Sister Boniface Mysteries

I saw my first episode of the Sister Boniface Mysteries and absolutely loved it. Whilst very twee and a mixture of Father Brown/Midsommer Murders/Grantchester/Miss Marple/Call the Midwife, I just loved the innocence of a bygone era and the comedic execution. Most dramas I don't watch anymore as they are way to complex for my poor little brain, but I just loved it.

Thanks, I might try it.

You can have too much of the grit and dark dramas!

She's been around for a while now, on Britbox.
She has also appeared in Father Brown.
Like Father Brown it's delightful and easy to watch.

Too twee for me, I'm afraid.

I have been watching and enjoying it. No swear words, no graphic violence.
It does make a pleasant change from
the darker murder series but I like them too.

It’s a good idea, I like the main character, but it reminded me of the later Father Brown stories which were just so silly that I couldn’t watched them anymore.

We like McDonald and Dodds which is set in Bath.

I’m another fan of Sister Boniface. It’s an easy and cheering watch.

Same here. The early series’ had some great characters but now it’s been updated the characters no longer fit in with the period

I’m not sure about Sister Boniface. I usually nod off after about 10 minutes but that’s probably because I’ve just had some lunch
😂

Me too. I live near Bath and enjoy spotting various places. And the characters are very likeable and fit well together.

Yes Sparklefizz it is very twee but also daft & lacking charm. I don't like her face & have an aversion to nuns (my sister went to Notre Dame school) I highly recommend a detective series on BBC Iplayer : Shakespeare & Hatherway, its charming, clever & fun, but not daft.smile

I too have an aversion to nuns having been subject to their attempt to brainwash to imbue their pupils with their weird attitudes to essentially normal practices. No Bonnifaces at my convent school, more like Sister Hatchet Face

I'm not one for daytime viewing with the exception of Escape to the Country.

Well said.

My husband feels he same having been to a Secondary school run by (horrible & violent) Jesuit priests!

I absolutely love it. There’s been 3 series and I’ve watched everyone twice. I love the theme tune too.

It’s the sort of programme that isn’t based on an actual reality, it’s sort of an amped up version of life in the sixties, if you know what I mean. The people portrayed are an exaggerated version of characters. The dopey police officer, the dreadful landlady and her dreadful cooking, the go getting female reporter and the local yokel who mumbles incoherently.

It’s a fun programme with no boobs, no crude jokes, no politics and no violence.

I highly recommend it.

What channel?

sodapop Sat 07-Sept-24 13:57:11

I found it too twee as well Sparklefizz I prefer Father Brown but the earlier series not with the present cast.

Nandalot Sat 07-Sept-24 14:24:04

Cossy, perhaps your DH and mine went to the same school. Apparently, Alfred Hitchcock went there and claims his sense of suspense came from waiting for the call to go for corporal punishment.

Tuaim Sat 07-Sept-24 17:05:10

Thank you for all your replies and you have also given me some ideas of other detective series to watch.

Like Father Brown Sister Boniface is a very pleasant period piece , but unlike Agatha Christie 's dramatisations - the plots are weak to the point of being ludicrous .
I really like the actors in both dramas and occasionally half watch them whilst doing something else !

We like McDonald and Dodds which is set in Bath.

In the same category almost: Shakespeare & Hathaway - nothing gratuitously gruesome and lovely scenery. Not a single rundown tenement to be seen.

Deedaa Sat 07-Sept-24 19:36:47

Thanks to Sister Boniface my new swear word is "Fishbums"

Tricia2 Sat 07-Sept-24 21:36:11

The last detective is pretty good. I like the main character.
