Are English People Very Loud?

I'm on holidays at the moment staying at a small apartment block in Spain. There is a communal garden and pool around which our balconies are grouped. It's normally lovely and quiet, just people snoozing on sunbeds, reading on balconies or swimming in the pool. But as soon as snoozing English couple emergency from their apartment they can be heard everywhere. "TREV, HAVE YOU REMEMBERED THE WATER?" "LYNSEY, YOUR PHONE IS HERE". "OK ARE WE AGREED THEN? WE'LL MEET AT THE RESTAURANT AT SEVEN"?

The English used to be known for being reserved and speaking in quiet tones in public. What happened?

Sorry, as soon as SOME English couples EMERGE from their apartments...

I always thought the English folks are very reserved. I have a real proper lovely English neighbour. She is soft spoken, very elegant and even uses a knife and fork to cut her sandwiches before she eats them. Seriously 😫

I used to think this. But being on holidays the last few years has been an eye opener.

Like all groups of people there will always be those who really make their presence felt.
Quite a few of them gravitate to our local Intermarche and can be heard shouting from one end of the shop to the other. Often being critical of French shops, it can be embarrassing.

I think Brits abroad are a very different breed, especially in Spain and the Canaries, where we have had many happy holidays.
Some of it is down to booze and some if it down to Brits believing the same rules don’t apply on holiday.
Can understand why the Spanish are getting a bit sick and tired of us.
Thought it was just Americans but actually any Americans we have met abroad are charming, polite, and friendly but not loud.

I don’t really think generalisations about the English (or any nationality) is helpful, really. There will always be some people who are loud, brash, or uncouth, etc, etc, whatever nationality, equally there will be people who are quiet, polite, reserved, considerate, etc, etc.

There are quiet people and loud people in every country around the world. We're all different.

I don't think this is purely an English thing, any nationality has quiet and loud people, I remember when I was courting my DH, my parents had friends visit, who were like them from Italy originally but had been living in Wales for many years , they were all sitting in the kitchen chatting and my DH asked me why the other lady was shouting , I said that was just the way she spoke , it was very loud.

I have found that if I'm on a train the loud voices seem very often to be speaking with either an English (usually southern) accent or an American accent. Scots and Canadians seem to be quieter. (Hides behind sofa.)

😁

I've been to Burns suppers with ex-pat Scots!
There are none louder!!

I agree with Ziplok

Well I think it's the Americans and Canadians.
I'm married to a Scot, my SiL is very loud and opinionated.

It's not nationalities, just individual people.

AGAA4 Thu 26-Sept-24 17:07:48

It is just individuals and doesn't matter where they are from. Some people have loud voices and others are quieter. In the little community I live in there are two people you can always hear if they are outside the others are much quieter.

It's mainly the yobs and hooray Henries.

I'm on holiday abroad in a resort where there is currently a British Film Festival, so there are many English speaking people around. I can't say I've heard anyone being overly loud in restaurants or in the town.

Typecasting!

Our next door neighbour (in Leicestershire!) is an actor. You can hear him coming for miles.

Brian Blessed?😁

The English aren’t exactly known for their loudness, so I think it’s any nationality but more about individuals. We all know those whose voices are a bit louder than others.

cornergran Thu 26-Sept-24 23:04:28

I don’t think it’s nationality, it’s just individuals. An old friend is loud, very loud. When we lived in the same road our children used to ask why I was talking with her on the phone - just put your head outside you’ll head every word. Her daughter has grown to be the same, her husband was very quietly spoken.

I am loud quite often 😬 - but am definitely quieter when not at home and normally very conscious of volume when in public spaces (or abroad in a different culture).

I admit my husband and I can both laugh a lot when out with one couple who we love (and also laugh a lot). I know this is annoying to some people as we have once been told we were laughing "too much" at a pub. 😖

One of my daughters is loud when excited. Not in ordinary conversation but she's quite animated.

None of us shout to each other over a distance as described above. I also dislike that kind of loudness!

You enjoy each others company as a family that is nice to hear. I love to hear people enjoying themselves in a world at present so full of worry and misery.

NotSpaghetti Fri 27-Sept-24 01:06:34

Thanks Redhead.

Mixed I think. Same as most. We tend to hear the loud ones, for obvious reasons ! Most people become loud after a couple of drinks which is noticeable when you are not drinking yourself 😀
