How to break with hairdresser?

I have had my hair cut by the same girl for the last 27 years. She is excellent, and has always charged a little more than other hairdressers, which, while my husband and I had our business, was absolutely fine. However, my husband passed four years ago, and although I am not pleading poverty, I cannot warrant paying her fee. She has just put it up again, and I’ve worked it out that over a year i would be paying about £11.50 per week! The awkward thing is that she is best friends with my son and his wife….. Any suggestions how I can tell her in a polite friendly way that I am not going to her any more? Many thanks

I would tell her the truth. You have been a loyal customer for a long time. She will want to know and will be pleased you are changing for purely financial reasons. She may even offer to do your hair in her spare time for a lower price. Definitely tell her the truth.

I think you should be honest with her and explain your situation. As you have been such a loyal customer, and the fact that she is a friend of your son and his wife, she may offer a compromise. You could go less frequently, or just have a wet cut, rather than a cut & blow dry? I hope it works out for you.

Lovetopaint037 crossed. 😊

I agree.. just tell her that you really appreciate her as a hairdresser but the cost is no longer possible now that your circumstances have changed.. of course she won't be offended.. she must know you very well by now..

Do you go to her or her come to you? If I was you I would just compromise and don’t get it cut as regular she might ask why then you can tell her your just trying to economise.

I told my hairdresser that when she decided to back to working in a salon, rather than coming to my home, I wouldn’t be going to her anymore. She was lovely about it, said she totally understood my reason and thanked me for my custom. It was absolutely fine. Good luck, I’m sure it will be for you too.

I have the opposite problem…I think my hairdresser is trying to break up with me 😭

JudyBloom Mon 12-Aug-24 16:49:17

I would tend to be honest about it and as you have known for some time, I imagine she would understand.

I was an absolute coward and just disappeared to another hairdresser after covid. I feel a bit bad about that so possibly be braver than I was.

JaneJudge

I have the opposite problem…I think my hairdresser is trying to break up with me 😭

Are you nicking the hair care products to 'use later'smile

JaneJudge Mon 12-Aug-24 16:53:50

😂😂
If she asks me if I want a drink, I have five sherries and outstay my welcome 😉

JaneJudge Mon 12-Aug-24 16:54:49

In all seriousness, I think she wants to retire

I’m sure your hair dresser will be fine OP but I do understand your predicament

I changed last year as my hairdresser put her prices up again I simply told her I couldn’t afford it any more and went to another who was £20 cheaper and cut it better
Be honest

Bea65 Mon 12-Aug-24 17:40:51

OP - £11:50 for ?wash&blowdry.Wow this is cheap- . I buy a course of 6 which averages out @£18:30. .. I don’t go every week but more every 10/11days - this is my only luxury and love the salon - very chatty team and friendly to everyone 👌

BlueBelle Mon 12-Aug-24 17:47:40

EllaMary worked out that it came to £11.50 a week it doesn’t mean she has it cut every week Bea if she has it cut monthly which most people do then she’s paying £46 a hair cut

Fleurpepper Mon 12-Aug-24 17:48:11

So, how much do people pay for a cut and blowdry these days?

JaneJudge Mon 12-Aug-24 17:50:13

I have a cut, colour and finish for £90

JaneJudge Mon 12-Aug-24 17:50:43

Every 12 weeks I suppose
I’m not sure how much that works out to a week.

JaneJudge Mon 12-Aug-24 17:51:24

£6.92 apparently

Fleurpepper Mon 12-Aug-24 17:52:29

Nottalking about colour JaneJudge- just cut and blow. Colour is always expensive (and how glad I am I have accepted my salt and pepper look).

Over 20 years ago a local hairdresser was charging me the same amount .
I wasn't even thrilled with her efforts .
It was far too expensive and I stopped booking appointments .
Your situation is difficult as you've gone to the same one for so many years and she's best friends with your family .
I'd take a deep breath and tell her .

DancingDuck Mon 12-Aug-24 17:57:04

As others have already said, just be honest and say that you need to switch since your circumstances have changed, they will appreciate the honesty and then it doesn't give cause for any issues with your family members.

BlueBelle Mon 12-Aug-24 18:08:22

Cut and blow dry £18 and I have it done every 5 weeks
She cuts it exactly as I like it been going about a year and very very satisfied

winterwhite Mon 12-Aug-24 18:11:22

I'd let your son know at the same time.
