No success at the House of Lords so here's a suggestion.
The only thing they don't say is whether to buy a multipack or what flavour,

I’m having trouble sleeping so thought I’d check GN and clicked on the link - and I just couldn’t believe what I was reading. He’s probably being paid by Walkers

Perhaps we should be using cast off bubble wrap to stick on our bodies? Best not sit down - we might pop.

Esmay Thu 12-Sept-24 04:29:06

So that's how our Government will be economising this winter in their own homes -thanks for the tip .

What's next ?

Wearing a coat , scarf , hat and mittens indoors and drinking lots of hot tea and soup . And if you run out - a cup of hot water .

I have lived like that for an eight year period and it's not funny .

Your body seizes up .

Another one who can't sleep. An annoyed as I threw away a crisp packet yesterday If only I'd known!

I thought this was a spoof. I still can’t quite believe it’s not.

But I think this is your man. He’s got quite the portfolio of businesses. He’s really racked his brains for these ideas hasn't he? hmm

Assuming that pensioners who have to choose between eating and heating can afford to buy crisps.

ronib Thu 12-Sept-24 09:47:24

Kitchen foil behind radiators might be better - it might be more economical than buying crisps in bulk?

merlotgran Thu 12-Sept-24 09:54:43

So if it takes a while to freeze us all to death they want us to eat salt laden, high fat ultra processed food to hurry things along a bit?

Surprised the advice is to use clean crisp packets. I was thinking if I didn’t wash them I’d use a different flavour in each room and inhale the aroma. It would cut down the food bills and make meal times interesting.

Start in the kitchen with prawn cocktail aroma for a starter. Then relax in the living room while I watch tv and inhale the delicious aroma of BBQ beef hula hoops. That’s just dessert to sort out now.

I won’t even need to buy the crisps. I’ll ask the family to save their wrappers up for me 😊

Disappointing - I was hoping an idea of how to join crisp packets together to make a foil blanket..

maddyone Thu 12-Sept-24 11:55:10

One crisp packet!
What a ridiculous idea. However, tinfoil would work, so long as it was placed with the shiny (reflective) side facing inwards.

Maggiemaybe Thu 12-Sept-24 12:13:10

Foil behind the radiators does help - I kitted ours out last year and it made a difference (unless I was imagining it, of course). And the foil’s cheaper than buying crisps, and a lot less smelly, I presume!

A well known phrase about grandmothers and eggs springs to mind!

I don't eat crisps, or at least very rarely.

What about used, washed tinfoil? It might still have a few bits of food stuck to it but that should dry out.

😂😂😂

I'm using up my stash of yarn (bought over years I should add) to make hats, gloves, scarves, jumpers, blankets, vests, socks.

Anyone got a pattern for long woollen knickers?

Delila Thu 12-Sept-24 13:06:55

I’ve been wondering what to do with all those empty crisp packets cluttering up my house, and the bubble-wrap I’ve saved from deliveries over the years - here’s the answer! I’ll be warmer, and it won’t be all that bad not being able to see out of my windows for a few months.

sharon103 Thu 12-Sept-24 14:14:03

I'm sitting here laughing. These comments are soo funny.
As I said, if you don't laugh, you'll cry.

Seriously though, I think the result is absolutely shameful!
I thought that the House of Lords would at least say that there would be a delay.
I've never voted in the local elections but I will next time and it won't be Labour. Our current one is Labour and she was on the list of backing the cut.
After the budget coming up I'm sure I'll be digging a hole and getting in it.

ronib Thu 12-Sept-24 14:42:10

I was surprised initially by the result in the Lords but thinking about it, why would any opposition party want to stop Labour from a massive own goal? So passing a motion of regret is the best way out? Shameful all round though.

Allira Thu 12-Sept-24 14:43:26

Do we wash them, stick them together to make one large sheet?
Which are best - are Tyrrells lightly sea salted ok or does it have to be Walkers? Tesco own make?

Some crisps are made locally and the bags are apparently compostable so will they disintegrate slowly and disappear?

So many ponderables.

Mollygo Thu 12-Sept-24 14:49:03

Is it only the crisp packets themselves or can I use the wrappers of the multi packs?
Just asking.
Maybe GN’s could do a countrywide collection of crisp packets and deliver them to Starmer to hand out to his MPs who are claiming heating allowances.

I think that "compostable" in that example (and when used of teabags) means only if you are composting on an industrial scale so that a good deal of heat is generated by the rotting process. Certainly supposedly compostable teabags did not rot down in my large compost heaps that otherwise made very good compost. I had to fish all the unrotted teabags out 😠

I suspect crisp packets would be the same – technically compostable but not by home composters so a bit of a false claim really.

Perhaps people could donate empty crisp packets to pensioners; they could set up Crisp Packet Banks and people could queue up in the cold for donated packets.
We might even find a stray crisp lurking in the bottom of some if we're really lucky.
