Twin wash basins (or sinks)

Being slightly under the weather at the moment I've been watching day time tv. My current favourite (very naff) is My Lottery Dream Home. This is about Americans who have won a lot of money on the lottery and want to buy a new home.

Whenever winners see twin wash basins in a bathroom they cry "amaaaazing". Why is i necessary to have two basins. Do people really wash and clean their teeth at the same time as their partner? It's not a question of their being only one bathroom. I think that all of the houses have at least 2 1/2 bath rooms in them.

Am I being old fashioned?

Why do Americans call the bathroom/WC a 'restroom'? It sounds as though all of them, however tough and rugged, need to have a little lie down several times a day - which I believe is not the case.

Or guest loo- the powder room?

I would quite like two sinks and a bidet!

My DH is particularly messy everywhere, but particularly in the bathroom.

We have a tiny en-suite in our home, but in our holiday lodge we have two large double bedrooms, one at each end, both with en-suites, both with two basins each!

He has to use his own, on his own and I always have a lovely pristine sink in which to complete my ablutions!

I like two washbasins ina beautiful bathroom.

I do NOT like a WC in the place I clean my teeth 😱 ...so unless it's a particularly huge bathroom I would find this off-putting.

My bath time is my private time

All french bathrooms have a power point harrigran took me a while to get used to it. Very handy though.

Regarding twin sinks, I have been married for over 30yrs & I would never, ever ( Para- phrasing Taylor Swift) grin wash my bits or whatever (Sorry again Taylor!!!) In front of my husband. I am completely confounded by these American imports, an abomination. confused

I feel exactly the same Ilovedogs
I am glad that I am not alone in this!

I do not see the point of two basins in a bathroom. In 54 years of marriage I never used the bathroom at the same time as DH.
DD has a guest bathroom that has a spa bath separate shower and twin basins, it is a large room but still we did not share it. Another feature of this bathroom which worried me was the power points above the basins 😬

Go the whole hog, Jax and call it a wash hand basin. grin

Calendargirl Fri 20-Sept-24 07:19:36

That’s ok Jaxjacky, we are always happy to help/advise/give our opinion here on GN.

😂

Gosh, slapped wrist for saying sink, I didn’t realise it was such a thing to say basin, having researched, I will use washbasin henceforth 🙂

Friends bought a house which had twin basins in the ensuite.
It's a normal, detached 4 bedroomed house, the previous owners obviously thought it was a desirable feature.

Another thing I hate is the bath being in the bedroom, I think this is more a British/ European trend , I always think it will leave the room feeling damp, why it considered romantic? I always think twin sinks twice as much to keep clean😂

Agree 62Granny I do like to ablute in private. Also dislike twin basins, makes extra cleaning.

I agree with you. Sinks are in the kitchen, basins are in the bathroom.

Agree too.

Cabbie21 Thu 19-Sept-24 15:50:24

I agree about the word sinks. Kitchen or utility only.
I don’t want two wash basins in a bathroom.
Nor do I want a public loo called a bathroom, because it isn’t.
And nobody has a rest in one either, so not a restroom( US).

SueDonim Thu 19-Sept-24 15:49:53

Yy, sinks out the kitchen, basins in the bathroom.

We rented a flat which had two washbasins when living abroad. It did come in handy when I needed to wash my hair. If there was no power, I had to wash my hair over a basin and sometimes the water would also run out. I used to fill the second basin with clean water so I could rinse off my hair if the taps ran dry mid-shampoo. That’s a very niche requirement, though!

In the same bathroom, the bath was one of those spa baths with lights and bubbles. I adventurously decided to try it one day and it seemed ok. However, when I got out of the bath I found that the pipe work hadn’t been connected to anything and the bathroom floor was awash with soapy bubbles! 😂😂

Not for me. All the more for us clean.

Witzend Thu 19-Sept-24 15:25:18

There were already twin basins* in the ensuite when we bought our house ages ago. We kept two when we updated it. We don’t often use both, but it’s handy now and then to have them.

*to me, sinks belong in the kitchen! Or the utility, not that we have one of those. Dh often refers to the washbasins as ‘sinks’ - it’s a minor irritation to me, but not as bad as his explosive sneezes - like a bomb going off!

Jaxjacky Thu 19-Sept-24 15:13:16

We clean teeth etc in the en-suite at the same time before bed, usually naked because that’s how we sleep. A double sink is just more to clean, very common when we lived in Françe.
