I know some of you especially further north have had a disappointing summer, but for me, this evening is affording the first glimpse of Autumn. And I’m loving it!
Darker, drizzling (don’t need to water the pots-yay!) and so much more comfortable.
Cup of coffee instead of iced water and light on to read my book by.
I know summer isn’t over, we are due some nice days , but we are moving into what I feel much more comfortable in.

We live in a similar area to Visgirl and merlotgran, blue skies right now, a high of 24/25 today, we’ll be sat outside our local with friends later, it’s still summer.

The gardening calender tells us that it is early autumn.

The school calender tells us it is summer

The warmth tells us that it is still summer.

Sirius in the night sky tells us autumn and winter are upon us.

So I think it is still summer but on the cusp of autumn.

If we get as much rain this autumn/winter I shall be very cheesed off!

Please it’s still August and officially Summer- why are some talking about the Autumn… wishing life away..smile

Certainly not wishing my life away, just expressing my opinion of the season I love the most!

Babs03

For me autumn creeps from the end of August and starts beginning of Sept.
I love the colour of the trees, the misty mornings, the hush that descends after the clamour of high summer, long rambles through the countryside, collecting blackberries for a pie that usually get eaten before we get home. Wet dogs and muddy boots, a pub lunch with a fire in the grate.
Haven’t been able to ramble at all these past few weeks, too hot, too crowded.

More a fond memory than a reality.
Our last dog died four years ago. At our ages we have no intention of getting another which is sad because they always made our rambles so much more fun 🤩

M0nica Fri 16-Aug-24 10:10:25

Babs03 I am at one with you - except for the dog!

Is it Autumn? I thought we were still in summertime even in the north.
People who prefer to have heating in, no where to dry their clothes, darkness most of the day, having to put coats and boots on to go out, cold feet and a cold nose in bed, 'flu, Covid, etc- you must all be crazy!

I don't get as depressed as I used to at this time of year because I don't have to go back to work but come on... let's feel the sun shine on our wrinkly skins for just a few more weeks please!!!

Babs03 Fri 16-Aug-24 09:41:59

Cooler temps here today, had rain early hours, the lawn really needed it. For the first time in ages I put on a cardi when going out in the garden. I know has been a north/south divide and so people up north probs think how ungrateful I am to say thank God the sun isn’t out today. But humidity has been stifling and I haven’t slept for ages, or gone out when it was too hot. Atm I feel comfortable, hopefully no more cold showers in the night.

merlotgran Fri 16-Aug-24 09:35:37

I live a five minute drive from the Solent, Visgirl and agree about the (mostly) mild winters. DD has a sign hanging in her kitchen proclaiming, ‘Every day’s a Beach Day!’

Well, I wouldn’t quite go that far. 😂

Millie22 Fri 16-Aug-24 09:02:49

Bluebelle
I agree with you.

What a poor summer we are having. Very few days of sunshine and yesterday the rain was back again.

Visgir1 Fri 16-Aug-24 08:02:56

I'm glad I live in the South not far inland from the Solent, it never really gets that cold.
I'm definitely a Summer person, love it.
Shorts and flip flops come out end of April sadly put away sometime in October.
Love our Summer time in the garden, which becomes our ever changing sitting room.
It's the Rain that drives me mad, I think Winter has been replaced with the Rainy season.

M0nica Fri 16-Aug-24 07:34:40

It is the endless cloud that has really got me down this ast year. It seemed to start last October and regardless of the weather, summer or winter, wet or dry the endless pall of cloud across the sky day after day has really flattened me.

Bridie22 Fri 16-Aug-24 06:57:47

Don't know were " afternoon" came from !!!

Bridie22 Fri 16-Aug-24 06:57:07

The few days of actual warmth and sunshine have been precious this year afternoon having a summer also last year, the cols and greyness have caused depression in some cases.
The days are sadly drawing in, but I for one will stand in the sunny corner as long as its here 🌻

cornergran Fri 16-Aug-24 06:56:58

Totally agree bluebelle, long, light days, a bright, sunny sky and warm if not hot weather make me smile. I’ve also noticed leaves beginning to fall, not yet, please.

fiorentina51 Fri 16-Aug-24 06:55:44

I saw my first hint of Autumn this morning when I opened my kitchen blind.
In the valley below me runs the river Severn. Mist was rising off the river and undulating as it followed the flow. Brilliant sunshine and blue skies too. A sure sign Autumn is on its way.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 16-Aug-24 06:20:13

What I would love is to have actual seasons again.
What has been so depressing this year is the sudden changes. Or days of wet, windy and cold when it should be warm and dry and days of scorching heat (scorching my plants and their flower heads) when a sunny warm day is what I want.

It's looking lovely out there now so I shall go and open the kitchen french windows and sit on the back step with coffee and hope to do this for many more days.

Grandmadinosaur Fri 16-Aug-24 05:56:19

I’m with you there Bluebelle
Although I struggle on the muggy days of summer I love the carefree feeling of summer days. Light clothing mostly dresses, sandals no bulky coats, lighter, easier meals, longer days bring it on.
I live in the north and the weather was awful but coinciding with the start of the school holidays it’s been brilliant.

BlueBelle Fri 16-Aug-24 04:44:38

OMG it’s summer and hopefully a late summer will take us through a few more weeks into the depressing thoughts of winter which we ve only just left
The thoughts of winter makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry
Why can’t the cold people let us have a few weeks of warmth without the awful awful complaints and the desire to send us back into the darkness and sadness of winter
It’s going to come, just like death will come, but why do we have to be poked and prodded into thinking about and wishing it on us
You already get about 10/12 months of miserable dark cold months why oh why do we have to think about cold and dark when we are getting just a few measly days of warmth

Bea65 Fri 16-Aug-24 01:29:38

Shinamae Thu 15-Aug-24 22:40:40

Winter can’t come soon enough for me. I absolutely love it…

Catterygirl Thu 15-Aug-24 22:37:45

I don’t feel warm at all and it’s August.

MissAdventure Thu 15-Aug-24 22:36:07

It was beautiful here this evening.

A cool breeze, and nice enough to sit out for a while.

Supposedly it was 24 degrees, but it was comfortable, and felt cooler. smile

HettyBetty Thu 15-Aug-24 22:22:57

I have been curled up on the sofa with a book all evening and went to fetch a blanket for my feet as they were chilly. It certainly felt a bit autumnal.

I'm just waiting for the garden to have its autumn season, we have a lot of autumn perennials so I look forward to those.

I noticed that one of the charity shops in town has put the Christmas card spinner out 😢😁
