Hurricane Ernesto!

Well storm Lilian left us without electricity from 7 am to 10.30 pm, so not much fun, really.

Pascal30…cover all eventualities…no need to go mad with endless clothes etc. I go nowhere without my waterproof jacket/coat. Happy holiday 🌺

No, I don't enjoy storms, as I cannot help but fear damage to the house, trees blowing down etc.

And this last storm had thunder and lightning as well as gale force winds. Horrible!

Love it and sometimes hate the wind.
Last year a heavy glass panel off the sunroom roof was flung from the south side over the sunroom and deposited on my car roof!
We live on an exposed hill with only fields surrounding so experience all types of weather. Gardening is a challenge.
Often find my ‘smalls’ in the nearby fields
Love the isolation and as the OH says, You’re in the country now, never underestimate the force of nature.
Wouldnt swap it for the city.

We moved to Norfolk from Orkney and were waiting for a bus to take me to work and the children to school. None came at the allotted time; then a colleague stopped and offered us a lift.....The date was 16/10/1987: "The great storm of 1987 was a violent extratropical cyclone that occurred on the night of 15–16 October, with hurricane-force winds causing casualties in the United Kingdom, France, and the Channel Islands as a severe depression in the Bay of Biscay moved northeast. Among the most damaged areas were Greater London, Kent, the East Anglian coast, the Home Counties, the west of Brittany, and the Cotentin Peninsula of Normandy, all of which weathered gusts typically with a return period of 1 in 200 years.[4][5]". To us, it was just like a normal winter's day in Orkney!!

I will investigate Thank you. I am dreading winter if it snows. When it melts it just runs down the walls.
My friend is encouraging me to apply for a bungalow or a flat. I don't know what to. I'm settled here but am aware it's not good.

I don’t know where you are in the UK QuaintIrene, but you could contact Care and Repair, who may be able to help you with roof repairs? I live in Wales, and Care & Repair Cymru is a Welsh charity helping older people to live independently through repairs, adaptations and home maintenance - I think there is an English equivalent.

It's great if you don't have a leaky roof. I don't have the means to repair it.

It's been a bit windier than normal but the rain isn't hitting us until tonight. It was quite sunny today but expecting the rain after midnight then all morning tomorrow. We could do with some rain, haven't seen any for a few months. More warm weather to follow in a week or so apparently.

22C here, not unpleasant breeze, blue skies and puffy clouds!

It has calmed down here now but as it was bin collection day there were several bins over including mine and my neighbours.
Stuff all over the road and in gardens.
I had a heavy planter and a sundial blown over.
The sun dial is broken.
However that is nothing to local traffic disruption with fallen trees and debris on the roads.
The metro in Manchester is not operating,or wasn’t earlier on.

I would enjoy it were I not to bee travelling on a cross channel ferry tomorrow fromPortsmouth - Caen. A 5 hour plus journey.

I hope it doesn’t reach West Wales, as we are all off for the weekend to a Cottage there….

I remember that too, Grandmabatty. It was indeed January 1968, and it was the remains of a hurricane which went further north than usual while still powerful, and did an unexpected jink up the Clyde when it was expected to head up the west coast. 20 people died across central Scotland, 9 in Glasgow. I remember the noise, and the pavement being covered in slates and rubble on the way to school the next day. There were tarpaulins on the roof of quite a lot of buildings for ages after it.

I remember the storm in Scotland of 1968, I think it was. People in Glasgow died. Mum was terrified as dad was away on a course. We hid under the table and the noise coming down the chimney was fearsome.

I too get excited by dramatic weather, saw a waterspout at at sea recently, but flooding is another matter, nearly flooded a couple of years ago and it was scary x

I love storms too! Though in the 1987 one my then three-year-old was blown down our road like one of those tumbleweeds you see in a desert. He was unhurt and we quickly retired back inside!

I'm going on holiday for 10 days to the West Country and frankly I am baffled as to what I should pack.. I am only taking one suitcase and it seems I need to now cover all contingencies

I quite understand the exhilaration of wild stormy weather and I personally find it most atmospheric by the coast. However we've had such a lousy summer with so much rain and a seemingly relentless wind, that Ernesto isn't particularly inspiring me. I was really hoping to squeeze out another week or two of warm sunshine before we're back to anoraks and wellie boots!

I wasn’t a fan at 4am this morning when I was woken by it!

I do have a fascination for storms, I remember watching the big storm (1987?) with two of the children whilst DH slept through our noise and that of the hurricane (storm).

We have also seen a fair few tropical storms (once when on a small boat at sea 🤮) they were spectacular.

Sat in the conservatory drinking coffee, reading GN, sounds like I am sat inside a drum 🤣
