'Nice' isn't the most poetic or original word but in this context it's a gentle way of starting a conversation that the respondent can elaborate on. Or not. Sometimes we can disappear up our own a**e overthinking the meaning of words - I know I can be guilty of that!
You can always ask them if he place they visited was interesting or special in any way or why they chose the destination they did
We have just spent 5 days in the Peak District. It is school holidays, the roads were crowded and also many of the attractions and someone might well ask why we chose to go there then - as we did ourselves once or twice, but we went there to attend the GIlbert and Sullivan Festival and that is held in the first fortnight of August.
