How to break with hairdresser?

I have been with the same hairdresser for over thirty years. She used to come to my home and permed, (yes those were the days, my friends, ), and set my hair twice a year then cut and set it every six weeks. I wasn't bad at dealing with my hair then.f Now I am a ancient and widowed she comes to my flat and sets my hair for £15. I wash my own hair and comb it out. While my hair is drying she tidies my kitchen, does my floors, and cleans my bathroom. She is so good I insisted on paying her during lockdown as she is self-employed. We are good friends obviously and, although she is not the best cutter, she knows my hair which isn't a bad thickness and is still mainly its original mouse!

After Covid (during which time I grew my colour out) I decided that I liked my white hair and I did not fell comfortable sitting at a backwash basin with someone breathing over my face. I spoke to my hairdresser about it and now I was my hair before going to the salon so that she just sprays my hair from a normal spray bottle with water and then she cuts it and blows it dry. I pay 25.00 and have it done once a month but if she is on holiday sometimes it will stretch to six weeks. I am very happy with this arrangement.

I pay £45 forcut and blow dry every 6 - 8 weeks. Hairdresser does a good job but I'm thinking of opting for a home hairdresser charging £20.00. Friend has been using her for about 6 months and her hair looks good.

When the hairdressers closed down the lady I’d often had to cut mine started out on her own. She comes to the house - around every 5 weeks - just to cut it (dry). She recently increased the price to £15. Very pleasant and enjoys a chat so I’m well satisfied.

I pay £40 every 4 weeks for cut and blow dry. I used to pay double for colour as well… but since going grey it’s cheaper!!!

Be honest with hairdresser. It was my hairdresser's suggestion to change from a full "cut and blow dry" to a wet cut in order to reduce costs. Admittedly my hair is short and very fine so dries and scrunches back into shape very quickly with a towel dry.

I’d be honest I wouldn’t be making excuses I’d be upfront as I always am. Tell her the truth you cannot afford her prices . You have been a regular client of hers for many years. You never know she could do it a bit cheaper for you. I wouldn’t say I’ve been a regular client of hers for many years as she knows that already. I don’t really think the fact she’s friendly with your son and wife has any bearings on it. Her prices are too high for you now. Good luck and hope she gives you a discount for your loyal service 27 years is very long time to stay with same hairdresser.

The beauty industry keeps trying to get men interested in expensive primping, with little success so far! You can be just as strong!

I pay £17 every six weeks for a wet cut, plus he blow drys it, and finishes with hairspray.

Changed hairdressers a year ago….not because I didn’t like her cut but because her home salon was in the next town and it was about a 20 minute drive away. Hadn’t quite made up my mind to make the change but by chance met a woman at a friend’s home who had a super haircut, so I asked who cut her hair and she told me who she went to, and that salon happened to be 5 minutes away from my house! Tried her and never looked back. Cut and blow dry costs me about £100 but the cut lasts for at least 6 maybe 7 weeks, and I justify the expense by knowing that I saved on petrol!

I go to the same lady who has done my hair the last 24 years. To her house.

About every 8-9 weeks, wash, cut, blow dry. No longer have any colour on, I like the silvery grey colour that my hair now is. Just a simple bob.

Bargain. Looks great when she does it, not so good just me, but I go swimming several times a week so my hair usually looks a bit unkempt most of the time.

Just tell her the reason, and maybe another style that doesn't need cutting so often. She'll appreciate your honesty and hopefully you'll come to a suitable arrangement.

Its a funny old thing the hair industry. My mother had exactly the same look all her life. Grey short, curly. And I do mean all her long life.

My hair was thick and dark and is now a blondish, styled nicely. But it comes at a cost I can no longer sustain. So loathed to go down the grey and short and cheaper route.
First world problems I suppose.

I have the cheapest of the lot - it's free!! Out with the dog grooming scissors (the sharpest in the house). Sit on kitchen chair, and OH lops off an inch or two!! I have never done hair colour in my life. Okay, my hair is poker straight but the same dark brown colour that it was when I was a teenager, although somewhat thinner (in mid seventies). I don't think that I have seen a proper hairdresser since the late eighties! I am not sure that I have the patience now.

Since Covid I haven't gone near a hairdresser. Clippers and the colour nature provided. Break free of the Hairdo Tax!

She doesn't see the hairdresser every week. She determined how much it cost her over a year, and divided it by 52 to work out how much per week it is costing her.

Totally agree with others, be honest and also tell your son. It's a tricky situation, I moved on from my mobile hairdresser who had been coming to me for some years, as she wasn't really doing what I wanted. I left a phone message for her saying I had decided to go back into the salon for a change, and hoped she understood.

Can you not perhaps tell the hairdresser that you need to economise and just extend the time between appointments?

I went to am amazing hairdresser but after she set up her own business ( one woman band) it became almost impossible to book appointments. She is expensive but worth I 🤔. Most of her clients are much younger than me and also SAHM's with a lot of time on their hands whereas I work ft and needed to fit appointments around that. Finally she only wanted me to message her on Instagram🥹 which I rarely use and would take weeks to reply to text messages. I just gave up in the end! Don't feel bad about telling her you can't afford it as she may offer you an older person's discount!

£89 for trim and colour on roots - no blow dry. Has been going up gradually since Covid. I go on average every 7 weeks - gets expensive. I hate sitting there waiting for colour to take but I’m afraid I don’t want grey hair - we are all different. Take ear plugs as I can’t tolerate inane chatter being shouted over hair dryers. I’m perfecting the art of grumpiness.

So, same problem with my nail lady,already it's more expensive than others,and she is putting it up again after her 3 wks holiday.I really like her,but should I pay more because of this ??🙄It's a gel manicure ever 4 weeks now 😁

I only started having my nails done about 10 years ago, I go to a lovely Vietnamese family who also do amazing pedicures and as I don’t smoke, drink much and rarely wear make up, that and my hair are my guilty pleasures and treats to myself!

I would simply be honest!

I have fairly long hair and have it cut about once a year - dry cut , OAP 10% reduction but probably pay a bit more for good hair brush and shampoos . Average cost per week about £1.50 . It’s the shorter hair fox that seem to be expensive . Have to cut my own fringe quite a bit tho and that can look haphazard at times.
