I know some of you especially further north have had a disappointing summer, but for me, this evening is affording the first glimpse of Autumn. And I’m loving it!
Darker, drizzling (don’t need to water the pots-yay!) and so much more comfortable.
Cup of coffee instead of iced water and light on to read my book by.
I know summer isn’t over, we are due some nice days , but we are moving into what I feel much more comfortable in.

Agree totally.
Still too warm in my neck of the woods but temps have dropped a bit and today was cloudy and windy.
Autumn is my time, schools are back, places are quieter/calmer and we can go on our long rambles again, which haven’t been possible in the recent heatwave.

Spring is my absolute fav season, followed by Autumn.

kittylester Thu 15-Aug-24 20:33:38

Loving having to draw the curtains. But also sitting in the garden.

Siope Thu 15-Aug-24 20:33:55

Miserable as sin here. We’ve had virtually no summer and it’s raining again. I hate it.

flappergirl Thu 15-Aug-24 20:35:50

Sorry but whilst I appreciate each season for it's beauty and merits, I've never understood why the British are always so heartily glad to bid farewell to summer.

I could understand it more if summers in the UK were wall to wall sizzling heat from May to September, with parched earth and other attendant problems. But, apart from notable dates like 1976 (50 years ago!) the temperature barely nudges 20 degrees for a few weeks at best. The rest of the time it rains, blows a gale and is overshadowed by grey skies.

I know I and many other gransnetters had their heating on in the evenings well into June this year and last year too.

Thinking about it, perhaps that's why the British hate the summer so much. It's just so bloody depressing.

Woke up this morning and a warm yellow Autumn sunshine was shining on the trees where the green of the leaves had a yellow tinge. There are primroses out in the front garden.

I am not a summer person. Autumn makes my heart sing.

I think it’s the variety I appreciate.
The first summer of the pandemic was glorious - but went on and on, and I think it was two years ago (?) I would wake up, look outside and think “oh, sunny again
So it’s the changing of the seasons and the weather that makes me appreciate them
(If it’s still raining the day after tomorrow I may well be the first one to moan!)

maddyone Thu 15-Aug-24 21:26:23

I’m with you flappergirl.
I love summer.

NanKate Thu 15-Aug-24 21:28:36

I dread the thought of the dark nights. ☹️

Doodledog Thu 15-Aug-24 21:33:37

I like summer too. I love Autumn, but not when it sneaks in in August. I prefer it when we've had a warm summer, and Autumn builds on that, letting it fade away slowly, and easing us gently into the winter.

It's raining where I am (on holiday in the Lake District) and more like a November evening than an August one. It's dark and chilly, and not remotely summery.

Siope Thu 15-Aug-24 21:42:29

I’m hoping for a long Indian summer.

Ziplok Thu 15-Aug-24 21:45:50

The nights are pulling in rapidly, and the summer has been poor this year here, overall. I’m not looking forward to the cold, wet, windy, dark days ahead, and there will be plenty of them. We’ve not been able to sit out in the garden as much as past years this summer, sadly.
I suppose we’re never happy really, as I would hate a repeat of 2 years ago when temperatures were reaching the high 30’s day after day, fields were catching fire, houses too, and plants and grass were shrivelling. A happy medium would be nice really, but we don’t seem to get that any more.

merlotgran Thu 15-Aug-24 21:51:55

I love autumn but hate winter and long for the end of January when the evenings get noticeably lighter and there’s only one more month to go before spring.

I’ve tried to like winter but its only redeeming feature is it’s a good excuse to read lots of books and watch Netflix.

GrannyIvy Thu 15-Aug-24 21:54:04

I love summer and warm (hot) days. Here in East Anglia we have had a good spell of warmth which has been lovely. It took a long time to arrive this year! I hate Autumn arriving and winter and long for an Indian summer in September. Weather here looking good for weekend and into next week and I’m happy with that.

Norah Thu 15-Aug-24 21:54:32

It was hot today, but rained a bit - not particularly nice,

Norah Thu 15-Aug-24 21:56:23

--- not particularly nice, but January will arrive soon enough!

We in the North have barely had a day without rain. A few here and there. I bought a new summer dress and haven't had an opportunity to wear it.
Yes, I like Autumn but prefer it following some nice summer sunshine. Temperature today peaked at 17c. I recall we had a few days at 22c.

Primrose53 Thu 15-Aug-24 22:01:47

We have had 2 lovely hot weeks here inNorth Norfolk. Got up to 34c. Slight drizzle this evening which is much needed. Evenings definitely drawing in.

Greyduster Thu 15-Aug-24 22:05:11

Had a long walk in the woods this morning and leaves were starting to come down off the trees. I think both autumn and winter will come early this year.

Lovemylife Thu 15-Aug-24 22:11:59

Lovely and warm in N Suffolk. Enjoying being out in the garden, especially with a glass of something cold and white 😋

Chaser Thu 15-Aug-24 22:12:54

Another Northerner here and the rain has almost been constant this summer. The cushions for our outdoor furniture have been outside for the grand total of five days. So very disappointing that the short dark days seem to be just around the corner
Oh and I saw selection boxes in B and M yesterday 🌲

Skydancer Thu 15-Aug-24 22:22:40

I am starting to feel depressed even thinking about the winter. It’s the dark nights that are the worst of it. I love gardening and being outside not by the fire with the curtains drawn. Can’t bear to think about it.

HettyBetty Thu 15-Aug-24 22:22:57

I have been curled up on the sofa with a book all evening and went to fetch a blanket for my feet as they were chilly. It certainly felt a bit autumnal.

I'm just waiting for the garden to have its autumn season, we have a lot of autumn perennials so I look forward to those.

I noticed that one of the charity shops in town has put the Christmas card spinner out 😢😁

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 22:36:07

It was beautiful here this evening.

A cool breeze, and nice enough to sit out for a while.

Supposedly it was 24 degrees, but it was comfortable, and felt cooler. smile
