A 2nd autumn/winter goal I’ve set myself…

Has anyone else set themselves a task for the cold, dark months?

My first is to tackle one drawer or cupboard every day and get rid of stuff we no longer wear or use. Set myself the same last year but hardly did any. Resolved to do better this year - but that’s for after the clocks change.

2nd, after barely touching the piano for ages (and I was never much good at all) aiming to learn one favourite piece I tried (and gave up on) a few years ago - Schumann’s ‘Of Strange Lands And People’.
I’m going to try to do it by learning very small sections by heart, playing each over and over, until they’re finally dinged into my ‘muscle memory’.
We shall see….

That's a good idea Witzend* Maybe I'll join you with the Schumann.

As for decluttering, I shall aim to have the loft cleared by my 70th birthday, which is in November.

I’ve 2 bedrooms left to declutter - a pile of the outlaws’ photographs to sort through - even late DH didn’t know who half of them were.
Once that’s done, I’ll go through my wardrobes - again!

Yes, and it’s on similar lines to you!

I struggle with very large jobs, so splitting into manageable chunks is so sensible!

BigBertha1 Thu 26-Sept-24 10:57:42

Mine is what it is every year - finish the book!

Sounds interesting, Bertha1. What are you writing about?

Write a list of what I intend to do.

Yes, do tell!

Those old photos are a problem. It feels disrespectful to just bin them, but are the adult children going to want them? So many aren't dated and often no names on the back. I used to feel quite attached to photos of me at an early age...but somehow I don't feel the same.
I have no grandchildren and not likely to now and that has made me feel different. Going through boxes often makes me feel quite sad....so. ot the best thing to do on a grey rainy day. I shall just have to ask my daughters what they want me to do with them. They do have a box each of their childhood photos I wouldn't ditch those of course.

Its just a romcom kind of thing. Writing what I know - people and golf. It is in its 95th edit.

Yes to break the housework in to more manageable chunks, doing one room at a time instead of doing the whole house in one go and knackering myself. It is amazing what can be achieved in small bits of say half an hour a few times a week instead of a number of hours all in one go. That is definitely my goal.

U made me laugh BigBertha1. I too am a procrastinator, my mother said my middle name should have been mañana! (Spanish for tomorrow!) grin

October’s task is to prepare the sitting room for the decorator, which means moving and getting rid of a lot.
I then plan to finish sorting my late husband’s study by about Easter. That will be two years since he died. I may not manage it, but it will keep me busy over the winter.

I went through the cupboard under the stairs and the kitchen cupboards this week. It was satisfying and it all looks very neat (for)now.
It was satisfying and even managed to fill a bag for the charity. Had planned to get rid of more but it’s a start.

Witzend You have told us all on Gransnet what you are going to do so we shall hold you to it. Please give us an update in the Spring.

Witzend -
Four resolutions , which I started on 1st August with a massive declutter .
I also plan to continue to declutter even if it's just a small section of the house .

Yoga - not just once a week at my class , but every day .
I have the habit of going out most days ,coming home and sinking onto the sofa watching TV .

Diet - to continue to eat more healthy food and to eat more vegetarian food . Watching TV means snacking on far too many sweet and savoury treats and not eating enough fruit , vegetables and salad .

Creative work - my resultion is to do a painting /drawing or write something every day .

We have done most of the decluttering now but it is a never ending task really.

The piano idea is brilliant. We had planned to join various groups but due to my mums hospitalisation I don’t feel I can commit to any groups due to the long drive to visit her several times a week.Learning a new piece of music is something I will enjoy doing.Thank you for the idea!

I sorted a huge box of photos earlier in the year.I made two piles initially.People I recognised and people I didn’t.I then went through the pile of people I recognised and separated them into photos I wanted to keep and photos more relevant for other family members. All other family members wanted their photos and the don’t know them pics went in the bin.No one else wanted to sift through them.

We have to declutter because we are moving but my OH is a terrible hoarder and am often finding things I have bagged or boxed for charity have been taken out again. He really does have issues with this and am going to have to get tough about it.

It wasn’t exactly a resolution, but having joined the local David Lloyd I vowed to go (just for the pool) at least twice a week, to get my money’s worth. So far, so good!

BevSec Sat 28-Sept-24 09:02:22

Witzend, we are getting a new David Lloyd gym and pool, spa etc soon and I want to join but have read the Membership prices are very high.

Yes, it’s not exactly cheap, but I thought sod it! Our local council pool has been closed for some time supposedly for rebuilding, but that won’t be ready for years (council is skint) and the other I used to go to is a 15/20 minute drive (or 2 bus rides) away, and you have to pay to park.
Whereas the DL is just a short (free!) bus ride away. And towels are thrown in, which is a plus.

I do tend to be lazy about exercise, so reasoned that paying would make me go, especially when the weather is cold and miserable for walking - the DL pool is lovely and warm!

You should think about moving to the Western Isles, Ilovedogs. There is said to be no word for mañana in Gaelic as they can’t imagine anything that urgent. grin

Ilovedogs22 Sat 28-Sept-24 10:45:15

Oh yes WheniwasyourageI think that would suit me just fine.
If & it's a big if ! I could actually make the effort to get there, but heh, there's always tomorrow.😊

Mine’s to do gym circuits on my own as well as weight lifting classes. I can now lift a 32 kg kettle bell and with various other weight exercises my arms ,shoulders, quads are visibly stronger . I just need to keep it up !!
