Basically do you gransnetters enjoy using the apps, I must admit I’m on Instagram Facebook and Twitter and while I’m sitting down having a coffee I love to go on Instagram or Twitter to see the lovely animals especially!

I used to pride myself on my use of technology but it all seems to have gone beyond me now. I do use FB, online groups and whatsapp but only occasionally and again I'm sure I am missing out a lot. I even struggle with the TV, never having seen, used or even heard of some of things people mention on here.

I could do with one of those Idiots Guides to things. I fear that if I become housebound or even just failing health I will become isolated and very bored.

You must be in the wrong groups, Gotellthebees!

Occasionally there are ridiculous posts on the local FB page, trolling type posts but they are soon put back in their place.

Other groups I belong to seem very polite and helpful.

Gotellthebees Thu 05-Sept-24 16:33:07

I loathe FB. There is so much hatred, contempt and division in the world; I believe social media is used to fuel this and spread misinformation. And don't get me started on "influencers."

JudyBloom Thu 05-Sept-24 15:04:00

I keep in touch with family and friends who live far and wide on facebook and I find Youtube very versatile including '"armchair travelling" :-)

Maggiemaybe Thu 05-Sept-24 14:52:57

I used to post a lot on Facebook, but now rarely do. I’m still a member of various local and interest groups though, and an old girls’ group, so find it very useful for keeping up with what’s going on.

I’m signed up for Instagram and X. The former I’ve never really got to grips with, the second I have a look at when I hear (usually from Facebook) that something interesting or funny’s going on.

I wouldn’t be without YouTube. From exercise videos to fixing a printer to checking out funeral songs to putting up a gazebo, it’s fantastic. And all for free.

00opsidia Thu 05-Sept-24 14:39:07

No because I am an anonymous user and prefer to stay that way.

I have other SM and don't identify with being a "gran" publically as I don't see my GK.

Mt61 Thu 05-Sept-24 14:31:15

No GN is plenty for me 😊

Juicylucy Thu 05-Sept-24 13:36:11

Don’t like Facebook so I’m not on it. I like Instagram and since covid tik tok. X is debatable.

TheWeirdo Thu 05-Sept-24 12:42:46

And I use YouTube for wrestling videos! I also have a blog.

TheWeirdo Thu 05-Sept-24 12:40:32

I'm on Twitter, Instagram and Threads and I know what you mean about the animals!

Little bums wiggling! Smiley faces! Fishes blowing bubbles!

That one called "local network" can be useful if you have something you want to dispose of free/cheap. Its mostly lost cats, people looking for a gardener, cleaners or handyperson. Probably very useful if your looking for cash in hand jobs. Can also be useful for warning the neighbourhood about anyone dubious like potential burglars trying cars, scammers etc.

I would never post personal stuff on social media under my own name.

I use FB to keep up with friends, family use it very occasionally, we have a family group on What's app, and do all calls, including international. I don't like X or Instagram, snap chat for youngsters. I do love You tube, watch this most of time for up to date news, travel, in fact been watching Cunard trans Atlantic voyage, thatll do for me!! , cookery, films , audio books, and for fixing things its amazing. Much better than any of the main TV channels.

Not on anything except GNet and post comments (also anonymously) in one of the online UK newspapers.OH is in some special interest groups on Facebook : I am not.
Even though both OH and I have a very light digital footprints we still receive loads of scamming garbage via e-mail and text.
I worry that using social media would expose us to even more scamming stuff.
Am tempted to use some of the Facebook special interest groups provided I can keep my personal data private( that's what worries me).
I've also seen some social media misused (in my opinion). I have a step-daughter in her 40s who uses , I think, Facebook and Instagram. During a split from her partner ,who is the father of two of her children, the media was used for mutual mud-slinging , I gather, and it didn't improve their post- split relationship.
I'm not tech-phobic. I was competent to work in a business environment until I retired in 2017.
It's the exposure of personal data that worries me.

I use Facebook, and You Tube quite a lot.

I also like Webcamtaxi, which isn't social media but lots of different webcams from around the world in different settings - very interesting.

Rekarie Wed 04-Sept-24 19:28:31

I'm on FB but only really use Messenger

My absolute favourite is Tiktok. Like most people I was very dismissing of it.

However, during lockdown I became quite the addict. It really has fabulous clips. I've learned so much I never knew about all sorts.

It's not just youngsters dancing around. Everything under the sun is covered.

One of my favourites is the abandoned buildings around the world, graveyards, the place where cruise liners go to die. Incredible film of divers in the North Sea, surfers in Portugal, where they have the biggest waves in the world.
It's also very up to date on news. I'd heard about the school shooting today before it hit our press. There's just so much on there.

And brilliant music. Of all genres. I'm quite obsessed with it as you can possibly tell!

Used social media much more when I was working. On Facebook for family/close friends only and for local events.

Use a few forums occasionally including GN and one for family history. Probably spend more time on YouTube than anywhere else though.

Cossy Wed 04-Sept-24 18:26:31

I’m on my local Next Door Website, Facebook and Instagram. I absolutely refuse to use X!

kittylester Wed 04-Sept-24 17:18:53

I do Face Book and Instagram to see what's going on around me and to keep up with family. Instagram for the same reason.

Siope Wed 04-Sept-24 17:14:26

I have a private Insta account, for a particular set of friends with a shared interest.

Two X/Twitter accounts, one professional, one personal. Ditto bluesky.

I have a Linked-In account, because I do some bits of consultancy work, and it's useful.

I have a blog, which, although it isn't private, is quite niche, so is fairly quiet as these things go - I think it averages about 2000 views a post. It's not linked on the search engines with my real name.

And I'm on some interest based forums.

Babs03 Wed 04-Sept-24 17:03:17

Don’t do social media, was abused on it once and without going into detail it ended very badly, so don’t do FB, instagram, or any of it, just post on here and CIF on the guardian, also have a WhatsApp groups just for the close family.
Will never leave myself exposed again. Xx

Wheniwasyourage Wed 04-Sept-24 16:58:00

I use FB only to find out what is happening locally as we no longer have a useful local paper. I don't stay on it long though, as I hate the way everybody seems to complain about everything. If it's not the council's fault, it's the government's fault. Nothing can ever be just one of those things, or an accident which is nobody's fault.

Never used, or wanted to use, Instagram or Twitter or any other SM except one called Gransnet, which you might have heard of.

Allira Wed 04-Sept-24 16:56:19

Facebook for keeping up with family and friends who might be far away and for information on the local FB page, plus special interest groups which can be very helpful.

I do look for craft instruction videos on YouTube

That's it really.

MissInterpreted Wed 04-Sept-24 16:49:47

I love social media - I'm on various Facebook groups and admin on several of them. It can have its downside, but I find it useful for keeping in touch with people who don't live close to me, and I have found certain groups a very useful source of information for things which interest me. I also like Twitter, Pinterest and various others. I think it stems from my work days when social media was all part of my job.

biglouis Wed 04-Sept-24 16:46:46

I use Facebook and Pinterest very extensively. Facebook has hundreds of special interest groups. I am enrolled in about a dozen for people who collect antiques and vintage of various kinds. They are good for selling and buying direct without the hassle of going via Ebay or another marketplace. Its a bit like Ebay used to be.

I also like YouTube which is good for finding out various things - like how to get rust off steel hatpins, how to bleed a radiator, etc.

Visgir1 Wed 04-Sept-24 16:36:29

X and Instagram for me to look at when bored.
Never bothered with FB.
