I found this in my emails from Boots today.
Surprise... Advent Calendars have arrived!

Then on FB I learned that there’s only 13 Mondays before Christmas.

Don’t you eat them Norah when having a chocolatey moment?😄

No.

I handed them to my husband to keep in his office. You know that space from where he "manages and directs" grin

Please don’t mention this now; we’ve not had our summer holiday yet! 😂

Jackiest

Maybe they should do year long advent calendars with 365 windows and a bar of chocolate in every one.

Best idea yet!

I received the first charity 🎄catalogue over a week ago. Can’t say it bothers me - except for mince pies in the shops in September!!

I’m not surprised about mince pies being displayed long before Cmas. Hot cross buns are in supermarkets all year round.

I was looking at Christmas lights yesterday. I haven't even been on our summer holiday yet

Ktsmum Mon 19-Aug-24 11:44:56

What a fab idea, I'd buy that, might be a bit large though😅

mabon1 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:06:34

No, but you are a real show-off, nobody cares and why would they be interested?

JaneJudge Mon 19-Aug-24 12:14:29

it's a discussion forum grin

I'm thinking of advent early this year as I'm busy making a nativity scene for my GC which I intend to give as an advent gift packed in a set of advent calender boxes which previously had toiletries in. I need to complete it to give in early October for them to have it for advent. As usual these projects always take more time than I hope but I'm enjoying the process.

I’m afraid Christmas washes over me nowadays. I’m not a practising Christian and the rest of it is just commercialism and an excuse to over eat and binge drink. I prefer the Pagan idea of celebrating the shortest day and looking forward to the Spring.
I do like a mince pie though! 😋

I HATE these adverts constantly rushing us ahead and it definitely doesnt make me buy anything - quite the opposite! I do understand that some people need or want to begin very early, but really !! Do we need to have adverts for christmas when the school holidays are not even over?? They are only doing it for commercial reasons, but we do not have to play their game if we dont want to !! I think it is such a shame that the excitement and anticipation of the seasons is now lost. I still want to look forward to scrunching through the leaves and bonfire night etc etc before christmas arrives. Unless you have to send something early abroad or whatever lets all enjoy what is lovely to look at now and in the next couple of weeks and let the future take care of itself!!

Mabon1 What on earth are you on about?? Who is showing off? I looked back through the posts and no-one rattled my cage like they clearly have yours. Do lighten up!

DP tries to manage and direct whichever room he’s in, not that I take any notice.
Before last Christmas I put away the few presents I bought for friends and work mates which included a good sized Toblerone in each present. Well, I am ashamed to admit that by the second week in December they had all been eaten.blush

Surely there are more interesting topics to discuss than Christmas.
For heaven’s sake, it’s only August.

MayBee70 Mon 19-Aug-24 16:06:57

Can’t have too much of Christmas. Or chocolate….

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 19-Aug-24 16:16:25

Oh Oreo - what madness, buying Toblerone and expecting it to make it through to Christmas- present- wrapping- day!
Did you have to buy more? Much, much nearer to December 25th?

Oreo Mon 19-Aug-24 16:22:40

I did indeed, fortunately the pound shop had a load of them.
My mistake was not wrapping the pressies up, but even if I had I just may have torn them open to get at the choc, like a mouse.

grandtanteJE65 Mon 19-Aug-24 16:25:53

For years I started planning Christmas in September, finding out if only my parents were coming to us, or my aunt and or sister and her children as well.

I had very little to live on, so presents were usually sewn, embroider etc. so obviously I started early in the autumn.

Most people are paid monthly now, so shops have to have Christmas wares in stock practically as soon as the school summer holidays are finished.

If this annoys you, stay away from the shops that already have Christmas goods on display.

All my life, I have detested being in the last minute for anything and having to rush around - my mother was an exponent of the art - we were always running around trying desperately to finish the last tasks before visitors arrived. I swore I would never been like that, and I have kept the promise I made my twelve year old self.

4allweknow Mon 19-Aug-24 16:27:11

Yes, they're in shops now. Halloween all over the place too.

Fleurpepper Mon 19-Aug-24 16:33:09

I love that season- but it starts with Advent and early December. Will be spending it in UK with daughters and GCs- with a few days in Rutland first and then 1 week in Cotswolds.

But NO, I don't need it now. Hate this nonsense!

RillaofIngleside Mon 19-Aug-24 16:54:47

I agree that it's a pity children don't seem to enjoy pictures any more, we used to look forward to opening our calendars. Chocolate doesn't seem the same to me.
I will start picking up cards soon, but nothing else yet.

It’s really difficult to find nice advent calendars these days. I find it sad that children don’t seem to enjoy just looking at pictures since they started putting chocolate in them.I’ve got a box full of advent calendars from before chocolate ones took over that are all glittery and Christmassy. Chocolate ones are a nightmare if you have a dog.

I found some that had little books in every niche, not the most exciting I've ever seen but at least it was different.

MayBee70 Mon 19-Aug-24 17:18:44

That sounds lovely. My nice ones tend to be from Germany.
