Autumn has come early this year

We are fortunate to live in a well tree-ed part of the country and over the last week we have seen so many trees that are already turning brown and yellow. Drivinbg around the countryside has a real Autumn tint.

I cannot remember when I remember seeing the trees change colour so early. In recent years the trees do not seem to even begin change colour until October.

Our drive is already covered in acorns, something that normally doesn't happen till mid September, followed by weeks of leaves descending on us.

I was saying to someone a few days ago that our weather is getting almost tropical, weeks of no rain followed by a thunderstorm and downpour. For the second time in a month we've had thunder and lightening for three days running, and raining stair rods for hours. We've had a fair bit of sun this Summer, but little heat apart from about 5 days.

We had thunder in the night. Today is quite warm, although distinctly autumnal.

I have spent the morning digging up the potato patch. Not much to show for it this year, but if the farmers are saying it is a bad year for potatoes, I could hardly expect to buck the trend.

Lovely sunshine here in the Midlands.

Tidying in the garden today, lots of colour still, the Magnolia is flowering again, it’s a strange year

I resist thinking of autumn until the equinox which I think is end of next week. No sign of squirrels yet in the garden. This summer has been reminiscent of the wet summers of my childhood in the 50s.

Lots of squirrels in our garden. Come for the acorns I expect

M0nica Sun 08-Sept-24 18:05:09

Lots of squirrels in the garden and broken hazelnuts everywhere.

The equinox ought to be the middle of a season, not its start because that is when the mid vallue is set.

The winter equinox, December 21 is the shortest daylight of the year and the point where the world starts tipping back and days get longer. So autumn runs from mid-August to mid November. So Autumn is not early ths year!

Summer came late, very late and autumn weather is with us too early. . Grey and wet today in outer London, most of the week but something to look forward to, Saturday week is forecast sunny. 😎
A squeezed summer indeed.

I think we were fairly lucky here with the summer, the SW is usually relatively rainy but july & august we had v little rain during the day. I'm surprised by the trees though, definite autumn colour on some round here & it does seem very sudden & early. Squirrels dashing about too. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a warm couple of weeks later on though.

If there's an Indian Summer it must be in India!

bobbydog24 Mon 09-Sept-24 12:44:22

I walk my dog through the local woods every morning and the leaves have been falling from the trees for at least 2 weeks now and there are conkers everywhere. We used to collect conkers in October.
Forecast is colder weather coming. Was there a summer or did I blink and miss it.

My Kilmarnock willow is looking very sorry for itself. Started turning in late August. Never known it turn so early.

I am still waiting for summer......

grandtanteJE65 Mon 09-Sept-24 13:27:27

Reading Monica's post made me realise how different things are here.

Here (South Denmark) the leaves start changing colour towards the end of August - the rowanberries are ripe, the elderberries are done, as per usual in the second week of September.and the apple harvest has finished very early.

But although the evenings and mornings are colder than a month ago, the days have been much warmer - finally. We have had the wettest summer on record since the Met. office was started in 18 - something or other!

Weather has really changed here since last Tuesday. A sister arrived to stay that day - it was really properly, summer-type hot, we sat in the garden for ages - mostly in the shade, too hot otherwise.

Ever since then, cloud, rain, thunderstorms, along with some fairly pleasant mild, damp-ish days.

mabon1 Mon 09-Sept-24 13:38:11

Autumnal is a better choice of word.

Allira Mon 09-Sept-24 13:58:16

At last some sunshine today!
I just sat in the garden for 15 minutes and got some Vitamin D before the weather changes again. It felt really warm.

M0nica Mon 09-Sept-24 14:28:35

Spent two hours, or may be more in the garden this morning - and it was cold. I had a fleece over my T shirt and was not inclined to take it off, even though I was doing hard work digging the rest of the potato crop up. Yesterday, I got quite hot doing the same job and did take it off.

No sun at all so far today, just thick dark cloud. The Met Office forecast assures me that for the next 2 hours the sun is going to shine in a cloudless sky, but I am not placing bets on it.

Meanwhile I wait in anticipation for the winter clothes I ordered yesterdy to arrive - 2 sweaters, one thin, one thick and a pair of cord trousers.

valdavi Mon 09-Sept-24 16:33:06

Where did you get the cordorouys MOnica? I used to wear them all the time, then stopped when I was crawling around after young children all day because the nap on the knee went. Since then they've not been fashionable or findable but now you can get them again I would love a pair.

Allira Mon 09-Sept-24 16:47:24

I bought corduroy trousers from White Stuff and M&S valdavi.

M0nica Mon 09-Sept-24 17:48:34

valdavi I get mine form Lands End. They are more expensive than supermarket and most you can buy in M&S, but they fit me really well, so look good on, and are hard wearing.

JamesandJon33 Mon 09-Sept-24 18:25:34

I buy my cords mostly from M&S. But I have one pair from Lands End which are a bit long in the body. Also Seasalt trousers are good. My favourite are a pair from Toast, slightly wider cord and ending about 4 inches above the ankle.

Oh, mine might be Lands End, not White Stuff. I bought them a couple of years ago.
Apologies for misinformation.

valdavi Mon 09-Sept-24 18:28:47

I'll have a look at Lands End & M&S this evening....

Mojack26 Mon 09-Sept-24 19:11:28

We in central Scotland have bypassed spring/ summer completely and it seems like we've gone from winter to autumn with just rain and more rain between the two seasons! Depressing! However Autumn is my favourite season so....

fancythat Mon 09-Sept-24 19:19:29

We have been away for the weekend.
It feels and looks like the start of Autumn happened while we were away.
