Very sorry to read this. 4 years ago I had to cope with a death on NYE. So its not a good time.

'Nice' isn't the most poetic or original word but in this context it's a gentle way of starting a conversation that the respondent can elaborate on. Or not. Sometimes we can disappear up our own a**e overthinking the meaning of words - I know I can be guilty of that!

You can always ask them if he place they visited was interesting or special in any way or why they chose the destination they did

We have just spent 5 days in the Peak District. It is school holidays, the roads were crowded and also many of the attractions and someone might well ask why we chose to go there then - as we did ourselves once or twice, but we went there to attend the GIlbert and Sullivan Festival and that is held in the first fortnight of August.

The Gilbert and Sullivan festival is most definitely my idea of ‘nice’!

For me somewhere nice would be far too many places we have visited and loved.
I admit is a strange way of framing the question, I suppose is really just a turn of phrase. I find it more annoying when people ask if I have had a good Christmas, it just adds to the general expectation forced down our throats by numerous ads on the telly etc,, that we have to have a good Christmas with lots of jolly times and an army of family and friends. For anyone alone or going through a tough time this is not a good time of year.

Someone asked me this question once and you should have seen their face when I said I had been to Iran (1990s). They thought I was joking.

My idea of "nice" places are European cities. Countries like Syria, Iran, Lebanon, Nepal, Morocco etc are interesting but not "nice".

Terazin...... not Terrain

A beach holiday would be my nightmare. Bored out of my head.
Best ever were Prague, Belgium and Malta. So much history and atmosphere. While in Prague we visited Terrain Concentration Camp 30 miles North of the city and that memory will be with me for ever.

When I go on holiday, I like to visit places of historical interest or geographical interest. I don’t go on beach holidays .

We weren’t allowed to use the word nice in any of our work at my senior school.

I saw an advertisement for a hair salon that said ‘ We wont ask you if you went anywhere nice for your holidays, or if you are doing anything nice tonight?’

Back to the question! A great holiday destination for me has to have beautiful architecture and fabulous restaurants.

Anywhere that does not require me to go to a hot country with nothing to do except lie on a beach and swim in the pool.

I want a holiday that enables me to do things I enjoy and visit places that attract me.

Last week we went to Buxton to the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and visited some places and houses on our way there, back, and during the time we were there.

I was left wishing that the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival happened other than in the school summer holidays.

Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, and NYC.
