Never mind crisp packets, I am going to smear myself in goose fat and fashion a liberty bodice type garment from an old fleece top, then get someone to sew me into it for the winter. Will be unpicked next Spring.

I get the gist, from everyone else comments that this person wants us to use empty crisp packets behind our radiators to generate heat. Wow why haven't any of us tried or thought of that before!! We could have made a fortune over the years. Not being a big crisp eater I might take a while to collect enough of them though. We will all be living like those people who don't get rid of their rubbish and it piles up around them until they only have a little corner of the living room to sit in.

He might be suggesting that we weave old crisp packets together to make ourselves insulated vests.

Picture the scene, as several of our friends are round enjoying coffee and cake and conversation, when heads go up and noses sniff sniff as warm wafts of cheese and onion scented air reach them😲

I've been investigating and Screwfix seem quite reasonably priced for foil to fit behind the radiators.

How is it fixed? I must admit we've never done this, our walls are dry lined.

Perhaps people could donate empty crisp packets to pensioners; they could set up Crisp Packet Banks and people could queue up in the cold for donated packets.
We might even find a stray crisp lurking in the bottom of some if we're really lucky.

I might buy a tube of Pringles at Christmas but what pensioners buy packets of crisps? Maybe for grandchildren?

25 or so years ago I wrapped foil around sheets of cardboard and tucked them behind each radiator. They’re all still there and perhaps they made a difference, but now I live alone I only put the heating on if there’s a real risk of pipes bursting.

The foil hides those little bits of wall which you failed to paint behind the radiators too, the bits you only notice when you wash your brush and sit down with a ☕

Another case of people trying to teach grandmothers to suck eggs.

Putting foil behind your radiators is an old trick recommended for 30 or 40 years or more. I wold imagine that most older people put foil behind their radiators years ago. I started putting foil behind my radiators the better part of 40 years ago.

You can buy insulated rolls of foil at any DIY store and it is easier to cut and fit than doing anything as daft as using crisp packets, the cost of the packets of crisps needed will probably exceed the cost of the proper product.

Some crisps are made locally and the bags are apparently compostable so will they disintegrate slowly and disappear?

I think that "compostable" in that example (and when used of teabags) means only if you are composting on an industrial scale so that a good deal of heat is generated by the rotting process. Certainly supposedly compostable teabags did not rot down in my large compost heaps that otherwise made very good compost. I had to fish all the unrotted teabags out 😠

I suspect crisp packets would be the same – technically compostable but not by home composters so a bit of a false claim really.

Two Farmers Crisps

Our old packaging was certified home compostable but with only 2 layers of cellulose it affected the shelf life and freshness of the crisps.

To be officially called home compostable the material needs to compost with in 26 weeks or less and because ours is between 27-36 weeks due to the extra layer of cellulose that is keeping them fresher for longer we can’t now use this term on our packs, but they can be used for home composting.

So yes, but it takes longer than the time which is specified for home composting.
