Bully Cats

I’ve just read an article about Bully Cats. I’ll put my hand up and say I’m not overly fond of cats, but these cats, I found frightening. The article suggested the breeding of these cats was approaching a fad atm. Breeding which shouldn’t be happening due to serious health problems and shortened life expectancies. It’s been happening with certain breeds of dogs as well, but these cats….words fail.

Utterly horrific….

It's another fad, sick people who want to have something scary and different. Looks like a Halloween monster. Anyone who would get an animal that is bred to suffer from health issues is no animal lover.

I like cats (never owned one mind you) but there are horrid looking creatures. I just did a quick read as I had never heard of them. It seems that the poor creatures are subject to all manner of health problems due to their hairlessness and stunted features. Just another designer fad.

Here's the full article, but be warned, that cat is a scary sight.

These cats really are scary Chestnut glad I’m not the only one! They’ve got an alien look, hard to describe, gave me the creeps. Not the poor cats fault, the breeders have got it so wrong with this animal I feel.

rafichagran Thu 15-Aug-24 01:09:52

Poor things, they look horrific.

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 15-Aug-24 07:25:55

I've had cats for most of my adult life - all hairy standard moggies.
I found that they bullied me effectively anyway re food choices, letting them in, letting them out etc etc

We have no right to treat animals like products, to be redesigned and tweaked, is despicable. All living things should be treated with respect and recognised as important a species as we are.
Quite frankly I sometimes think that if human beings became extinct they would be doing this planet and all other living things a favour.

EkwaNimitee Thu 15-Aug-24 07:50:13

I agree Babs.
I could have written your last sentence!

MissInterpreted Thu 15-Aug-24 07:58:48

Totally agree. This is horrific. We just need to look at the problems caused by 'designer' dogs to see how awful this is. Animals are not something to be treated as some kind of novelty or fashion accessory.

Iam64 Thu 15-Aug-24 08:58:16

I’m another agreeing with Babs.
These creatures look like something out of science fiction, or one of those fantasy programmes on tv. No doubt that’s why they’ve been bred. Rescues are full of dogs that look like wolves, bred after Game of Thrones, or so I’m told.

MissI is correct, animals should not be treated as a novelty. Or fashion accessory.

I like cats and all of mine have been bullies , but they were beautiful .
Two of them used to wait until one of my poor dogs would walk past and jump on her back, digging their claws in as she frantically run around trying to shake them off !
These new cats are really scary looking .
I don't want one .
But I have no doubt that they are going to be the latest craze .

XL Bully Cats, my posterior! They are Sphinx cats bred to look more ferocious is all.

Sphinx cats are normally of a gentle nature. They are delicate and require more care and attention due to their lack of dense fur. They are not bully cats at all. Maybe they are of an acquired taste, but I think they are beautiful, too.

Those bred to look more muscular and mean are not so good looking - the breeders are not doing the breed a favour if this is how they are being promoted, and if they are exacerbating health issues, they should be banned.

I think the media is just creating a myth re them being nasty or bullying cats, though.

Tiley Thu 15-Aug-24 09:25:46

This makes me so cross. It should be made illegal for breeders to do this but at the same time who are the idiots who are buying them. Certainly not animal lovers

Absolutely agree...how many breeds of dogs have sadly been 'redesigned' and suffered horrendous health issues?

Breeders are blamed quite rightly but lets be honest, if people didn't buy them, would it continue?angry

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 09:28:01

I don't think we need any more manufactured varieties of animals.

I find it despicable to breed, deliberately, animals which are "delicate" (delicats, maybe?)

Smileless2012 Thu 15-Aug-24 09:32:31

I kept Sphynx cats for years, until I lost my last one a couple of years ago.

Not everyone's cup of tea but I agree Cabowich, but they are beautiful with their large ears and delicate features. Being hairless they do require more care and attention but in my experience their hairlessness has no impact on their longevity. My eldest was 15 when he died.

I don't like the look of these XL Bully Cats and can believe that their short bowed legs are a cruel and unnecessary feature, after all cats are jumpers and climbers. I can also see that the grossly exaggerated wrinkled skin would cause problems if great care and attention wasn't paid to keeping them clean.

Sphynx's for me are beautiful and it's a shame that the breed is being manipulated in this way.

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 09:36:15

Shynxes are being bred with other, more wild breeds, too, aren't they?

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 09:43:12

Oh bum.
Spelt wrong.

Smileless2012 Thu 15-Aug-24 09:55:18

They're often bred with the Devon Rex which have a very short and tight coat.

Originally called the Canadian Hairless, the first was born in Toronto in 1966 and was hairless due to a naturally occurring genetic mutation. The mutant gene was isolated and as a result more were bred.

Their large ears and delicately featured faces led to them being compared to the Egyptian Sphinx, hence the change in the name.

Having no hair their skins are thicker. They do require regular bathing as the oil they secrete isn't absorbed by fur and their wrinkles most commonly on their faces and legs, need to be kept clean to prevent sores.

A breed that requires a lot of care but well worth the effort as they love people and are particularly loving and affectionate.

Spuddy Thu 15-Aug-24 09:55:30

Hubby and I have always loved and had cats and always will, we have a gorgeous tabby at the moment, and I love the Sphynx but those poor sweet innocent Bully cats. If I had the opportunity and funds I'd happily adopt those babes, then I'd bang up the breeders in chains in the ground and let them rot.

Absolutely horrific for the cats, dogs and other ''designer'' animals.

Spuddy Thu 15-Aug-24 09:56:34

Absolutely agreed with you 100%

henetha Thu 15-Aug-24 10:21:06

Good grief. Don't do this to cats! Cats are beautiful!

Chestnut Thu 15-Aug-24 10:47:12

Those poor animals will need extra care and attention, and protection from the sun too. But the kind of vile specimens who buy them will not look after them properly. I hope they are banned immediately before this gets out of hand.
