I am sure many of you remember the 1st September 1987 when the shocking news of Princess Diana's death on the night of 31 August reached us.

I started this chat to share memories of that awful day and what came afterwards.

Sorry but AlFayed was not a man of honour , do you think Diana would switch from wanting to marry one man to another man in weeks ? The staff at the Ritz kept the glass why?

I have absolutely no idea what Diana’s thoughts on men or marriage were, I was merely saying what I thought I remembered seeing in Harrod’s, including the diamond ring, and the online pictures and reports suggest that I did see a ring.

I do think it would have been more likely that the glasses would have been cleared away as soon as the room was emptied, but maybe there were no cleaning staff working so late at night. Who knows?

The bodyguard who survived the crash stated that Diana and Dodi were never going to be a great love affair.
Dodi was very keen on the "do you know who my father is?" question, and was something of a man-child.
Diana and he had not even met that long before the crash.

No idea if that's true, but why on earth his father felt he needed a body guard is a mystery to me, because he was not someone people knew, before he was involved with Diana.

In a written statement for the inquest, Hasnat Khan said their relationship had begun in 1995, they had spoken of marriage but he didn’t want the inevitable media attention this was said at the inquest.

It has been suggested Diana did the very public romancing with Dodi Fayed hoping to make Hasnat Khan jealous

27 years!!! shock I hadn't realised it had been so long.

Our eldest son woke us up Sunday morning and told us she was dead; we didn't believe him.

Our youngest daughter (then 9) who had a TV in her bedroom woke us up and said "I'm very sorry - but I think Princess Diana is dead".

We'd got over it by lunchtime

Sansovino Mon 02-Sept-24 19:54:43

Sorry, but I thought she was a silly woman, and nearly as annoying as Princess Margaret. Still, she didn't deserve to die in a car crash.

DH and I were on holiday in Zante to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary, which was 2nd September. We had been sunbathing by the pool all day Sunday and went into the hotel bar at 4pm to have a couple of drinks before going up to our room. He went to get the drinks while I found us a table . A lot of English people were sat round the tv crying 😢 and the screen just had a photo of Diana on it . I said to DH that I thought something may have happened to Diana so he asked one of the other guests who confirmed she had died . It was sad for her family but I was relieved that I was on holiday and wouldn’t have to watch it on the news for days on end . Luckily enough, we were still there for the funeral so didn’t have to watch that either. We were able to put it to the back of our minds and really enjoy our holiday .

valdavi Mon 02-Sept-24 20:25:28

We were on holiday too, so missed the mass reaction, & didn't watch the funeral although the hotel screened it. So sad, Diana was a force of nature. She was so full of life & 'they will not grow old as we that are left grow old' is apt for Diana even if it's a pretty pathetic rationalisation in its original context.

yellowcanary Mon 02-Sept-24 20:38:46

My dad had come up for lunch, and said "well Diana's dead" - I said Diana who. I hadn't had the tv on and wasn't really with it as my husband had passed away a few months before. I was shocked when he said it was the Princess of Wales.

Sorry Sansovino, but you cannot possibly compare Diana to Margaret. Margaret was a prize winning nasty piece of work and an insufferable snob. She treated staff and those she deemed beneath her in the most appalling fashion. Even the usually sycophantic and royalist press struggled to say anything nice about her. Her life was completely vacuous, filled with shallow people, booze and parties. In short, she was horrid with no apparent redeeming features.

Diana, on the other hand, successfully achieved the banning of landmines which is one of the most corrupt, pernicious and vile "industries" on the planet and killed thousands of innocent children every year. It also made billions for the manufacturers and governments worldwide. She was courageous in the extreme to take on this cabal of big boys and they undoubtedly wished she could be silenced, but she didn't give up.

She also gave enormous support to homeless people, often away from the cameras and behind the scenes. She helped a lot of people turn their lives around.

She was involved in many other charities to which she offered unerring support for which she will rightly be remembered.

Finally, the majority of people who met her found her charming and humble. She was very far from a privileged snob and treated her staff with respect and kindness.

No matter what your thoughts on her (and of course she was absolutely not perfect), there is no comparison on any level between her and Margaret.

I remember travelling back up the m1 on that Sunday, I thought it strange that the motorway was dead, sky was really dark at 10 in the morning, it felt really eerie, I had no idea that Princess Diana had died, until I turned on my tv later that day😔

paddyann54 Mon 02-Sept-24 20:54:41

flappergirl what about her disregard of other wives whose husbands she embarked on affairs with? You,d think someone who believed there were three in her marriage wouldn’t want other women to suffer the same…apparently not and she knew no one would turn down the POW !

Anniebach Mon 02-Sept-24 21:25:51

Diana gave up most of her charities following the divorce. Yes,
I agree with Paddyann. the three in the marriage was a lie,

What is so unfair is the constant calling Diana ‘a brood mare’,
this from her tell all book , ‘I knew I had to keep myself tidy’,
why ?

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 02-Sept-24 22:33:33

I remember my eldest daughter then 14 running into the bedroom saying ' We don't have a Princess Diana anymore ' Total shock and a great loss to one so young. Can't believe it's been so long.

Mt61 Tue 03-Sept-24 00:38:36

I cried as I think it was very sad, she was so young, (it was just a tragic accident) leaving those two boys- if only she had belted up

Pippa22 Tue 03-Sept-24 01:13:42

It was a really very sad time and affected an unbelievable number of people really deeply. It was like infectious mass hysteria and at times was hard to believe that so many people felt that they knew Diana which of course none of us did.

It seemed really clear that night and also times before , how much Diana teased and taunted the press. She paid the ultimate price for it which was really very sad but she was not the innocent person many thought she was and her affairs proved that as well as her rather reckless behaviour.

mumofmadboys Tue 03-Sept-24 06:21:34

I wonder if the relationship between her boys would have been better if Diana had lived.

Calendargirl Tue 03-Sept-24 06:50:36

Why did they need to dash off in the night instead of staying at the Ritz?

Why were they not wearing seatbelts?

History could have been very different.

Anniebach Tue 03-Sept-24 08:01:24

They left the Ritz because the cameras were waiting, what other reason, she had been playing for the cameras that holiday, sitting on the end of a diving board, snuggling with Dodi Fayed in the boat.

To add to flappergirl's post, Diana also did a lot for AIDS sufferers, hugging them, holding their hands and refusing to treat them as untouchables.

Agree with Scribbles.

M0nica Tue 03-Sept-24 21:07:46

I think Princess Margaret gets an uneccessarily poor press. I do not deny any thing said above, but no one asks 'why'.

Princess was a very intelligent and creative person, who had to spend her whole life doing nothing. Her position as a Prncess and sister of the Queen meant she could not undertake any meaningful work in any sphere. Princess Diana was 2 generations below Princess Margaret. Things had changed. She was expected to have causes and interests and her divorce enabled her to take on politically sensitive issues, like landmines.

And while Princess Diana made a disastrous marriage, she entered it willingly enough. Princess Margaret was stopped from marrying the man she really loved and I think became the vacuous party girl she became because nothing much else was on offer.

Were Princess Margaret to be born into the Royal Family today, her life would be replete with opportunities that used her talents and intelligence. She would be a very different, and probably, morelikeable person because she would be able to have a purpose in life.

Mollygo Tue 03-Sept-24 21:23:52

Well put M0nica.
At least she didn’t have to suffer having her life pulled to pieces on today’s social media. The press and TV all shared their opinions, which was bad enough.

Anniebach Tue 03-Sept-24 21:29:51

Agree about Margaret, restricted upbringing, very close to her
sister . Only 22 when her father died and her sister became Queen, she must have felt quite lost, then there was Townsend
age 38, Harry goes on and on about being the spare, poor Margaret.

I was living in Beijing. It was about 1 o’ clock and I had just come home from the local food market when the phone rang. Someone from the Beijing office broke the very sad news to me, I thought they were joking. A few days later I signed the book of condolence at the British Embassy.
