What an actress! From The Prime if Miss Jean Brodie onwards.

Brilliant actress. For me it was Lady in The Van.

We have lost one of our best ever actresses. Lady in the Van, Downton Abbey and many more, her great talent will be sorely missed. R.I.P. Dame Maggie Smith

R.I.P. Dame Maggie Smith. You were an incredible actress, both in comedy and drama, for so many decades. Thank you so much for entertaining us over the years. Sincere condolences to your family and friends. 💐

The BBC got something right tonight, she led the Radio 4 6pm headlines ahead of Netanyahu.

Like all true stars she was also dignified and private. Her talent spoke for itself. She didn't seek attention through tell all articles and parading her personal life across the covers of OK and Hello magazine.

Such a talented actor. She dominated every scene - in a good way. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen her in but -the dowager duchess in `downtown and prof mc in Harry Potter her recent parts were so good. And of course, the lady in the van

Apparently she wasn't particularly interested in her roles in Downton and HP, saying they weren't really acting.

She was amazing in Alan Bennett's Down Among the Lentils. I also loved her in Quarter.

I enjoyed her in so many films and TV shows over the years, I can’t pick a favourite. A truly wonderful actress.
RIP Dame Maggie Smith and thank you for such marvellous memories.

Like everyone else on here, I thought that the sun shone out of her. I loved her in Downton most of all, but she was so good in other roles too.
She gave us so much pleasure over the years and I hope she enjoyed those acting roles as much as we did.
I don’t think she will be forgotten for a very long time. RIP dear Maggie.

She was an incredible actress, even in a café in Cornwall where I happened to be. As she prepared to leave the venue she stood up, threw her pashmina over her shoulder with a great flourish and marched out as if she was leaving the stage. She filled the room. Unforgettable.

Wonderful actress over many decades.
I am guessing they will be showing films as a tribute.

Wonderful actress - an end of an era.

The death of Glenda Jackson was the end of an era.

“I was right about my maid. She’s leaving — to get married! How could she be so selfish?”

HA HA HA! My most favourite quote of her Downton Abbey character!

Maggie was gorgeous, intelligent, hard working and had a contagious sense of humour!
