Autumn has come early this year

We are fortunate to live in a well tree-ed part of the country and over the last week we have seen so many trees that are already turning brown and yellow. Drivinbg around the countryside has a real Autumn tint.

I cannot remember when I remember seeing the trees change colour so early. In recent years the trees do not seem to even begin change colour until October.

Yes Babs03, I bought one earlier in the year. It was a Godsend when I was poorly. Much better than my hot water bottle. It’s cheap to run too. We’ve had a rotten summer up here in the far northwest. So much more rain than usual and hardly any warm spells. The garden has been a complete washout.

It flamming well is, my legs are purple with the cold today, sat with a blanket & hot water bottle as I don’t want to put the heating on😩

Yes we won’t put heating on yet either, is too early, despite the chill, are determined not to be ripped off too royally by our energy company. My DH has an electric over blanket which is fleecy, it doesn’t use much electric and is better than a hot water bottle. Last time I looked they average at about £40, so not cheap but my DH got a lot of mileage out of it last year and will certainly use it again.
Take care x

Colder and windier here today. For the first time I wore a jumper and have put on my thicker dressing gown. Am not unhappy about it though, down here at least we had a summer unlike those further North. And tbh weather in Croatia and Italy has been far worse, a friend in Lake Garda reports terrible storms for several days and torrential rain that lasts all day or all night. She also tells me that her daughter and Sil are in Split in Croatia and is terrible weather there.
So will take what we have here.

I went to pick a few blackberries to go in an apple crumble but they are very few and far between now. I thought we’d have a few more Autumn crumbles before the end of October.
My dad forbade us from picking blackberries after 31st October because the devil would have spat on them - no danger of that this year!

Spent an hour today brushing up acorns from the drive. Absolutely huge acorns this year but I don't know why. The garden waste bin now weighs a ton.

Mine is full of cider apples, I felt so guilty about the weight of it that yesterday I filled all the garden trugs and buckets I could find and took more fallen apples to the recycling centre - the wind and rain seems to be speeding up the rate at which they are falling from the tree this year.

Thanks MOnica I shall try low rise. The ones I have now are rather like wearing a corset

So many squirrels at the moment making a real mess of my potted plants, every year is the same, and of course there are the big spiders that spin webs everywhere in the garden, I go out with a broom handle when I walk through the garden, swinging it from side to side so I don’t walk through a web.

JamesandJon33 Lands End do a low rise trouser, which on most people means just below the waist, but in my case means fits nicely to the waist. This is why I buy them. I have a real problem with so many trousers at present being high rise. For me that means a comfy fit under the armpits!smile

Reading Monica's post made me realise how different things are here.

Here (South Denmark) the leaves start changing colour towards the end of August - the rowanberries are ripe, the elderberries are done, as per usual in the second week of September.and the apple harvest has finished very early.

But although the evenings and mornings are colder than a month ago, the days have been much warmer - finally. We have had the wettest summer on record since the Met. office was started in 18 - something or other!

I have always said you are a month ahead of us, it follows with the school holidays too. I remember some beautiful summers year in year out in Denmark in the 40s and 50s. Childhood memories

We have been away for the weekend.
It feels and looks like the start of Autumn happened while we were away.

We in central Scotland have bypassed spring/ summer completely and it seems like we've gone from winter to autumn with just rain and more rain between the two seasons! Depressing! However Autumn is my favourite season so....

I'll have a look at Lands End & M&S this evening....

Allira Mon 09-Sept-24 18:26:58

M0nica

valdavi I get mine form Lands End. They are more expensive than supermarket and most you can buy in M&S, but they fit me really well, so look good on, and are hard wearing.

Oh, mine might be Lands End, not White Stuff. I bought them a couple of years ago.
Apologies for misinformation.

JamesandJon33 Mon 09-Sept-24 18:25:34

I buy my cords mostly from M&S. But I have one pair from Lands End which are a bit long in the body. Also Seasalt trousers are good. My favourite are a pair from Toast, slightly wider cord and ending about 4 inches above the ankle.

I bought corduroy trousers from White Stuff and M&S valdavi.

Where did you get the cordorouys MOnica? I used to wear them all the time, then stopped when I was crawling around after young children all day because the nap on the knee went. Since then they've not been fashionable or findable but now you can get them again I would love a pair.

Spent two hours, or may be more in the garden this morning - and it was cold. I had a fleece over my T shirt and was not inclined to take it off, even though I was doing hard work digging the rest of the potato crop up. Yesterday, I got quite hot doing the same job and did take it off.

No sun at all so far today, just thick dark cloud. The Met Office forecast assures me that for the next 2 hours the sun is going to shine in a cloudless sky, but I am not placing bets on it.

Meanwhile I wait in anticipation for the winter clothes I ordered yesterdy to arrive - 2 sweaters, one thin, one thick and a pair of cord trousers.

Allira Mon 09-Sept-24 13:58:16

At last some sunshine today!
I just sat in the garden for 15 minutes and got some Vitamin D before the weather changes again. It felt really warm.

mabon1 Mon 09-Sept-24 13:38:11

Autumnal is a better choice of word.

Witzend Mon 09-Sept-24 13:33:46

Weather has really changed here since last Tuesday. A sister arrived to stay that day - it was really properly, summer-type hot, we sat in the garden for ages - mostly in the shade, too hot otherwise.

Ever since then, cloud, rain, thunderstorms, along with some fairly pleasant mild, damp-ish days.
