanging in the shade on the SE side under a large awning, it's been in the mid-30's for a few days recently. I shut the doors and windows and put down the awning before my living room can get too hot in the morning, then use my portable air-conditioner to keep it bearable. I turn on the one in my bedroom on the SW side in the late afternoon, I honestly don't know how I would manage without this for the few very hot days in the summer.
Like others I do open the windows once it is cooler, but that can be quite late. I can only leave them open until the planes start at 4.30 - we're under one of the Heathrow flight paths.
Biting flies are a real menace as we're by the river, but they're mainly on the living room side, not the bedroom.

I am amazed that no one seems to realise that having the Aircon on contributes to climate change and will make things worse in the long run.

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 13-Aug-24 12:30:15

I don't envy the performers and the Morris dancers taking part in the local Folk Festival... glad that we have medical aid on standby!

Pattie47 Tue 13-Aug-24 12:33:27

Cold water into a hot water bottle? They say if your feet are cold the rest of you will be? Cool shower before bed helps I find. If you have blinds/curtains keep them closed in the day & close windows once the temp outside is hotter than inside. Then in the evening when the team drops open the windows as they do in hotter countries.

missdeke Tue 13-Aug-24 12:37:57

I haven't got air com and even when I've lived abroad where it's installed I don't use it, it's far to drying and makes me cough. The sun is on my bedroom all day so I keep the windows closed and the curtains closed and that keeps it nice and cool. If it cools in the evening then I open the windows and curtains and tit makes it nice and fresh for bedtime.

But the same goes for flying. I only use aircon perhaps 2 weeks a year and this certainly contributes far, far less to climate change than long-haul flights or cruises, neither of which I do.

It really isn’t that great, I stay indoors mostly because is too hot and humidity is high. I love walking but can’t do it in this weather, at your temps I’d be out walking all the time.

If the sun on one side of our bungalow, keep blackout or insulated blinds and curtains closed until sun moves off and then open windows . Keep as many windows and doors open in rooms not in sun to allow through draught. Use fans only when absolutely boiling for short time only and keep face and feet cool by immersing in or washing down in cool water. Take lots of fluids and don't drink hot drinks.

To anyone who can't cope with the heat I would advise thinking about taking supplements, just in case you are lacking in something. After being a sun-worshipper all my life, a person who became more energetic, not less, in the heat, things gradually changed, and in the very hot spell two years ago I was wilting. Now I take Vit C, Vit D, B, B12, Krill oil, and multimineral. And turmeric, but not continuously. I don't know which one did the trick, but I'm fine again now, although I still do not enjoy it like I used to. Anyway, never mind, only two weeks and it will be September!
