It’s 42 degrees inside my patio doors!

Just that really.

I have a small barometer hanging inside my west facing patio doors. It’s dangling in a shady bit but I had one of the doors open a little and that’s the reading at 3.30.

On goes the air con.

Keep safe in the heat everyone.

Bring on the thunderstorms.

Air con is on - all is well.

It's 33 outside, a bit too warm, imo.

Georgesgran Mon 12-Aug-24 16:00:29

Only 26 in Durham. Breezy and overcast.

Babs03 Mon 12-Aug-24 16:06:11

31/32 in Reading, humidity high.
Is like walking through soup.

35 in Surrey. Staying inside today. A few days like this has me feeling most unwell.

Babs03 Mon 12-Aug-24 16:07:05

Would love to use air con or a fan but every time I do I get a stiff neck and shoulders.
So am just casseroling atm.

It is going to start getting cooler and am sure that those of us who don't like the heat will appreciate it.

M0nica Mon 12-Aug-24 17:12:27

39 on the outside thermometer, 27 in the south facing family room. Somewhat less in our north facing study where we are both working this afternoon

The family room would be hotter but, although the big french windows are open we have pale green vertical blinds in there, which have been drawn all day with the slats open but slanted so that the sun does not shine through them although we can see out.

I'm quite astonished people will put the heat up during colder times (if they can well afford) won't put the air con on during hot times as it costs the same to heat as to cool. Or so says the engineer, perhaps he is wrong?

I had a fleece on when I took the dog out.

I’ve had a pleasant day pottering and sitting in the garden reading. About 30C max here, according to the Met Office, which suits me fine, and we had a brief storm at lunchtime which reduced the humidity nicely.

I don't know a single person...family, friend or colleague who has air con

I don't know many who don't - but we all prefer homes closed to the dust of the fields this time of year. Easily accomplished with air con.

I only know one person who has, and that's because he runs some sort of IT company at home so has air con because of the heat from the PCs in the Summer. Other than that I've never come across air con in a private house outside of America.

Georgesgran Mon 12-Aug-24 20:33:50

Just seen off DD2 and DGS2 - decidedly chilly - we’ve had fleeces on sitting outside after 7.30.

Out of curiosity Norah where are you? I also don’t know anyone with domestic air con.

M0nica Mon 12-Aug-24 20:34:29

No, never come across anyone with air condtioning. ispent part of my childhood in the Far East when air conditioning was soething only found in hotels. We kept cool by having windows open both sides of the house, staying in the shade and having electric fans.

Yet to have weather in the UK that required air condtioning.

East Anglia in the fens. The harvest dirt can be heavy in the skies some days. Precisely why the engineer fitted air cons.

Does anybody have any hints on how to sleep in this hot humid weather, window is open but not a breath of cool air, only have a sheet and tend to kick it off, can't use a fan as already stipulated it gives me a stiff neck or shoulders, have bought Kalms nighttime out of desperation but it isn't working.
Ever since the menopause many moons ago my body temp is raised, even in the depths of winter I can't wear thick jumpers but just a tee shirt with a thin cardi.
Is a horrible way to be when the temps are this high, I literally sweat every night and have sometimes had to have a shower in the middle of the night.

My family not unique.

Reasonable, efficient, work well.

Well most of the time we wouldn't need air con but it would certainly come in handy overnight some times as the bedrooms get a bit hot, so I'm quite envious Norah.

I've already opened the bedroom windows now that the temperatures have dropped but that just means lots of bugs 🪰🕷🦟

Cheap as chips, easy, portable, efficient and no bugs or dust.

Babs03 soak your sheet in cold water, wring it out and sleep under it. Repeat as necessary. Or soak it, wring it out and freeze it for a while before bed. Or use a large towel instead as it stays wet and cold longer.

Half fill a hot water bottle with cold water and freeze that and take it to bed with you.

Marydoll Mon 12-Aug-24 20:57:30

16°c here in Glasgow. No need for air con. wink

I know no-one, who has air con.

Shower cold, that chills one down for a bit
