No success at the House of Lords so here's a suggestion.
The only thing they don't say is whether to buy a multipack or what flavour,

Baggs

Allira

Do we wash them, stick them together to make one large sheet?
Which are best - are Tyrrells lightly sea salted ok or does it have to be Walkers? Tesco own make?

Some crisps are made locally and the bags are apparently compostable so will they disintegrate slowly and disappear?

So many ponderables.

I think that "compostable" in that example (and when used of teabags) means only if you are composting on an industrial scale so that a good deal of heat is generated by the rotting process. Certainly supposedly compostable teabags did not rot down in my large compost heaps that otherwise made very good compost. I had to fish all the unrotted teabags out 😠

I suspect crisp packets would be the same – technically compostable but not by home composters so a bit of a false claim really.

Two Farmers Crisps

Our old packaging was certified home compostable but with only 2 layers of cellulose it affected the shelf life and freshness of the crisps.

To be officially called home compostable the material needs to compost with in 26 weeks or less and because ours is between 27-36 weeks due to the extra layer of cellulose that is keeping them fresher for longer we can’t now use this term on our packs, but they can be used for home composting.

So yes, but it takes longer than the time which is specified for home composting.

Another case of people trying to teach grandmothers to suck eggs.

Putting foil behind your radiators is an old trick recommended for 30 or 40 years or more. I wold imagine that most older people put foil behind their radiators years ago. I started putting foil behind my radiators the better part of 40 years ago.

You can buy insulated rolls of foil at any DIY store and it is easier to cut and fit than doing anything as daft as using crisp packets, the cost of the packets of crisps needed will probably exceed the cost of the proper product.

Allira Thu 12-Sept-24 15:40:59

The foil hides those little bits of wall which you failed to paint behind the radiators too, the bits you only notice when you wash your brush and sit down with a ☕

I might buy a tube of Pringles at Christmas but what pensioners buy packets of crisps? Maybe for grandchildren?

25 or so years ago I wrapped foil around sheets of cardboard and tucked them behind each radiator. They’re all still there and perhaps they made a difference, but now I live alone I only put the heating on if there’s a real risk of pipes bursting.

I love them!

Is it only the crisp packets themselves or can I use the wrappers of the multi packs?
Just asking.
Maybe GN’s could do a countrywide collection of crisp packets and deliver them to Starmer to hand out to his MPs who are claiming heating allowances.

Perhaps people could donate empty crisp packets to pensioners; they could set up Crisp Packet Banks and people could queue up in the cold for donated packets.
We might even find a stray crisp lurking in the bottom of some if we're really lucky.

😂 Am reading this out to Mum who’s over at my place for a cuppa right now and she says you’ll have to stop or she’ll have a seizure while laughing. She sure isn’t laughing about having her WFA taken away and in fact is very upset as she relied on it.
I won’t go on about it as I’ve already had my rants on other threads but still 🤬

Same here on all counts.
I never feel guilty at opening and eating crisps now as there’s hardly any inside , it’s 50% air.

He missed the bit about making a sleeping bag out of crisp packets........................[hmmm]

MissAdventure Thu 12-Sept-24 15:58:59

Annoying, isn't it?
A greedy person like me might be forced to eat two bags at a time.

Allira Thu 12-Sept-24 16:01:00

Hope your Mum stays warm this winter, Oreo

I've been investigating and Screwfix seem quite reasonably priced for foil to fit behind the radiators.

How is it fixed? I must admit we've never done this, our walls are dry lined.

Allira Thu 12-Sept-24 16:02:16

What - all at once, do you mean all in your mouth at the same time?😯

Why can't I read the article , a pop up comes on asking me to subscriber to the Express Newspaper.😡 any ideas everyone.
I get the gist, from everyone else comments that this person wants us to use empty crisp packets behind our radiators to generate heat. Wow why haven't any of us tried or thought of that before!! We could have made a fortune over the years. Not being a big crisp eater I might take a while to collect enough of them though. We will all be living like those people who don't get rid of their rubbish and it piles up around them until they only have a little corner of the living room to sit in.

Oreo Thu 12-Sept-24 16:16:19

Thanks Allira I will make sure she stays warm as I regularly check on her.

Picture the scene, as several of our friends are round enjoying coffee and cake and conversation, when heads go up and noses sniff sniff as warm wafts of cheese and onion scented air reach them😲

He might be suggesting that we weave old crisp packets together to make ourselves insulated vests.

It’s the latest gimmick by DM and other papers. . You can pay to access it or you can get it free by agreeing to have your details shared with lord knows how many firms.

Never mind crisp packets, I am going to smear myself in goose fat and fashion a liberty bodice type garment from an old fleece top, then get someone to sew me into it for the winter. Will be unpicked next Spring.

What else can you throw at us Starmer?

Start saving your crisp packets now MissA, and then you’ll have enough empty packets by the time you reach pension age grin

£200? To thousands and thousands of people who basically live in Spain and/ or are on a cruise?
Crisp packets down a radiator?

We don’t do this either. All our internal walls are solid brick, and the cavities are filled with little insulating bubbles. The loft is well insulated too, and the windows and doors replaced and the glass double glazed. There’s not much more we can do. I don’t think either crisp packets or tinfoil would do any more.

Thanks for this info, Allira. I didn't know that. However, my heaps were older than that when I went to use the compost and the "biodegradable" teabags still hadn't composted. The tea leaves had and everything else in the heaps including a lot of wood. Hey ho, I say.

My father in law used to tell us a tale of someone who sewed themselves up for the winter.
