Another missing poster

If this were a light hearted thread, I’d be tempted to suggest that Gransnet is beginning to feel like Midsomer Murders. Yet another poster has disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

It’s deadly serious though. Attempts to contact Urmstongran are falling on stony ground and many of us are concerned because we know how challenging her life is at the moment.

Many of us have received messages of support from Urms when life has dealt us the cruellest of blows and yet we are unable to contact her via pms.

She always let us know when she was taking a break from GN so to go on a long awaited holiday and just disappear is out of character.

I suspect foul play and I’m not taking the p**s!

The only connection as far as I can see between our banned/suspended GN friends is that they are right of centre in terms of their politics…

Banning someone for being right of centre, unless views were racist etc, why should they be banned for their political views.

I thought GG13's post was tongue in cheek!

Someone who was previously banned informed me that HQ not only quoted the post, which prompted the ban, but had also looked back at previous reports.
As Doodledog has said, it is not always black and white.

I too would like HQ to sort things out and see our missing posters back.

One reason for not being able to log in can be the cookies in your cache. I remember previously advising a GN member to delete their browsing history and it worked
The only downside is you become logged out on all devices.

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:11:52

How hard can it be to reinstate someone? I assume Urms and Calli have tried using slightly different names with no joy?

Galaxy Sun 01-Sept-24 09:11:21

I am pretty sure that what doodledog has described is how it works, a number of warnings and then suspension, etc. So it isnt that the last remark was particularly awful it's just it was the 'final' one.

Why on earth is this a third thread about missing posters?🤔

Maybe because two of the missing posters are having issues with logging into GN, and GNHQ are rather slow at helping them.

If there is a specific software problem it could happen to any of us?

Doodledog Sun 01-Sept-24 09:09:16

Indeed, annsixty. My posts have responded to comments about what was said about AR and her son, not suggesting that anyone was banned as a result of them, as we just don’t know what happened.

I, too, would be delighted to find that Calli is just having login problems. Why can’t HQ sort them out, and Urms’ too? Couldn’t they cancel their accounts so they can reregister with the same names?

The message from HQ on one of the deleted threads implied that posters were only banned after a series of warnings- maybe that explains why what may seem to some to be a trivial thing has sparked a banning? Again, we don’t know.

I do feel that at times people don’t seem to see unpleasantness that is not directed at them, particularly if the victim doesn’t make a fuss. Someone clever can hide cruel comments in an otherwise neutral post, or pass them off as ‘bluntness’ or straight talking. If enough people have separately alerted HQ to that sort of thing and warnings have been issued there wouldn’t necessarily have to be a noticeably hostile post to be the final straw. But as before, we don’t know - I speak with no knowledge of this situation, but as someone who has been admin on a discussion board. It’s not always black and white.

Galaxy Sun 01-Sept-24 09:07:41

I am not excusing any comments on AR but I started reporting classism on here I would never ever be finished. Any discussion on Brexit is riddled with it.

Yeah, mountains and molehills alright, and some are like dogs with a bone over the trousersuit fiasco thread.
petra you are 100% correct there, there’s a distinction and I don’t think for one moment that anyone was banned over anything to do with that thread.

It seems that huge mountains have been formed from tiny mole hills.
Much unjustified speculation.

Wisest post on this thread.

Sometimes a website may leave cookies on your computer which "mess it up" and prevent you posting or re-registering a new ID. Its a pretty crude device. In order to re-register (even with a new user name and email address) you have to go into cookie settings and remove all the cookies for that particular website to leave a clean page. Then create your new login script.

I totally agree Doodledog I was horrified Angela Rayner was called a tart.

GSM didn’t call Angela Rayner atart she said she looked like one: big big difference.

Aveline Sun 01-Sept-24 08:46:10

I'm keenly looking forward to the return of Callistemon and GSM. My only worry is that I won't recognise them if they change their names.

Oopsadaisy1 Sun 01-Sept-24 08:43:50

I’m relieved to hear that Urms,Callistemon and GSM are all ok. They are missed.

I suspect, as someone has said that a ‘bot’’ is flagging up certain words or phrases. Maybe even responsible for the banning of certain posters? , which is,( I was going to say sad) really annoying if that’s the case.

Many friendships are formed and they must realise at HQ that we worry when posters just disappear.

kittylester Sun 01-Sept-24 08:41:09

Glad to see your still here at least GG.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 01-Sept-24 08:33:51

I have heard from Callistemon she hasn’t been banned, thank goodness.

She is having the same issues as Urmstongran

It appears GNHQ have a few problems…

Vintagejazz Sun 01-Sept-24 08:24:20

Sorry I was replying to Bigbopper there.

Vintagejazz Sun 01-Sept-24 08:23:36

I totally agree. I don't think anyone should be banned for one ill judged comment, but I do see some posters who seem to be constantly disparaging of other people's views in ways that are rude, dictatorial and insulting. They cause a lot of bad feeling and drive people off gransnet because they create such an awful impression but they seem to behave with impunity, and it's very annoying.

NotSpaghetti Sun 01-Sept-24 08:17:11

I wondered if she was not very well biglouis.

Fortunately some people have been in contact with her since. So that's good at least.

GSM got carried away on that day, as it was unlike her usual posting style. Voicing a remark about the appearance of a female politico is certainly not an egregious crime. It is an "opinion" People are entitled to hold opinions - even if they deeply offend others.

If someone gives their opinion on a post that will offend the poster then that is a definite no no. Why can't someone just reply to a post without getting their knickers in a twist. If you do not agree with the post then say so but there is no need to offend anyone.

Sometimes it sounds as though posters on these forums are children in the playground. If they do not agree with what has been posted, instead of saying so in a decent manner and putting their own opinions forward they get very personal which is so very childish.

M0nica Sun 01-Sept-24 07:56:47

There are lots of disparaging descriptions of homosexual men that equate to tart. I have heard them but cannot remember them offhand.

I think all this talk of class is nonsense, it is just a veil to cover whether people have money or not. You cannot go into any society anywhere without finding these same social divisions with one group looking down on anther, whether you dispargae people for bein 'toffs' or 'working class'

The only way to deal with it is to ignore it and treat all people on an equal footing. This doesn't stop criticism of you think it deserved.

As for all the criticism of Angela Rayner, I simply do not understand it, except the investigation into her finances that was justified but she has now been cleared. In the same way an male Labour MP who owns a block of buy to let flats has been outed as an oppressive landlord, threatening to eveict tenants if they complain about the disgusting condition of their flats, infested by ants and covered in mould.

These forums are full of people claiming to criticise the'class' system' but in actuality supporting it by talking about it all the time.

If you do not want it, then let the change start with you, ignore it. Discuss people as if we all start from the same level. It doesn;t mean you cannot criticise people or a group of people, you just do not talk of them in old fahioned and hackneyed class terms. If everyone did that change would happen.

Indeed. Why the need to feel that you have to call someone that awful name without full personal knowledge of what they have been through? Apart from the fact that many women time past and indeed today have had to resort to the oldest profession in the world to feed her children. And, it is never a sign of good manners or standing to lower yourself to use that kind of language.
